  The undoubted star of the auction was a stunning supercharged 1930 Alfa Romeo 1750 6C Gran Sport, estimated at £280,000 to £320,000 that apparently saw a top bid of £310,000. A lovely 1941 BMW 327/28 Cabriolet sold for £110,000. A recreation of the 1989 Michael Keaton ‘Batmobile’ sold for £65,000, helped on its way by the presence of a recreation of Batman himself.

  Weirdest and most wonderful of all is a collection of early 20th-century cars that are powered by aeroplane engines. The BMW 'Brutus' is one such car, with an interesting back-story. Germany was forbidden from creating military aircraft after World War I, so, with large numbers of 12-cylinder 46-litre engines spare, this experimental project was created.

  I walked into the halls to see a 22k mile 04 reg facelift Mondeo 1.8LX sell for just £5,475. I’ve never seen an 18 month old Sierra or Mondeo quite at low as that. A 140k mile 2000W BMW 318iSE sold for £3,450. Well up on the miles, but well down on the money. The 65k mile 2000X PT Cruiser top-spec Limited automatic in the photo sold for £4,200.   A 32k mile 2003/53 reg Volvo XC90 SE D5 Geartronic bid strongly to sell for £26,450 (not all that far off a new one in Week’s best Deals). An old shape 44k mile 2003/53 Corolla Verso T2 D-4D sold for £7,550. A 66k mile 2001/51 BMW 530i Sport auto was way over at £13,500. And a 36k mile 02 reg MINI One with alloys and a/c made more than Cooper money at £8,100, perhaps an effect of being three insurance groups lower.

  To hype-a-market, the first requirement is people with too much money and the confidence to spend it on expensive cars in short supply. Two weeks ago three bidders fought each other to buy a 52 reg imported very high spec BMW X5 3.0D Sport auto with the winner paying £46,750. But today they just weren’t there, so its identical spec sister car started at £40,000, bid to ‘£43,000’ provisionally and didn’t sell.
