  I am contemplating upgrading my halogens to HIDs but am finding it difficult to find someone who can do the job in the London area. Does anyone know a specialist who could carry out the job on a BMW 5 (E39)? BMW don't offer an upgrade so rather typically say that it can't be done!

  But I’ve noticed over the past year the cars using a lot of oil between service intervals about 1 litre every 1500-2000 miles and I’ve seen online that high oil usage is a symptom of the timing chain about to go I really like the car but I don’t know if I should try to sell it before it does go or bring it to BMW to have a look at as I’ve bought the extended insured warranty from them and the car was also bought from a BMW dealer. I told my local dealer about the high oil usage and he said it’s normal but I’m not so sure as the car sounds like a diesel from a cold start.

  Hi all Could anyone help out please? I took my Bmw to my local BMW garrage with a clutch problem. I also asked them to do a check up on my car. They found a fault with the glow plugs. The quotation from them to change the plugs was £300+. So I gave the green light to replace them.

  In the end the whole thing soured me on that dealer, it made me feel like they were just trying to get rid of a potential money pit and got annoyed when I didn't put up the cash immediately - as if the bmw badge was enough to blind me to any faults.

  The obvious solution would be to go to the nearest dealer and sell my car there, but of course I'd probably get less money then as oppose to selling online. Lets say that I sell my car privately on autotrader and I want a BMW model 116d which unfortunately no one is selling near my location (Northern IReland), it's all in the UK mainland. In that instance can I visit my local dealer and give him the required info about the car I want and he will bring the car over at no extra significant cost?

  I get a feeling that HJ is right about old electrics but this seems a case of pay up as it is quite a decent car, nowhere near scrap. Does anyone have a view about BMW electrics both in this case and generally? I know cars don't last forever but my bicycle is a more reliable and cost effective transport for local running about.   Bought a BMW 535i (Sport) from the first owner with 73k miles and FSH. It looked as if it was sagging a bit on the driver?s side and the tyres were worn unevenly. The answer was seemingly obvious and professional opinion concurred, so it was new shocks and springs all round (BMW MTech OEM factory spec), and while we were at it, I replaced the tyres and refurbed the wheels.

  He wanted the car for half a day at least. I spoke to another specialist who wanted £250, but said explicitly that the condenser would a BMW compatible condenser, but not a BMW branded condenser. He wanted the car for at least a day. Spoke to another specialist, who is yet to get back to me. Do these prices look ok? Would it be feasible for me to get the part down myself, fix it and then get it re-gassed, effectively paying only for regassing (which seems to cost about £45)?

  Her local dealer are saying that there is a slight dent on the rim where it looks like she may have hit a pothole and the resultant puncture (run flat tyres) has weakened the alloy and then its "weakest point" has broken as a result. She has phoned BMW direct and they are sticking to the same story. On closer inspection of the tyre at Kwik Fit, the tyre is not punctured anywhere.! She has asked them if they are happy then with her to go to the press and say that BMW are saying that if you have a slight dent on your rim, then your wheel may split in two!
