    Philip Young and Paul Brace, driving a very lightly modified Fiat Panda TwinAir have beaten the world record for driving from Cape Town to London. After arriving in Europe on Saturday, the crew drove flat-out through Europe to make their final destination in London.

    An online service that replaced the paper part of the driving licence crashed just hours after the counterpart was abolished. The paper part of the driving licence has been abolished from today, Monday, 8 June. But drivers were left unable to access their details after the relevant section of the DVLA’s website collapsed under weight of additional traffic.

    The number of people killed in drink-drive accidents rose last year by 25 per cent. The figures from the Department for Transport show that 290 people were killed in alcohol related road accidents in 2012, compared to 230 in the previous year.

    Road safety minister Mike Penning made an honest and passionate speech about ways to improve the driving of young people new to the roads.  The UK Driving Test, he said, was no longer "fit for purpose", and Pass Plus was only reducing crashes by young drivers by 1%. What is needed is better training towards a more realistic test, and post-test continued education of young drivers in order to instill in them the basic skills, observation and defensive driving techniques to survive unscathed on our increasingly congested roads.

    Insects have been identified as the second-biggest distraction to motorists, causing 650,000 driving accidents each year, according to a new survey by insurance firm esure. Beaten to the top spot by strong sunlight, 75 per cent of drivers claimed to be distracted by bugs while driving, with four per cent admitting to reacting by slamming on the brakes and 22 per cent claiming they take their hands off the wheel.

  • Curios: Citroen 2CV Sahara 15 Jan 2015 (News)
    Even a standard Citroen Deux Chevaux is capable of crossing reasonably rough terrain thanks to its front-drive layout, large wheels and generous ground clearance. But Citroen reckoned a four-wheel drive version was a good idea, the end result being the 2CV Sahara of 1961 – which, instead of using a conventional all-wheel drive set-up, was fitted with an extra engine in the boot to ensure all-round traction.
