  My car engine rattles when you first start it up, only for a few seconds and then it runs fine. Can you advise as to why this may be?

  I would like to change the oil in the gearbox, transfer box and 2 diffs on the above car .It is 8 years old and has covered 75K. I cannot find any information on the grades and capacities for this car does nobody change these oils in this day and age, Years ago Casrol used to supply a chart giving all this gen for most vehicles.

  can anyone help, when i start my 1995 1.8 td it smokes like a kipper at idle, its ok when its warm and it does not smoke when its being driven (or revved up a bit). i have done some basics of changing the air/oil/fuel filters, changing the oil its self, had the idle speeds checked but it does still smoke. it starts pretty well and you dont need to throttle it to get it going any suggestions? cheers dave

  Stuck for something to do on a sunny Saturday afternoon, I had a look under the engine of my Ford Focus for oil leaks. I found one or two minor ones which seem like fairly fresh oil, but there's nothing on the floor and the level doesn't appear to have dropped noticeably since the oil was last changed, in February.

  Hi, oil light came on this evening, static orange light. Oil checked yesterday as I was doing a 60 mile trip and was in the middle of the 4 notches on the dipstick. Had car 2 years oil changes 6 monthly around 6 thousand mile.

  The bike has been serviced from new with oil changes every 1000-2000 miles. It only has 17000 miles on the clock. I did once overfill the oil a little and rode for 100 miles after which I drained it. Could this be the cause? My question is: is it normal, how can I stop this and should I worry about it?

  Are there any products on the market( that REALLY WORK ? ) that I can add to my engine oil that will stop an oil leak? The problem appears to be at the cylinder head and in the past I have changed the head gasket and had the head skimmed which cured the problem for a couple of years but it appears to have returned.( The head bolts are fully torqued down OK ) I suspect that the block wants skimming which will be expensive and time consuming, hence the request for a quick "additive to the oil " answer.

  It hasn’t been regularly driven in a few months but every month I’ll take it around the neighborhood a little. It hasn’t had an oil change obviously and the oil is pretty old in it. Drove around 5,000 miles with it. I noticed that it has a small puddle of oil under it some times and the oil is very low in it. Does anyone know what could possibly be causing it and how much it will cost to fix.

  Hi, i had to get towed back the other night by the AA when my golf chose to spit its engine oil out every where. Got it home and found an oil switch on the oil filter housing was pumping out oil at a fair rate, changed the switch but have noticed i've also got a much slower but continuous (leaks when engine off)  leak at the back of the engine (haven't located source yet).

  I've bought a peugeot 205 1.9 gti as a non runner.Before i bought it i knew that the cam belt had snapped a new head fitted.The problem that i have is that there is no oil getting to the head.I've changed the spring and piston in the oil pump but to tell the truth i haven't checked if there is any drive to the pump..if there is drive to the pump what else could be the most likely problem.I've removed the oil pressure sensor from the block and there doesn't seem to be any oil getting up there.Could damage have been done to the bottom end of the block when the cam belt snapped?.

  Warning light about the injectors kept coming on, engine down on power and then the dipstick came out and oil escaped. Took it to one garage and he said a complete engine rebuild. Got a second opinion and he said he could find nothing serious, he steam cleaned the engine, flushed the engine, drained all the old oil and changed the oil pump.

  My in-laws bought a Golf deisel six months ago from a main dealer who did the 36k service including the oil change. This is the first deisel they have owned, i have never owned a deisel. In-laws are concerned that the oil is now black after only 6 months and about 3k miles. I looked at the dip stick and it is the blackest sootiest oil i have seen in 30 years!

  I am contemplating on changing the engine oil on my car. It has done 17000 miles. The handbook recommends sythetic oil 5W-40,Total Quartz 9000. I rang local dealer who do not stock the Total brand, but offered me Motaquip 5W-40 oil, is this the same and will it be ok to use?

  I am still awaiting the first service due indicator but as the car is mainly used on motorways, this may be some distance away yet. Are there any implications of the lack of oil consumption and would anyone recommend an oil change now, irrespective of the service indicator?

  Just to be sure I did an oil and filter change yesterday afternoon. Old oil not overly discoloured and no signs of swarf on the sump plug. Warning still flashes for 30 secs on start. Anyone got any ideas? The warning tends to suggest pressure problems but I\'m puzzled that it clears after a short while.

  Hi, I have a '99 Vectra 2.0 Di and I'm about to change the oil... or not, as it seems. I don't have a socket large enough to take the top off the oil filter housing, my largest socket is 1.5" (imperial I know, but it is the largest I have) - even my large adjustable spanner won't widen enough - not that I could get it in a position to use anyway.

  I have cleaned out the rubber pipe but still blocked. I wonder about pouring degreasant down the breather, leaving for 24 hrs, (and then change the oil). Or trying to blast the crud back the way it came using compressed air. Any better suggestions? pmh (was peter)

  d) I've searched the web for details but can't find any info. e) The only thing I have been able to find out is that the oil type 'may' have changed from the year 2000 and is 'probably' not the same as earlier models. Any help would be appreciated.
