A package steam boiler can achieve around 75% efficiency with good maintenance and the rest goes up through the chimney or in radiation losses. I?m sure someone will know what percentage efficiency a car engine can achieve. and is perhaps even less than this but with modern advances in such things as condensing boilers utilising heat previously wasted up the flue, there just may be some better use than pushing it out of the exhaust pipe.

The front street is just as bad, (although a bit wider) but when two cars park opposite one another, the road is totally blocked, the residents know this, and accept it, we think nothing of having to go out and move our cars to let other folk in or out, tis life around here as we live it!

  • Peugeot 106 1.5D 95' - Heated Window lead broken from window - Any Idea? 5 Jul 2021 (Forum)
Evening all, had good advice here is past and wandered if anyone knows how to fix this one? The lead got snagged at one point and the copper cable that had a solder join to the heated rear window matrix came away. I've never yet found a way to reconnect it. Anyway know any way to do that? I tried a solder paint some years back but it lasted maybe 2 days. Don't expect many answers tonight with the footy on.
  • Jaguar S-Type (1999 - 2007) - yr2000 - heating problem 18 Nov 2010 (Forum)
I'm having a problem with my 2000 W-Reg Jaguar S-Type - Basically, the heating system doesn't work. The A/C works, and all the rest, but when you put the setting to warm, cold air comes out. No matter what setting you use, it's still cold air that comes out, and I've tried various combinations to make sure that there is no other way to make it work.

I'm also keen to hear what the 'DSC' button on the fascia in front of the shifter does (on the same cluster as the heated seat and parking sensor controls - I think it's DSC, will check tonight to make sure), and whether this has any impact on shift patterns or is more to do with traction control through the braking system.
  • Hyundai i30 2013 - Demisting 20 Oct 2013 (Forum)
As much as I like the car, I have found that the windscreen seems very prone to misting up. The demisters seem a bit feeble compared to other cars even the previous model. I have to use the a/c quite a lot to clear the screen which I have not had to do before.
  • FIAT Panda - Brake Pad Shims Query 9 Sep 2017 (Forum)
I've read that they are needed, others have said they have run without shims with no problem, I've heard they are good for heat transfer, but also heard their purpose is to silence the brakes. I'd be grateful if some of you out there could give me your thoughts on what the shims are actually for, and whether it is safe for me to run the car without them.

  • Nissan Micra (2003 - 2010) - 03 1.2 Windscreen wipers have a mind of their own 10 May 2009 (Forum)
The fault is intermittent but annoying enough to need fixing. The car is a fairly recent purchase and has only covered 6,500m from new and is otherwise fine. Electrical problems are not my strong suit so I would much appreciate any advice, guidance or a pointer in the right direction.
