Farewell chug a chug Diesels - you served us well. 13 Aug 2009 (Forum)
The future,as we know, for general purpose (city) cars are small (and smaller) more and more powerful per litre petrol engines. Fuel consumption is up - for multi stop start running. Pity about that. How many have sold on that relatively new largish capacity diesel without a DPF in that almost reflex way we have in the UK with cars only a few years old? Without realizing that they would be disadvantaged by its DPF replacement. -

In Case of Emergency 27 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The Professional Drivers Foundation helped the family but it was there wish that we develop some sort of means of identification to run alongside ICE ( In Case of Emergency) to try and prevent this happening to anyone else. We have developed the PDF Next of Kin Card which is a laminated, credit card size document to be carried in your wallet or purse. -

Vauxhall Zafira B (2005 - ) - 2005 1.6 Warranty Repairs 6 Mar 2009 (Forum)
The car is in the garage again and the dealer is talking with Vauxhall re: repairs, which I have stated that I am not paying for them, as this is a fault reported and attempted prior to warranty running out (ran out at end Dec 08). Meantime, both the dealer and Vauxhall have both refused to give me a courtesy car. I have a job which where I need my car, as I am out and about all day. Given that it has taken between 2-4 weeks for repairs and also given that the dealer does not a clue what the problem is, I do want to hire a car. -
Another 'First Car' set of daft questions 25 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Something with 4 or 5 doors with a reasonable size engine as I may have to do a bit of Motorway commuting for work Not very sure how many miles per year I will be doing as my work is a little random in where they can send me, might be three miles down the road, or Inverness. My Partner is 25, a teacher and she has about 4-5 years no claims and runs a 97 Clio. My questions are thus: 1) What sort of car should I be looking for on my budget? - My initial thoughts, based on ignorance and google, are towards a Mondeo of some sort or an Avansis 2) How do I stop getting murdered by the Insurance? -
Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 1997 1.3 idle and drive issues 16 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Or I have to put the car into neutral and use full throttle until full revs come back. It?s almost as if the engine was seizing or fuel mixture running way too rich; the latter of which explains why increasing the throttle worsens the problem! 5) On disconnecting the throttle position sensor, the idle drops 100 rpm to about 860 rpm, but symptom 2) becomes a lot more noticeable and if you come off the accelerator fast enough, the engine cuts out. -
Land Rover Experience day 12 Feb 2009 (Forum)
The snow, water and slush and mud, and perfect blue skies made it so much better. We were given a briefing and run down on how lazy diffs are, how to use diff locks to counteract this, hill descent, stability control, traction control etc. Then we got outside to be given a brand new Disco3 TDV6 HSE. This came in hideous orange but was fully kitted out, as it was one of the team cars produced for the now cancelled 2009 landrover g4 challenge. -
Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 03 1.4 clunks, hisses and big miles 8 Jan 2009 (Forum)
The first Micra I sold, the second I couldn't bear to be parted so she's SORNED in my garage and is still roadworthy. I figure the Pug owes us nothing, so it too is going to be run until it dies, and I'm hoping for a good innings out of it yet. The miles are mostly motorways and it's been serviced on the dot. However there are a couple of things that annoy me, so I thought best to come to the experts. -
Volvo S40/V40 (1996 - 2004) - 97 2.0 Electrical Charging problem, Please help!! 30 Dec 2008 (Forum)
While driving the lights went dim (inside and out) abs and airbag light came on for about 2 miles and the battery was run down at our destination. This time we changed the alternator, assuming that it must be working intermittantly, and this time the car drove over 500 miles trouble free before the same tihng happened again. -
Renault Scenic (2003 - 2009) - 04 'Check Parking Brake' warning after pad change 9 Dec 2008 (Forum)
The first thing that went wrong is that I could not release the handbrake using the method described in the manual (card in slot, pull handle and press centre button) so I had to work on the car with the engine running. The nearside pads were changed pronto, and I was working on the offside when I had to go into the house. Without thinking I turned off the engine and the handbrake engaged! The handbrake cable was now pulled all the way in (it wasn't attached to the caliper at the time) and so when I came back to the car I couldn't pull the cable out. -
Revitalised 1964 Mini Cooper/new owner destroyed ! 27 Nov 2008 (Forum)
OK it took around 12 months & the rolling shell was at the paint shop for 4/5 months but is was worth it for the end result. For the time afterwards it was a joy & pleasure to own & run but then the time had come where I wanted something more refined as well as larger. This is where I made a BIG mistake.......LOL ! I put a for sale sign in the window & within days the car was sold to a guy who although had the funds to buy it, I later realised he new nothing of what he had bought, as in only a month later I saw the car back with big alloys, big aftermarket mirrors, a loud exhaust the bumpers replaced for later ones. -
Peugeot 406 (1996 - 1998) - 1996 2.0 Went thru puddle, exhaust mounts caught f 26 Nov 2008 (Forum)
When any revs put on it would cough and splutter, but did notice it was getting better, the longer it was left running - I assumed it was drying out. HOWEVER - although the car was driving noticed that the rubber exhaust mounts had caught fire !!! Oddly enough after putting fire out and leaving it for a while the car stopped misfiring and in fact drove better than it had in a long time. -
bump 14 Oct 2008 (Forum)
The grain of the "grazing" on my car clearly shows the direction of someone squeezing past me on the road and not me running into someone. I am not sure what to do - I reckon at the worst, its an accident with no witnesses and minor damage to both vehicles, I was on the road NOT turning into it when the bump occured, it should at worst be joint liability as she admits she did not see me there. -
Toyota Yaris (1999 - 2005) - 2000 1.3 SR Increase in fuel consumption 14 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Over the last few months I have noticed the computer fuel consumption figures have dropped - in all the years it has constantly read around 44-48 mpg and I had no trouble getting it up to 50 mpg - however it's now reading 39-41 - it runs well and starts first time - Now when starting up from cold I can smell slight whiff of petrol and after first 200yrds to first tee junction when lifting foot off throttle the engine speed doesn't drop instantly like it used to -- I have given it a few Italian tune ups (she drives steady) cleaned plugs and changed air filter - There is no temp gauge only a blue symbol of thermometer and that goes out after about 1 1/2 miles - heater gets hot quickly - so before I ask my local Mobile Auto Tune specialist to come and plug his kit on has anyone any advise as what I could look for - I feel it has to be something simple and connected to cold startup as when engine is hot and I reset computer to zero the fuel consumption figure is back up to 44-48 but after startup next morning it drops back to low 40's and if she does a few cold starts during day it gets even lower -- Doing a tank full to tank full consumption work out it's coming out at 44-45. -
Land Rover Range Rover Sport (2005 - ) - Had a long drive in one last night 8 Oct 2008 (Forum)
The damp white lines on the road also tugged the wheel occasionally. I wonder if the standard wheels make it a better drive? The engine is quiet on a run, but rumbly at idle and with not enough shove from a standstill. Overall performance was fine but not great although the economy seemed to be pretty good. The Zenon headlights were pretty good as well. -
Badge engineering 29 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Hi fellow motorists, Im not a true petrol head, but ive sold machinery to the trade for over thirty years and im an avid fan of the way cars are made, run, and sold. Im particularly amazed to the extent "badge engineering" is so rampant thesedays. You really dont know what your actually buying, and its clever marketing. I dont see anything basically wrong with the principal, it must keep costs down, and it costs mega bucks to develop new engines/platforms. -
No oil, engine ruined, Not MY fault (of course) 23 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Seen recently. Lad had gone 8,000 miles from new and oil had `run out`. Never checked and of course, "NOT MY FAULT". I think the maker was being blamed...... the Manufacturer, maybe.. but the typical 2008 British "Its not my fault". (actually, not even put like that.. as though "own Fault" even as a concept could not exist, with the words "not my fault" not actually written and blame being passed on directly as though its a *RIGHT* that someone else is responsible.) -
DMF's and the van connection 14 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I thrashed the living daylights out of them, and the current transit and other similar vans are driven with equal cruelty by their current young drivers. Have you ever tried to beat a diesel MB sprinter off the lights, they could give a motorcycle a run for its money, so how come these vehicles which are usually driven absolutely flat out survive. Whats the difference then, and if they don't have the dreaded DMF, how come they don't shake the engine to bits, as apparently a car diesel engine would? -
Citroen Berlingo Multispace (1998 - 2010) - 2001 1.9 diesel - injector problems! Please help! 12 Jul 2008 (Forum)
I'm waiting for a call back to see when the garage will be able to look at the car again. Normally, the engine runs very well but the power from the engine feels very "bouncy" at around 2000 rpm (But only when moving)...I'd always put this down to a soft engine mounting and am unconcerned but could this be related?
