Reliable DPFs and EGRs 23 Jan 2019 (Forum)
If so, how much does a remove+clean+replace cost? I do about 24k miles a year, about 1/3 of which are long runs (360 mile round trip), and the rest local journeys, though most of these are more like 3 to 10 miles rather than say 1 mile or less. -
BMW X 5/ NISSAN QASHKAI - Used BMW X5 or Nissan Qashkai? What to choose? 13 Dec 2018 (Forum)

Vauxhall Mokka replacement 27 Nov 2018 (Forum)
My daughter currently runs a Vauxhall Mokka 1.6 petrol which while she likes the driving position, however its rubish on fuel also her family is getting larger....she would like to change it for something bigger to accomadate three under 6year old children and automatic and better fuel compsumsion for her work commute...diesel would give the best mpg but I am worried of potential problems if she goes down the diesel route...she does do over twelve thousand miles a year....does an economical seven seater petrol engined alternative exist...your advice would be much appreciated as I am just getting more confused the more I look at possibles. -
Honest John’s Motoring Agony Column 22-09-2018 Part 2 23 Sep 2018 (Forum)
This is the car's (sensible) way of prompting you that the light levels have dropped to the point that it's dark enough to need your main lights on. If the dash was always illuminated and with daylight running lights it would be very easy to forget to turn your lights on. By dimming the dashboard it reminds you to turn on your main lights. The lights referred to as sidelights are strictly speaking parking lights and shouldn't be used for driving around, hence why they have no effect on the dimmed instruments. -

Any - Cheap, fun car under £1,000 13 Jun 2018 (Forum)
I fancy a cheap car for going to the shops, local runs etc. Now, it must be fun to drive but doesn't have to be a sporty car but just handle well. I'm not bothered abour reliabilty record as I know at this price anything could go wrong. One other thing, economy could do with being about 40 plus to the gallon. -
Any - Disabling parking sensors when towing 23 Apr 2018 (Forum)
I have various options: just pull the power on the parking sensors; fit a switch to the wiring in the boot; run wiring to a switch on the dashboard; fit some sort of relay between the parking sensors and towing electrics. The final solution is preferable but I'm not sure where to get one or how to wire it so that the sensors are disabled when a trailer with a simple trailer board is hooked up. -
Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.6 8V Spanner light coming up 25 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Astra 1.6 8v 2001 petrol. The car runs perfect until sometimes usually in traffic or pulling up to a junction the engine fault light with the spanner symbol comes on, and the engine goes into limp home mode. Turn the engine off and restart back to normal operation and engine light goes out. -
Peugeot 207 - High Speed Only - Indicator not working!!! 20 Oct 2017 (Forum)
Going down the motorway my rear indicator started flashing double time, I have checked and definitely the back one is not working. But when I slow down it starts working again. I have done a few test runs and have narrowed it down to something I just don't understand. If the car is doing over 50mph the rear indicator does not work. But slowing down to less than 50mph it kicks back in and works normally. -
Hyundai i40 - Hyundai Stop Start System 9 Sep 2017 (Forum)
Anyway when the car was returned to me later that day, I was advised that it probably needed a good run ! It still isn't working now. It lives on the motorway and covers about 3000 miles a month. Anyone know anything about the technology behind these systems or encountered the same problem Thanks. -
Renault Kangoo Trekka 1.9D 4x4 - replace steering rack 23 Jun 2017 (Forum)
Hi, Pre MOT inspection reveals requirement to replace power steering rack, I will be tackling this myself with limited facilities and tooling, rent as required. can anyone tell me if the engine needs to be dropped on the rear subframe mounts to extract and insert rack? I can't find a Haynes manual, suspect another Renault model would be the same running gear, Megane?any other advice welcome. It's an old van and not really viable but has too much sentimental value for the kids not to give it a go, bought a rack, reconditioned bankrupt stock for 80 quid! -
n/a - Tanker drivers striking in France - again. 2 Jun 2017 (Forum)
You might be ok for a fill up, you might not, it depends where you go and what the local situation is - it's a bit hit and miss at the moment. I'm running both of our vehicles with full tanks at the moment because I don't want to get caught out like I did last year. https://www.thelocal.fr/20170526/fuel-driver-strike-could-affect-weekend-trips and http://www.ouest-france.fr/economie/transports/penurie-de-carburant/carburants-les-conducteurs-reconduisent-leur-greve-mercredi-5028107 -
2004 ford fiesta 1.25 - Fiesta Stalling 26 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Car holds good vacuum. When the vacuum line is removed from fuel pressure regulator on the injector rail, the car runs spot on. I have tried replacing this also to no avail. Any other suggestions wouyld be greatly appreciated. Thanks! -
Brand new Nissan Note Xe - Idler bolt sheared off 4 Mar 2017 (Forum)
Pulled over and then went to off ramp where car juddered before she stopped. Nissan informs us that fan belt had come off pulley it runs on because one of the bolts that holds an idler pulley in place sheared off, resulting in fan belt coming off pulley. Sounds pretty bad for a brand new car and also makes you wonder if it's a systematic production issue. -
Ford Mondeo Estate - Steel wheels one axle alloy other axle 27 Feb 2017 (Forum)
I have rimmed 2 sets now on potholes here in Surrey. I still have the string wheels. I need new front tyres anyway. Can I run steel on same axle (front or back?). Apart from looking a bit odd it should be ok right? Would you put steel's on front or back? -
Vauxhall Insignia Sports Tourer - Thermostat Faulty? 23 Feb 2017 (Forum)
I have the 1.8 petrol Insignia and have had the "Service Vehicle Soon" warning and the cooling fans constantly running. A quick Google suggested the thermostat may be the culprit. My local garage suggested a fan control ECU needed replacing but I was not sure if their diagnostic kit could tell the differnce between the thermostat or ECU fault. -
Audi A6 2008 - Garage repairs 6 Feb 2017 (Forum)
Good afternoon I'm after some advise on garage repairs, my car wouldn't start November 16, took it to Vw/ Audi specialist, he advised car had dpf filter blocked up also rocker cover needed to be removed and cleaned due to running car on incorrect oil, I had a bill for replacement dpf from motor factors and fitting for £1045, car has been back in garage since end of January 17 due to breakdown, garage said oil filter was clogged solid and caused the engine to blow, I'm not a mechanic, but Surley this should have been replaced when the original repair was done? -
Suzuki Bergman 400 2008 - Engine bogging down 23 Jan 2017 (Forum)
Bike is a fuel injection model so some comparable tech to cars. Basically even in this cold snap, it starts and runs fine but the last third of the the throttle travel causes the engine to bog down, losing speed even on downhill sections. I wondered if the tank was vacuuming but opening the cap briefly didn't make any difference. -
Honda Civic - Boot Locked 19 Dec 2016 (Forum)
Found a quick fix: start engine and open/close drivers door lock a couple of times. (do hear locking clicks when i start engine though). Can now open boot with engine running, but not if engine and keys are not in ignition. Heard it could be Acutator !!! also heard that if you open boot... disconnect battery then re-connect this resets and can open boot!!! Any advice on a cheap way to fix would be good thanks. -
2014 Hyundai Santa Fe - Sooty back end 6 Nov 2016 (Forum)
I get no dash light and no poor running or loss of power or economy. It has been to the dealer 3 times and the last visit they said that it was fine, that there is no faults recorded and it will pass a mot test and is therefore within acceptable limits and no fault is recognised by Hyundai.
