How should I drive my Citroen C5 diesel in order to avoid potential DPF problems? 5 Sep 2010 (Ask HJ)
A couple of months ago, I bought a secondhand 2007 Citroen C5 2.0 HDi auto. This is obviously a rep's car, given the 72,000 miles on the clock. Again,... -
Can i be forced to go through insurance after bump 13 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I bumped a girls car in an the work car park, with my engine not even on might i add, was trying to push back so i could get at the engine. In any case i bumped some girl n/s wing on her 02 polo. I have from the start stated that i would pay for the damage i had caused rather than go through insurance. So after advice on here, and her stating it would cost £600 to repair from her friend or fathers garage i asked her to provide me with 3 independent written quotes as the damage clearly doesnt cost £600. -
Why is my 2003 Vauxhall Zafira losing power when the engine management light comes on? 10 Aug 2010 (Ask HJ)
We have a 2003 Vauxhall Zafira Design diesel which we bought secondhand about three years ago. For some time, we have had problems with the management... -

Problem getting a resonable price newish van MPV 6 Jan 2010 (Forum)
.******* They are unwilling to go much below 1,000 discount on the diesel models even on the pre-reg 09's. I have been left very dissolutioned by my experience. Some may think my principles are wrong to refuse to pay more than £10 grand for a vehicle which is no more than a van with seats, but im astonished at some of the manufacturer mark ups and the unwillingness of dealers who are more interested in a finance deal than straight cash. -
Volvo S60 (2000 - 2009) - 01 2.0 Indicator stalk replacement - Haynes manual 19 Dec 2009 (Forum)
This is just for advice/info for others, and I suspect also applies to the V70 and S80 of similar vintage. My S60's indicator stalk was becoming intermittent, so with a guaranteed secondhand part delivered this week, set about the task this morning, with my trusty Haynes manual in tow. According to the Haynes manual, you have to remove the steering wheel and airbag, itself a convoluted procedure which can easily damage the contact unit if not done correctly. -
Renault - Trafic 115 dci SWB 2008 15 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Thought id share some thoughts on this van which ive had on hire since Friday but have already stuck 600 miles on it. Cab is pretty standard, infact much of the controls remind me of a mid-90's Clio - they feel quite fragile but essentially work ( aside from a couple of electrical bits ). There is even an outside temp gauage but being a Renault, it permanatly reads between -1 and -3, so its useless of course. -
Winter storage of my convertible - Advice please! 30 Sep 2009 (Forum)
As a few of you might know, I bought a 1990 Jag XJ-S convertible earlier this year. This is stored in a garage for the classic car insurance stipulation, and this is a long single garage. The nights will soon be drawing in and the frosts will not be far behind so I am after some advice. -
Limited info to choose a new car for Mrs H 29 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I had thought that Mrs H was coping with mid-life stuff very well until a run of rough night shifts in the midwifery unit immediately after our holiday, and a simultaneous visit from her unemployed brother and his idle wife made her unusually irritable at the weekend. I paraphrase our conversation as follows; Mrs H, " I want a new car, my C3's nearly 10 years old now." H, seated, browsing this very site, "It's actually just 7 years old. Anything in mind, my dear?" Mrs H, "Something that turns heads." Pause. "In red; bright red." H, looking at the rolling Citroen advert and pointing at the pics of the C3 Picasso, "That would turn a few heads. -
Next car in 18 months time -a blog. 22 Jul 2009 (Forum)
We run two cars. SWMBO has a 2005 Grand Scenic and I run a 2002 52 Mondeo. The Scenic is used mainly for my wife?s business and school runs. It doubles as the family car on those increasingly rare occasions when all 5 of us go out together. The Scenic is leased on a good deal including maintenance, but I doubt that we will get close to the 48k allowed by the lease over the lease which is up in September 2009. -
Weekend humour thread `interest` while motoring 8 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Rather yourself - resplendent in leather gear perhaps and looking like a Greek God - or perhaps, pot of yogurt. Some of you know how it can be - time moves on and it`s normal in your (60+) social circle to either 1) Preen and puff - premium shop clothes - image being all - including `the badge` on the drive. Often seen in shopping centres wearing yellow Pringle jumpers, a brown `bomber` leather jacket - with slacks and highly polished brown leather shoes. -
Vauxhall Vectra C (2002 - 2008) - 08 1.8 central locking and 4th gear problem 22 Jan 2009 (Forum)
When travelling between about 40/45mph and 60mph, the gear level vibrates enough to cause a mildly unpleasant rattly resonance in the plastic trim which surrounds the gear level (it;s probably the ashtray which is vibrating). On a 35-mile trip yesterday, I changed in and out of 4th gear and it was reliably present every time I used 4th, but only when under load (nothing when I lifted off the gas). -
Car rental rates 14 Nov 2008 (Forum)
For a variety of reasons I always took a taxi from the airport and rented a car from a small local company who had very good prices and were very helpful, but their range of cars was limited and with three growing and argumentative children I wanted cars that they did not have (e.g. small seven seater like a Kia Carens). Also, the cost of the taxi was more than a day?s car rental, so it made sense to rent a more suitable car from the airport when we arrive. So there are six companies with offices at the airport; five international companies and one large local company. -
BMW 5-Series E39 (1996 - 2003) - 1999 5.0 V8 M5 - Throttle Problems 8 Jul 2008 (Forum)
The fault still occurs and now they want to replace sensors on the clutch assembly, the clutch whilst it?s out and also an ECU. This is another total cost of £2500 - however they cannot guarantee this will work...and I don?t want to spend this money unless they can guarantee this will be the resolve. As you can appreciate I don? -
Which car to buy? 18 Mar 2008 (Forum)
Audi A3 2.0 TDI Sport - Again, I would only have the 53 reg model onwards, I don't like the old ones, probably a bit too small and a bit spartan, but I like the look of the car and it's the only diesel that doesn't seem to have common problems whilst still returning good mpg. Audi A4 2.0 TDI Sport - As per the A3, but I only like the S-Line model. So, what would the backroom buy? Budget is circa £6K, I'd be asking Joe Dowd to look out for whichever car I get to ensure that I get a decent price. (typo in header amended) -
Vauxhall Astra G Petrol (1998 - 2004) - '52 1.6 SOHC Full Beam /flash not working 23 Feb 2008 (Forum)
now either full beam, or flash (inc warning light on dash) fail to illuminate however when pulling the stick back you can hear what I assume to be the relay clicking TBH I have been totally disappointed with this version of the Astra, I have had issues with clattering hydraulic valve lifters, the thermostat is gone ? because the temp gage barely comes out of the cold zone, and when the car is cold it?s so sluggish, and clumsy. I can?t replace the thermostat myself because instead of putting it next to or near the radiator they have hidden it at the back under the timing belt cover Setting off when the car does get warm is no better, set of in first then the seems to be no power, and then suddenly it surges forward, its just not smooth, I used to own a MK1 Astra and have never experienced anything like this (apart from the engine running cool, which I could do the thermo myself as it was at the top of the engine bay next to the rad ? -

When does your driving style change? 6 Jun 2007 (Forum)
It is known that both ?emotional state? and ?motivation to save time? are factors which can influence a driver?s behaviour in the short term. The literature also indicates that other factors are likely to have an effect; although it is not known what all the influential factors are, or their relative importance. -
Sat Nav for a bike. 27 May 2007 (Forum)
TomTom was designed from a basic idea rather than evolved from previous incarnations as I suspect the Garmin is, consequently the Garmin isn't as user friendly as the TT in many respects including the on-screen menu, it has no internal power source so has to be used either in situ or plugged into the mains at least a TT can be used as a handheld if you need to. To me the 2610's menus are too complicated for use whilst on the move but route planning seems pretty simple and I like the feature of pre-programmed way points (to find fuel especially). The display on the TT is also far superior but the Garmin does work.
