N/A - Conviction, a lesson learned 31 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Anyway I asked for the photo as I'm not the only driver, but the image just showed my boot so there was no way I could tell, and both my wife and I could have been on the school run that day (we both do it). I wrote back saying apologising for speeding, saying that I couldn't identify the driver and there are no records of use of course. I DID say that I wanted to comply with the law, and that I would have to guess it could have been me driving and I'm the registered keeper so if they had they had to I would have accept the conviction myself to resolve the matter. -
Kia Rio 1.5 Diesel - Is this a fuel leak?? (Kia Rio) 29 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I then read this forum and took it out, gave it some welly and have since done two tests where I fill it up, drive either 50-100 miles, then fill up again and calculate the mpg. I'me very pleased to report that even one a commuting run it does 50+ mpg!! Could the earlier low mpg be to do with the fact that the car has never probably been driven, if it has only ever pootled to the shops and back? On Fri night I filled it to the brim, I put so much in I could see the fuel at the top of fuel pipe. -
DRLs 24 Aug 2010 (Forum)
Remembering the ‘smog’ of my youth days, fog lights were pretty useless then too. If the acronym DRL refers to ‘Daytime Running Lights’, then I became accustomed to DRLs when I owned a Volvo 440. Since then I have my dipped headlights permanently switched on. – if only because I because I then don’t forgot to switch the lights on at dusk. -
Honda Accord UK (1998 - 2003) - 2000 oxygen sensor faliure. 5 Aug 2010 (Forum)
I know from posts by others in here that this model has a reputation for eating O2 sensors so i hoped someone may have some experience here. One more thing i noticed, he has added a new wire under the bonnet! It runs from the battery neg terminal to what looks like the engine block or clutch housing area and is wrapped around the existing earth strap (i think thats what it is) which is very chunky. What might this be for? -
All - Changing to Automatics 14 Jul 2010 (Forum)
I have had autos since 1975,starting with a Renault 16TL auto when I was 30. It had an odd carburettor fault which made it stall after a fast run when coming to a stop at a junction.I taught myself to L foot brake, but it took a while. I had a 1926 Bullnose Morris for 9 years until 3years ago, which had a crash gearbox and centre accelerator. It took me about 18 months to get happy with it.In an emergency situation it was all too easy to hit the wrong pedal! -
Brass elephant - 2" tall - Lounge artifacts 10 Jul 2010 (Forum)
That has memories attached too - as does the small, pottery model of a Maltese bus. I remember the driver of one seeing us running - and busting a gut to get the bus away before we could get to it - with eye contact. Then there`s the small brass inlaid with other metal `egg cups` memories of one bought from a street vendor in Tunisia - polishing it and still doing so as we bought it. -
Audi A3 - Audi A3 problem 24 Jun 2010 (Forum)
He has a snap on diagnostic machine which doesnt pick up any problems, neither do I get any warning lights on the dash. I have been trying to fix the problem but I am running out of time, money and patience as it isnt a consistent problem. Not sure if it means anything but it has been worse since I serviced it a week ago, I changed the oil & filter, air filter & spark plugs. -
Ford Focus - 2000 Ford Focus 1.4 stalls at idle, dial probs 11 Jun 2010 (Forum)
In fact it only seems to do it when you're driving slowly in traffic in 1st gear and then put the clutch down. It still has the dials problem. I've run the self-test diagnostic test by holding down the trip button with ignition. It came up with error code 9359. Could mean an instrument cluster failure?? Would this be related? Should I just put up with the occasional stall? -
Slapping pistons - oil and the human ear 4 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Perhaps you removed the sound deadening too, so you could hear that `diesely sound` more clearly as you motor along (cough) So you are `tuned in` - you can hear these low frequency engine sounds - as in youth and find them interesting. You`ve done lots of oil changes on lots of engines and have run different viscosity oils through the same engine and know about the increased noise on lower viscosity oil. You may, for example have tried that new low viscosity oil from BP 40 years or so ago instead of Duckhams Q - and couln`t wait to swap it out again following the increased clatter. -
Skoda Octavia II (2004 - ) - Octavia at 50 5 Feb 2010 (Forum)
Average consumption is 56.5, more than I expected (the target was 55). Can't really add anything about space - it copes easily with our holiday runs to the South of France and sSWMBO almost takes the kitchen sink (I said no her request to take the rice cooker). Variable servicing so had two services, another should be due shortly (around 18k between services) and only had to put oil in once between services. -

Jaguar XJ6, XJ8, XJR (2003 - 2009) - 07 2.7 Car vibrating throughout at over 70mph 7 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Dealer says prior owner an elderly man who used for local trips... that at 6000 miles it is just a case that the car isn't run in yet. But it feels more like something is wrong to me. Why all the vibration? Any clever Jaguar or similar bods here, please? We want to use this car to tour Germany. And we want to be able to get out of trouble on a BRitish motorway, and if you can't get over 70 without being shaken to pieces then neither of those is ever going to happen. -
Peugeot 406 (1999 - 2004) - 99 2.0 Hissing noise 9 Dec 2009 (Forum)
The noise continues through out the rev range & happens in all gears and on a hot or cold engine. To go along with this when I turn off the engine after a run and open the bonnet there is a strange noise coming from the bulk head area around the 2 solenoid valves/EGR area. The noise is like a high/low pitched tone which fluctuates. When tapping either of the solenoids valves on the bulkhead the noise can also be 'made' to fluctuate. -
Ford Ka (2008 - ) - First month with my KA 19 Nov 2009 (Forum)

Negotiating at the bottom end of the market 28 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Would a small dealer give anything for it? Most of the cars I've seen on the web seem to be untaxed or running out of tax and I wonder whether this is a negotiating point in my price bracket? The age and engine size of the cars I'm viewing would give 12 months tax at £190 - is it reasonable to expect that amount of money off or tax thrown it on a bargain car? -
Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 96 1.8 TDi Starting problems 26 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Hi all, got an annoying issue with my beloved work-horse It's approaching 140k so is no spring chicken but runs as smooth as the day i bought it In a nutshell the problem is starting it: if I try to restart it after being let for say less than 4 minutes the engine turns over but it doesn't start (to describe it better if it were a petrol i'd say it's not firing) to get it to start i manually pump the fuel through using the manual pump thing lock the car wait for the immobiliser light to go red again then unlock, input the code and try again 99% of the time this sorts it PRoblem is it drives me round the bend, especially if i'm filling up with diesel, i ahve to go through this on the forcourt!! -
Mazda MPV (2000 - 2007) - 53 plate Mazda MPV - keep or replace? 26 Sep 2009 (Forum)
TBH although something a little smaller would probably suffice now, I'd probably be looking for something similar - or just possibly a large estate. Reliability and low running costs are key for me with issues like handling and outright performance secondary. I'm not a frustrated rally driver with a large family and a tight budget :) When it comes to other factors in my original choice of car, the sliding rear doors and versatility offered by having 5 removeable seats were at the top of the list and I also liked the combination of electric sunroof and separate front/rear air-con but I realise some compromise on such things may be required. -
Crash in NW London 23 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Driving his 2 year old Auris diesel with his wife and both adult children as passengers in Neasden or Wembley, he was run into by another car and the Auris written off. He said the other car, containing an Indian family with a baby in a child seat, came round a l/h bend - r/h to my BiL of course - apparently out of control, hit the kerb on its own n/s and came across the road, hit a parked car and then crashed head-on into my BiL's car, n/s front to n/s front... -
Worst bike ever...unless you know better! 22 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Cheekily, (fotunately), I haven't had the pleasure of riding the one that I'd like to nominate, the Norton Commander. Imgine the scene; early 1990's, Regents Street, London, in the run up to Christmas. It's 4.30 in the afternoon, it's wet and it's just turning dark. Visor up, making my way through the traffic I come up behind a member of the London Ambulance Service on the Norton. -
Mazda RX7 Twin-Turbo (1992 - 2002) - 94 1.3 Starter Motor Issue 19 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Hi, sisters boyfriend turned up at our house the other day in his rx7 which was exhibiting a high pitched squeal when running, after a bit of quick searching it was the starter motor that had stuck on. the car was left for awhile due to rain, after i removed the starter motor and inspected it, the gear teeth showed clear signs of having been stuck on, i gave the motor a blow out with compressed air, checked all the terminals were clean and refitted the unit. when he went to start the car the starter motor started turning over when the key was in the second position not the start position.
