• Towing an untaxed, uninsured vehicle. 23 Jun 2004 (Forum)
  The police tell me this is illegal and will invalidate the insurance on the tow-car as well. Therefore if I want to tow my old SIII Landy to a garage for repair work, prior to an MOT, can I just get a short term third party insurance cover and nothing else? Obviously I cannot get a tax disk prior to a successful MOT, and what if the garage where I'm having the repair work carried out is not an MOT centre?

  What is the law on these? I thought the vehicle had to be stationary to use them but i am often very distracted by tow trucks including AA towing on the motorway with the lights flashing for no good reason that I can see. THey are moving at least as fast as a caravan so why the need to have them flashing. When stationary obviously they are useful.

  I ask only because I'm interested... Why does there seem to be a presumption against towing with automatics? I regularly tow a horse & trailer (total about 1.75 tonne), previously with an auto Rangey classic, and now with my X5. I've never had a problem, but when I tell people, I get the pursed lips and shaking head treatment.

  I currently own a ford sierra 2.o lt injection which I use to tow my dandy trailer tent (aprox 300kg). The sierra is a super tow car but is now looking tatty and I am thinking of a change. Does any have any advise as I'm thinking about trying an automatic, eg honda concerto 1.6 or mitsubishi lancer 1.6/1.8.

  Just need some advice... I am in the process of purchasing a Hilux, my intention is caravan towing, but I have been hearing that transmission overheat problems can occur. Anyone aware of this or can this be disputed.

  Can anyone recommend a good vehicle for towing a boat occasionally - boat is 2000lb. We used to borrow a friends van but he no longer has it. Vehicle would need to be family of four (plus dog) friendly. Vehicle would have to be used as the family runabout.

  can anyone tell me if there is anything to watch for when fitting the electrics side of fitting a tow bar . do the wires just scotch lock on to the relevent wires at the back of the car . its a 2000 w reg zetec model ( hatch ). cheers

  I aim to tow the car 5 miles to a mechanic, have a tow rope but can't figure out how to attach it to the civic.  The Manual isn't a lot of use, merely stating that it should be towed by a professional. Any help or infor would be greatly appreciated.

  When towing a caravan the fridge relay is intermittantly on and off. Is there a problem with the alternator output. Have heard that Honda automatically reduce the voltage under low load conditions. Is this correct and if so, is there a solution?

  I've just treated myself to a Subaru Forester XE but find the dealer's price for a tow bar a bit steep. I've heard of companies who'll pop round and fit a bar while you're at work or home - any experiences, are they any good?

  I know toyota are good at high mileages (I have an old corolla) This car would be a cheap option - assuming it drives OK. I haven't towed b4, and if I made a mistake and it wasn't suitable, or I broke it with the extra load on the car, the car is cheap enough to just bin..... And if it "worked" and I find towing OK (not too stressful) it is cheap enough to upgrade to a newer similar type of vehicle in a years time without losing a fortune Has anyone ever towed a large caravan with one of these cars ?

  Hi - just collected my 2012MY HSE with detatchable towbar with the intention of towing an Ifor Williams twin axle horse box with 2 ponies in it. I know the towing capacity of the RRS will easily pull this, but Im concerned about the nose weight of 150kg. I dont expect the centre of gravity of the load to be abonomal i.e. it should be right over the axles Does anyone have experience in this area, any warnings ?

  I am looking to replace my diesel Suzuki Grand Vitara with a petrol tow car, idealy one with an auto to tow a caravan weighing some 1350 Kg. I do less than 10K miles pa, and I understand your advice for this sort of milage is to go petrol. The likely candidates that I have seen so far are the Ford Kuga or Kia Sportage, both having a turbo petrol auto option.
• Honda HRV - Honda HRV 2015- Suitability for Towing 26 May 2016 (Forum)
  Honda state ‘ that the capacity of the alternator with the HR-V is not high enough, meaning that during towing …….. the caravan can drain the battery’. So check carefully before you buy an HRV for caravanning and you may avoid the expensive mistake we made. For us the new HRV is not suitable as a tow car.
