    The Morgan +E prototypes will be powered by a new version of Zytek’s 94bhp 300Nm electric powertrain, which is already supplied to some US vehicle manufacturers. The battery pack will be integrated into the aluminium chassis. The two engineering concepts should be completed in 2012.

    Winterkorn spoke in support of more targeted research funding, especially in the field of electro-chemistry for battery technology. Volkswagen also showcased two new engines at the Vienna symposium, a variant of the current 1.4 TSI that runs on E85, a fuel which isn’t commonly available in the UK but is in Scandinavia, and a new 2.0 TDI diesel engine for the US market, with improved fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions.

    Produced by Norwegian company Think, the city car outputs zero emissions, zero CO2 and comes at a low cost. It is also energy-efficient, with a battery that can fuel the vehicle for 126 miles when fully charged, while it is made out of material which makes it 95 per cent recyclable. An environmentally-friendly model such as the city car could also result in cheaper car insurance policies from some cover providers.

    The station’s chargers draw power from renewable sources, including solar panels installed on the station’s canopies and the company’s network of hybrid solar farms. There’s also a 6MWh battery onsite to help balance the supply of power during peak times. According to Gridserve, "on windy winter nights the battery can store enough energy to drive 24,000 miles in electric vehicles the following day."

The van also uses a modular chassis design and carbon-fibre body construction.   • Tiny 1970s British electric vehicle smashes world speed record 19 Jul 2016 (News)
    Jonny rescued the Enfield, then a flood-damaged write-off, four years ago, and restored the car before adding 21st century electric technology. The car is powered by 188 lithium-ion battery cells built into enclosures under the bonnet and boot, generating 2000 amps and 400 volts to a pair of DC 9-inch motors to drive the back wheels. These batteries are normally seen running the miniguns and starting the engines of a Bell Super Cobra attack helicopter, but built for the car by Hyperdrive Innovations in Sunderland.

It has been looked after by an independent VW specialist for over 20 years. Nice touches are the period bodykit and Pirelli P-Slot alloys, along with the unusual Graphite Grey paintwork, although the owner admits this is getting tired in places – the roof, apparently, needs a respray and there’s some corrosion around the door handles (common, cosmetic…) and to one sill (probably not disastrous, but worth checking carefully).
