  • Peugeot 406 hdi vs Volvo v40 £2,000 24 Dec 2005 (Forum)
Since my Corolla has been written off, one option (other than fixing the damage) is to get a run-about for the next 6 months .... I noticed 406 hdi's going for less than £2,000 - any good ? Since I drive about 80 miles per day, diesel would help - how do I make sure it's not a 'clocked' taxi ?
  • Best time to change the oil ? 1 Nov 2005 (Forum)
The reason I ask is, IIRC modern oils are actually thinner (less viscous) when cold, so would actually flow better cold. Based on this (and maybe answering my own post), would it be best to run the engine up for a few minutes to stir up the crud and then drain the oil whilst still cold. What do you guys think ?

  • Rumble from corner of Citroen AX 24 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Hi, I just bought a cheap and nasty '92 Citroen AX Echo 1.1 for £250. Engine sounds fine and runs clean and it has just passed its MOT so engine permitting I'm hoping not to need to do anything to it for a year. However, I have noticed the car has a rumble from the front left corner when travelling.
  • Rover 75 oil and filter change 1 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Question is, what oil should the garage be using as i am aware that they just have one big barrell that they use for every oil change (well one for Petrol and one for diesel) Does my engine need special oil..being commonrail diesel i was wondering whether run of the mill stuff is doing any damage..this will be the 5th change this year and everything has been ok so far but dont want to cause any long term damage thanks in advance
  • Mazda 626 noisy tappets 26 Jul 2005 (Forum)
His next suggestion is to replace all of the valves/tappets but this would work out to be quite costly with there being 16 of them. Question is, what would be the consequences of doing nothing and continuing to run the car. Is engine damage likely? Thoughts appreciated Thanks
  • I'm SO mad 3 Jul 2005 (Forum)
Despite the presence of 20 mph limit signs and and 'no overtaking' signs, you decided to go for it, and thanks to you I now have a bonnet thats covered in a million little stonechips and a windscreen with a crack running the length of it that will no doubt cos me hundreds to put right. You'd better hope that I never see you driving about again. There is no real point to this post, I just needed a place to have a rant.
  • Mk II Golf 1.8 Carburettor 1 Jul 2005 (Forum)
I know these get moaned about a lot and people say bin it and buy a Weber - but that isn't an option on a rushed Friday afternoon when my mission is simply to get it running. Any hints or general pointers?

  • Computer Related Questions - Volume 55 2 Jun 2005 (Forum)
She has emailed her cv to various places and was amazed to find that one company not only had the cv she had sent but had managed to read the saved(unedited/corrected) version(s)of it. We run windows xp pro and microsoft word. I have two questions. 1 Is this possible and how? An explanation suitable for a computer illiterate would be appreciated. 2 I told her to copy the text in reasonable "chunks" and paste it into a new document which would not need editing.
  • Mercedes E300D 95 leaking fuel 24 Apr 2005 (Forum)
It looks like the pipe is just a push fit without any sort of clip but I was peering at it with a torch so I may be wrong. The fuel has run down the side of the whole engine block. (good job it is not petrol!) Can anyone tell me what this unit is and what I am likely to need to fix it Thanks Steve
  • Traffic report 20 Apr 2005 (Forum)
Traffic in to Victoria Island was at a complete standstill but as we were heading out to Lekki office we had a pretty clear run of it.
  • Fiesta mk 4 Idle problem 13 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I have an S reg Fiesta Ghia x with a zetec 1.4s engine, started to notice that when I approached junction at low revs the engine would sometimes stall this will occasionally happen when I am in sittting in traffic and the engine is idling it will rev fine for a while and then suddenly revs will drop and either stall or almost stall and then revs go back to a normal level, there is no set pattern either for this sometimes it does it and sometimes not. Car starts fine every time and runs fine in higher revs just seems to have a problem idling totally confused about the cause of this any ideas much appreciated !!.
  • 306 noise when cornering 11 Apr 2005 (Forum)
my lad has just bought his first car a pug 1.4 306, the car runs well enough but we have some problems to solve, first one is when the car is cornering a knocking noise can be heard from the front of the car, lve checked the wheel bearings - no play and the wheels spin freely enough with no apparent noise, l then jacked the front of the car up and turned the steering from side to side there is a knocking/grinding noise coming from the top of the suspension mounts one side louder than the other, could this be the noise when driving the car?
  • Audi A6 loss of power 10 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I have had my a6 for 18mnths with no problems but recently when on motorways etc at around 70mph there is a distinct loss of power and pulling and it feels like the engine is missing. I have been to a independent Audi garage and they have run a diag' and no faults have come up. They suggest the problem could be the air mass sensor but they are not sure. They also told me to check that the turbo was working. They suggested that i remove the hose from the front of the turbo and spin the shaft to determine seizure or not.It looks like a fiddly job to me.
  • 2001 Mondeo 115 Tddi turbo surge 15 Mar 2005 (Forum)
I've been running my Mondeo for nearly a year now covering some 20k miles. On odd occasions during acceleration the turbo becomes what might be described as 'lumpy'. It feels like the effect of a 'kick-down' on an automatic and the engine gives out a throaty noise, it will then clear itself to give a smooth acceleration and then go through the same motions again until changing up a gear.
  • Clio Electric Windows 31 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Electric window drivers side has had a small piece of plastic which can only be described as a runner for the cable to run through. This piece of plastic snapped ( well the corner anyway ) and I have been advised by Renault dealer that I need to purchase a whole new regulator unit costing £156 + VAT. All for the sake of a 3 pence piece of plastic.
  • Fiesta 2004 1.4 Coolant level 16 Jan 2005 (Forum)
My 2004 fiesta has done 7000 miles, and when doing the routine checks i noted that the oil and coolant level were approaching min. I can understand oil levels going down on a new car since it is being run in, and hence i have topped this up. But a low coolant level concerns me slightly. Should i take the car back to ford to have the system pressure checked for leaks, or is it normal for a car to use some coolant (none of my last cars have ever had a drop in coolant level which is why i am asking).
  • SORN cannot be backdated? 15 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Its old SORN now lapses, and I must re-declare SORN myself. But ?SORN applications cannot be backdated?, and apparently can run from the first of a month only. So what happens about the 2-3 week gap before my new SORN starts?
