I'd just like to say thankyou to the idiot in the silver 106 who overtook me on an uphill stretch of dual carriageway near me that had just been re-surfaced. Despite the presence of 20 mph limit signs and and 'no overtaking' signs, you decided to go for it, and thanks to you I now have a bonnet thats covered in a million little stonechips and a windscreen with a crack running the length of it that will no doubt cos me hundreds to put right. You'd better hope that I never see you driving about again.
There is no real point to this post, I just needed a place to have a rant. Rant is now over.

Your windscreen will be covered by comprehensive insurance, if you are on comprehensive, and subject to an XS. The local council or whoever is responsible for this cheapskate way of resurfacing a road might entertain a claim. If you know that it was a silver 106 didn't you get some or all of the reg number?

Unlikely if correct road signs were in place as has been mentioned.Though would think the driver of vehicle that caused damage would be had for speeding. If caught?

A "recommendation" rather than a compulsory limit.

driving without due care i would guess as its reasonable to assume racing over loose chippings will throw them up onto anyone nearby

shame u didnt get his number

but then he is probably on false plates anyway

"but then he is probably on false plates anyway"

Why, because any one that does something stupid is "obvioulsy" an (very) organised criminal?

You must live in Staffordshire too then?! They are resurfacing sections of the roads around me. In fact there is only one route into town which doesn't have loose chippings. Stick to 20 and you'll have some goon up your exhaust pipe.

Fully comp insurance should cover it bar about £50. If you go to national windscreens or an independent windscreen specialist you should find a replacement screen is no more than about £150 at full whack. Autoglass quote much higher prices. National windscreens usually let you say you're trade and you get a decent price, they're quite friendly like that!

well we seem to have a very high proportion of people driving with number plates obscured by cycle racks or mud, missing/damaged plates, or good old fashioned false plates

its not the big time criminals doing this, they can afford hire cars and the like, its people trying to avoid points for failing to spot a camera

be nice if we had more good honest cops on the streets, guy in this incident that did the overtaking sounds like a good candidate for their attention

Where did you get that view from?
Is it that bad on the roads in Britain?

Does his screen name not give you a clue? Wind it in please; less of the acerbic statements of "fact" accorting to taylor.

Teabelly- Yes it was in Staffordshire- Keele bank to be precise if you know it. Unfortunately I'm only 3PFT so I'll have to bear the full cost of windscreen replacement myself, but on the other hand I used to work for a garage and I know a local windscreen fitter quite well and he says he can get a new screen and fit it for 90 quid. So it could have been worse.

I've been up that very bank today. Some silly cow in a fiesta decided to overtake me, revving the guts out of her car in about 1st gear by the sound of it. I'm not sure what part of 'no overtaking' was so difficult to grasp....

£90 isn't too bad for a windscreen including fitting.

Corsadriver - I can completely understand your upset and frustration! I've just had something similar happen to me...

Stayed at the boyfriends last night and left my car at home. Got a call off my mum at 1.45am as some idiot had decided it would be hilarious to launch a traffic cone through my front windscreen, you know, like you do! Rang the police but because nobody saw anything they didnt send anyone out last night but I have to meet someone today.

Like corsadriver I'm only tpft and so have to pocket the whole of the bill myself for the new windscreen and there is damage to the paintwork on the bonnet so its gonna have to pay a visit to the body shop. A new windscreen is to be fitted today (sunday) and is costing close to £250!!! Who knows what the body work is going to cost me!

The cone was near my car as the bakers over the road had been using it to reserve a spot at the rear of the shop which he uses as a drive even though the land is not his to block off and doesnt have a dropped kerb etc and therefore is not a drive way. As they are responsible for the cones what does anyone think of my chances of getting the owner to pay for the damage to my car as he is effectively vicariously liable even thought he didnt throw the cone on my car....????

I think that in that situation the only solutions are to either:

a) Floor it when they try to overtake, forcing them to abort. Depends on your car whether you can pull this off, as it might just be you get overtaken at twice the speed. Also extremely dangerous.

b) Stand on the anchors when you see them start to pass. You'll still be pebble-blasted, but hopefully for not as long.

c) Move out into the middle of the road when you see them pull out to pass. Even more dangerous than (a).

d) Let it happen, follow them home and demand insurance details. Risk of damage to various body parts depending on driver.

e) Catch up, attempt to get them to pull over, fail, get their reg number and report it to the police as they left the scene of an accident without giving details.
