Mk II Golf 1.8 Carburettor - GrahamF1
Tommorow I'm having a look at a mate's Mk II Golf 1.8 which has cutting out problems (like a short while after starting, everytime - undriveable) that he believes is due to fuelling / carburettor issues.

It's quite tweaked - in fact it's very quick - but I'm not sure what fuels it and he doesn't really know much. Assuming it's original, is it a downdraught Pierburg carb? I know these get moaned about a lot and people say bin it and buy a Weber - but that isn't an option on a rushed Friday afternoon when my mission is simply to get it running.

Any hints or general pointers?

There are a number of Pierburg carbs (of course), and for reasons I don't understand this appears to be a common problem across the range. When I started having the problem on my 1.3 Golf II, on asking around I discovered the guy who worked behind me had the same problem on his 1600 Cavalier. Both had Pierburg carbs. I also knew someone who had this problem on a Golf (II) Driver, which I guess was 1.8 with a carb (is that right?). In my case the problem only lasted a couple of minutes, and only during cold weather, so I just lived with it, and I don't think it was big problem to the other guys either. You can get around it by notching up the idle speed, but as it wasn't a big problem for me I preferred to stick to the specs. Changing the carb would have been an excessively expensive solution. If this one is really bad, maybe it's a partially blocked jet.

I should add my car wasn't undrivable, it would just cut out on stopping or sometimes on changing gear. In the former case I would just wait till it was time to move off and restart the engine, and in the latter case lifting the clutch would restart it, albeit with a jerk.

Sounds like icing to me,especially if it has been tweaked and the original filter housing has been replaced. If original ensure the mechanism for directing hot air from the exhaust to the filter box is functioning correctly.
