• BMW 316 - starting problem 6 Nov 2005 (Forum)
  Hi all - back again. I recently bought an 'N' reg BMW 316 - 1.6 Saloon. The car runs fine but sometimes has a problem starting. When i turn the key the car just has a whirring noise and doesnt start the engine. I then turn the ey back and try again until it starts - so its happening quite a bit.

  How do you rate the engineering, design and manufacturing philosophy of the three German car manufactureres such as VW/Audi as compared to BMW and Me0rcedes. Do you beleive these cars are unnecesarily complicated or over engineered? How much difference is thier between a mass produced ford/vauxhall and say a mass produced BMW or Merecedes.

  I have a cousin the same age as me (late 20's). We are both spending just over 20 grand this month, me on a very modest 2 bedroom house, him on a BMW 3 series (imported from Germany via the internet). Fair enough, his BMW will look good and turn heads and my new house won't, but in five years time my house will hopefully be worth what I paid for it and his BMW will be worth 5 grand-ish.

  I went into the Audi expecting little but it over delivered. I went into the BMW expecting a lot and it under delivered. Ultimately there is swings and roundabouts of both cars but they end up both as very good cars and are difficult to separate. I fully accept that some people may say that the S-Line Audi and the SE BMW are not fair comparisons and I should be comparing the M Sport.

  I called Warranty claim department who had me give the BMW dealership a direct number. BMW called Warranty Direct explained the work and I got a call from Warranty Direct saying that I was not covered under their policy. The policy says that oil leaks are not covered unless the engine has to be removed to fix it, as this job takes 7 hours to do.
