It is more like a natural progression - M5 is v10, so M3 had to be a V8, especially since 335i would mount the current M3 a serious challange. Besides even the 1 series is now endowed with a straight six.
Preusumably this means that in a few years down the line M5s will come with V12s!
There are more sound tracks on piston heads - it is very, very intoxicating.

The sad thing is that the vast majority will end up in the hands of City poseur types, who will spend most of their time trundling around town without even beginning to appreciate the monumental engineering talent that's gone into the car.
I think the same thing every time I see a new M5 or 997 Turbo in West London traffic.

Infuriating, I see it frequently round my neck of the woods, some female driver in a 911 with absolutely no idea or care about the performance / engineering of the vehicle they are driving as though it's a mini. (sorry for the sexist nature of that comment!)

I have mentioned on here before that I once "raced" an F40 on an FZR600 about 15 years ago, on the A30 from Wentworth Golf Club lights southbound I stayed with it until about 80 when we both eased off though I could hear even through my helmet a chirp from the back tyres as the F40 went from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 3rd ..
Re the M3 V8, apparently Top Gear have the M3, RS4 and C63 on thsi week, the E63 estate blitz an M5 in a straightline a few weeks ago so the BMW and Audi wont stand a chance in performance terms.
As they say, there aint' no substitute for cubes!

Just read the Autocar piece on the C63 and they use the same term as I did above - "blitz":
"It may not be quite as explosive compared with an M3 over the final 1500rpm, but the AMG blitzes the BMW for overall performance.
Blitzes? You?d better believe it. Despite the C63?s faintly amusing traction issues over the first few feet, it?s still quick enough to level with the M3 from 0-30mph (2.1sec). And by the time 150mph is registered it is a quite incredible 3.6sec further down the road than the BMW (22.9sec vs 26.5sec)."
