  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 99 1.8 ABS fuse keeps blowing 30 Nov 2009 (Forum)
I discovered the fuse had blown and so I looked up what it did and it was the following: 25A Reverse light switch - Auto box relay - Brake lights switch - Day running lights relay - Cooling Fan relay - Pressure switch control - Compressor relay - ABS control unit I put in a new fuse and magically my ABS light switched off and the car was fixed :) (worryingly Id been driving for weeks with no brake lights) Anyway this morning the light came back on and the fuse has blown again.
  • Another New Car Choice Query 25 Nov 2009 (Forum)
It has similiar fittings to her Mondeo, such as heated windscreen and trip computer etc., all items which she is keen to retain in a new car. I run a Honda Accord Tourer and that is our general load carrier, so as long as her new car will accommodate her mother plus wheelchair then that would be ok. Almost all of her driving is on A and B roads, and she likes to have power to overtake when safe and appropriate.
  • Citroen C5 II (2008 - ) - Good looking deal on 59 plate 23 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Took it for a spin and now prepared to do a deal. The dealer is a very nice chap, and he was very apologetic as he was run off his feet, so he will call back tomorrow. Mine to P/E is 57 plate Megan Estate, 1.9 CDi, Dynamique trim, 130bhp in metallic black with FSH, but 45,000miles. His is on for £13500, I think to change cost should be around £6000 (giving £7500 for mine) - is that fair?

  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 01 2.8 Exhaust white smoke after 2 months left sta 25 Oct 2009 (Forum)
I'm not sure if the head gasket has gone while sitting on the driveway or if here is some way damp has got in with recent rain and cold? I'm not sure if I should run it longer to see if it clears or if that might damage the engine - as it's currently SORN and no insurance I can't get it to a garage for anyone to have a look. Should I change the oil and see if that fixes it?
  • Hydrogen Modification 17 Oct 2009 (Forum)
In this day & age of rising fuel costs & higher taxation i have decided to modify my car to run on a mixture of hydrogen & diesel its a simple procedure of converting tap water to hydrogen gas then fed into the engine along with your existing fuel whether it be petrol or diesel. It Improves mpg in town, open road and motorway conditions.
  • Vauxhall Cavalier (1988 - 1995) - 94 1.8 misfire/judder when idle 12 Oct 2009 (Forum)
hi new to forum recently bought a old cav as a winter hack while motorbike comes off the road for the winter.was running perfect when i bought it.parkesd it on the drive about a week later replaced rocker cover gasket as it was leaking, topped oil up with some 15w40 semi synthetic.started it up and now there is a horrible vibration when inside the car and the engine is slightly misfiring.removed plugs to find out which cylinder was misfiring seems to be no.4 as plug is a soot black colour where the other 3 are tan.replaced all plugs and leads but still with no joy.is it just co incedence that this occured when i changed rocker cover gasket.also cyl no.4 lifter is tappy which it wasnt before i changed gasket.the old gasket was a cork one and had to be scraped off,if a bit of old gasket flung intothe top of the engine.could this cause the misfire.or is it a sticky lifter as it had sat for 2 weeks before i bought it.i have put some hydralic lifter treatment in incase it is a sticky lifter but cant drive it as am not insured yet so can only rev it on the drive to work the treatment round. any help suiggestions greatly appreciated as unsure what it could be it is a 94 lreg cavalier 1.8 auto fitted with c18nz engine and it has the ignotion where there is no dizzy cap.thanks
  • Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 01 1.0 Timing chain noise? 28 Sep 2009 (Forum)
Mechanically sailed through the MOT and bodywork great. I am aware that there is a noticeable 'tick' all the time when running - not the usual engine noise I hasten to add, that from its location I would take to be the timing chain. I am aware that these Corsa'a use the Suzuki engine and that these can be prone to have the oil jet that lubricates the chain block up.
  • Ford Ka (2008 - ) - filler cap and passenger door issues 8 Sep 2009 (Forum)
They find it quite difficult to get it on and/or off (sorry can't remember exactly what they said), and when they mentioned it to the chap at the local Ford dealer, he had a go and failed. Dad points out that not being able to get petrol into it does wonders for the running costs though :-) 2. No external lock on the passenger door. My parents opted not to have central locking (no I don't know why either), but there's no key hole in the passenger door, so mum has to wait for dad to open his door and open her door from the inside (I guess on the previous Micra they had 2 keys).
  • Brighton/South Downs area route advice this wk/end 28 Aug 2009 (Forum)
My son has lived in Brighton for the last 4 years and consequently I've got quite used to the run from Gloucestershire - but I've always avoided Bank Holidays for obvious reasons. I need to go down on Sunday (the only day we are both free) to deliver quite a bulky item to him so the train is not an option.
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - Zetec 1.6 TDCI - 06, 70,000miles - good deal? 28 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I know the high mileage young car is well discussed and I think I probably take the side of a car with high miles and low years by default must have hit the majority of them on the motorway which is good news for the engine. What about the clutch though, likely to run out any time soon? How much is it going to cost me to get the cam belt replaced when it reaches 100k miles. Anything I am missing, please point it out. Any advice, constructive comments would be very much appreciated.
  • USA ABS report for data 1995 to 2007 26 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Analysis of US accident data Abtract Statistical analyses based on data for calendar years 1995 to 2007 from the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS) and the General Estimates System (GES) of the National Automotive Sampling System (NASS) estimate the long-term effectiveness of antilock brake systems (ABS) for passenger cars and LTVs (light trucks and vans) subsequent to the 1995 launch of public information programs on how to use ABS correctly. ABS has close to a zero net effect on fatal crash involvements. Fatal run-off-road crashes of passenger cars increased by a statistically significant 9 percent (90% confidence bounds: 3% to 15% increase), offset by a significant 13-percent reduction in fatal collisions with pedestrians (confidence bounds: 5% to 20%) and a significant 12-percent reduction in collisions with other vehicles on wet roads (confidence bounds: 3% to 20%).

i have a renault clio, cambelt snapped, bent 2 valves, done all and refit all, all worked fine until i noticed the directional arrows on the cambelt were going the wrong way upon engine running! so i opted to remove cambelt and put back on correct way, wish i never! somhow on doing this i refit cambelt ,started engine or tried to start engine and it sounded same as first instance of bent valve syndrome!
  • Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - 99 2.5 parked up overnight and wont start now 3 Jul 2009 (Forum)
I have tried the paperclip trick to read the error codes...but obviously i cant do this with the engine running as it wont start... I get the following results... 10 3 3 0 which i assume is 0 3 3 0 (knock sensor 2 ??) and when i try and start the car it changes to ... 10 3 3 5 which i assume is 0 3 3 5 (crank sensor ??)
  • Citroen - 05 2.0 Strange noise, goes when clutch is pressed 1 Jul 2009 (Forum)
The noise changes with engine rev and gear. It happens in all gears. And if the car is parked, with the engine running on idle, in neutral, I can still hear it, but if I then press the clutch down, the noise disappears. It seems to be from the front of the car, but closer to us than the engine. The source seems to be between the cabin and the engine, as if from behind the dashboard, like behind the radio, or between the dashboard and the engine.
  • Advice Needed: Mondeo diesel 155 or Octavia 140 18 Jun 2009 (Forum)
Obviously I am familiar with a mondeo but has anyone driven both the mondeo 155 and Octavia 140 and can offer me a comparison in terms of performance, drive, build quality, running costs etc. Or should I just throw caution to the wind and go for the VRS despite its high mileage although it has 14 months left of manufacturer's warranty? Are there any other cars that I should consider?
  • Vauxhall Astra H (2004 - 2009) - Dumb diesel design or cant be helped? Which? 8 Jun 2009 (Forum)
My questions are thus:- 1) Should EGR valve cleaning be considered routine maintenance? 2) If the inlet manifolds of a diesel car had exhaust soot running through it, is it only a matter of time before things like swirl flaps choke up? The GM/FIAT 1.9 diesel is known to have swirl flap issues. 3) Are design engineers hamstrung by cost / emissions legislations such that its a good idea to have exhaust soot whistling past (therfore collecting on) what look like delicate servo driven tumblers in the inlet manifold?
  • Dealer sinks to new low 27 May 2009 (Forum)
I was at a local independent service/repair/MOt garage this week getting my son's car MOT'd when a young woman came in to pick her Citroen C2. I got chatting to the guy who runs the garage and he told me the lady had taken the C2 (57 plate 10,000 mileage) into the main dealer for a service. The dealer had rang her at home to say the front pads were "80% worn" and needed changing urgently.
  • Hitchhiking 1965 and on........................... 11 May 2009 (Forum)
They spent the whole journey to Loughborough telling me they hated students, with me trying to pretend I was not wearing the highly visible purple, yellow and grey University scarf. I had developed an escape strategy which involved removing the keys and making a run for it if necessary. The thought of outrunning anyone now seems a distant memory. Plan never implemented, they even went out of their way to drop me off. I can only think they were winding me up. Once a hitcher, always a hitcher, and over the intervening time I have both given and received a variety of lifts without adverse incident.
  • Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - 04 1.6 110hdi squeak / chirp on startup / clutch 2 May 2009 (Forum)
The car has covered 96K miles, always serviced on the dot, and had the DMF and clutch replaced at 93K after failure (peugeot main dealer, it was my father's company car). Otherwise a nice car (apart from the blasted fan running on when stopped). What kind of thing could I be looking at here? Also, I was very surprised when I asked the garage and they told me the cambelt isn't due til 144K or something equally implausible - my 2000 406 90HDI was every 80K!
