  • Baby on Board 11 Oct 2007 (Forum)
In fact the only reason I can think of is that these signs make the driver think they do not have to obey the rules of the road, e.g. on the school run. Any other ideas?
  • BMW 3-Series E36 (1991 - 1998) - 1995 328i - Breakdown!! Help!! 4 Sep 2007 (Forum)
My previously 100% reliable 328i touring broke down on me this morning. The engine simply started running a little rough which I thought might clear when the traffic started to move off but instead it cut out and wouldn't restart. The starter initially tried to start the car but after say 5/6 attempts the engine no longer turned over.

This has occurred three times so far and friend scratching his head and he knows a fair bit about motors. Any suggestions. dvd slight tweak to subject line - PU

  • Bland cars 8 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Got back to Stansted and picked up 12 year old Pug 306 with heavy clutch, rattly bits and pieces and no aircon but what a joy to drive after the Nissan. I'm sure the Nissan was safer, more economical and it didn't smell as if it was running on coal dust but how can any manufacturer produce a car that is so utterly bland?
  • Ideas for replacement car 5 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Below is what I would like the replacement to have (1) Aircon (2) Same size boot or larger (3) Reliable and cheap to run (4) Diesel (5) A bit younger in age if possible (6) Good performance i.e same as the 416 or better (7) I have around £600 min to £1300 to spend on top of what the rover will fetch. I think that's it, and look forward to receiving the replies Cheers Ommited bit edited in for you - PU
  • Peugeot 205 - Battery or Alternator ? 23 Jul 2007 (Forum)
    When I turn the key there is nothing, not even a click of the starter. I put the battery on a booster charge for 15 mins. and she starts fine and runs for the rest of the day without problems restarting her. Next morning--dead. So, how can I tell if the battery is shot or if it is the alternator failing to charge the battery? Ta {Car details added to attract the attention of Peugeot owners - DD}
  • BMW E34 525tds fan belt replacement 10 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Have removed the undertray to get at crank pulley but think the tensioner has shifted and can't work out visually what the belt run should be or how to reposition the tensioner and set up the belt. If anyone has pictures, manual, instuctions would be v. grateful. Thanks
  • Concrete Barriers 6 Jul 2007 (Forum)
On a recent trip to Plymouth, I noticed several new installations of this type at various locations. Does anyone know the reasoning behind this new idea? Running through my head is the possibility that time and expense of Armco repairs will be eased, but I would have thought that considerably larger costs will result in vehicle damage, and I worry about increased passenger injury and death.
  • Peugeot 406: any benefit from vpower 30 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I was wondering if there would be any benefit from using shell vpower or bp ultimate. I have read the manual and it does not mention whether it is better to run on 95 or 98 RON. I understand that some cars can adjust their fuel consumption according to the type of petrol being used. Will this happen in my car? I would appreciate any help and advice from users of BP ultimate or shell vpower, or peugeot owners, (and anyone else for that matter)
  • Mondeo 2l 1997 timing belt tension 14 Jun 2007 (Forum)
I'm following the haynes manual advice but the belt tensioner doesn't seem to work correctly. I fit the tensioner but it's almost like the spring is too long. Once the car is running I intend to replace the belt and tensioner anyway even though I was told it was done recently. I didn't want to spend another £50ish if the head refurb wasn't going to work. Any ideas please? I am desperate not to get this part wrong and wave goodbye to my egine.
  • MOT failure - advice needed 14 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Tester not very helpful as to pointing out where leak coming from, just says I need a new fuel pipe and watching his hand run from back to front of car was not reasurring. Any way call round a few motor factors including the European specialists and they have said the "fuel pipe" is a dealer only part. Called local Audi dealer and was quoted £190 for a fuel pipe.
  • Toyota carina e - question? 31 May 2007 (Forum)
My question is: I have had installed the flash lube system, of which details can be found at http://www.flashlube.com.au/valvesaverkit/index.html When an engine normally runs, what flows where the lubricant is allowed in (between the butterfly valve and inlet manifold). The reason I ask, is if it is petrol, then could I use petrol as a lubricant alternative safely as I have found that the flash lube smells exactly the same as petrol.
  • Break down cover 12 May 2007 (Forum)
My theory is I bought a good car and take good care of it. I have never broke down in 16 years of driving, but is my luck going to run out? One other theory I have is that by not having cover has saved me 16 annual subscriptions so if they charge £800 to tow me home I'm still in pocket. The car will be changed when it become troublesome (baring premium bond jackpots!)
  • 240v tyre pump. 7 May 2007 (Forum)
Having done all the usual net searches, could anyone please advise if they know of a small suitcase type tyre pump/compressor which runs from the 240v mains, as opposed to the 12v accessory socket type? One of these has just timed out on Ebay. It was a grey plastic case incorporating a carry handle, with the lead and hose stowed within the case.
  • 2002 VW Golf 1.9 TDI - help! 23 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I'm thinking that rather than selling it and buying a brand new car, I'll probably keep it for the duration of its life. What do you guys think? Do Golf diesels run on for a while? Will the mileage go into the 100s without any problems? Ok, I know this is an impossible question to answer but do any of you have any experience of Golf diesels? I don't want to make the decision and then find that I'm spending thousands on repairs, etc.
  • Punto 1.2 8 valve overheating? 10 Apr 2007 (Forum)
During the past 2 weeks, the radiator cooling fan has stayed on for about 10 seconds after most journeys, even after a 1 mile trip to the shops (1 hour after a 12 mile run) I've checked the water level, it's between the min & max marks, no signs of water loss. This is the first time I've noticed the fan staying on in 4 years. Is this normal or is it a sign of impending problems?
  • Need help with car choice... 4 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Hi Guys, I need a med/large family car with a budget of £3500-£4000 Priorities are - reliability, fuel economy, Comfort. My shortlist with my concerns is: Honda accord - Running costs too high? Vectra (02-05) - Reliability/build quality? Mondeo - Reliability? Toyota Avensis - Dull to drive? If i went for the mondeo or Vectra, what are the chances of it reaching its 10th birthday without picking up large repair bills, ie Clutch/suspension.

I still have the same fault - can anyone please please offer any pointers as to what else could be wrong. The car seems to run ok but I am loathe to drive it without knowing what the problem is. TIA /Simon
