I have the above car (2004, about 40K miles) with "Check Emissions" showing. Fault code scanner reports P2413 "Exhaust Gas Recirculation System Performance" Reading about lots of problems with EGR valves on Renaults I decided that must be the problem - so I changed the valve. I still have the same fault - can anyone please please offer any pointers as to what else could be wrong. The car seems to run ok but I am loathe to drive it without knowing what the problem is.
TIA

HI i know this sounds dum but have you had it on co2 carbonmonoxide check some times this can help with a diagnosis
|
Hi, thanks for the suggestion, no I haven't had any kind of gas tests run, I'm not sure that would help too much? There must some other kind of sensor/actuator on the car somewhere - but I don't know what. I have reset/cleared the ECU several times but the fault stays - the MIL light doesn't even go off for a second. /Simon

These engines are far too complex for poking around. It needs to go to the dealer (or good diesel specialist) and have the codes read.
|
I thought the whole idea of OBD-II was that proprietary equipment was -not- required to read the codes - especially anything to do with emissions? The only code I can see in the ECU is the P2413
|
I'm not sure on this engine, it must be the 1.5 if it's 80bhp. Isn't it under warranty?
|
Well assuming it's a three year warranty, which I think it is, then I'm just out of luck. Isn't that always the way?

OBD-II is a system fitted to American market vehicles. Avoid anything that mentions it in their advertising to UK buyers; they're con-men deliberately trying to pull the wool.
EOBD is the system fitted to Euro-market cars and it isn't obligatory on diesels of that year. Proper scantools produce text codes on these; that P-code is a manufacturer-specific code, that probably does exist, but is not listed in any of the normal data books.
|
Thanks for pointing that out. So P2413 is a Renault specific code? How can I find out what it means?
|
Have you had the ECU memory reset since you fixed it? it could be showing the old error.

I reset it myself - using ScanTool.net - mind you, this only claims to be an OBD-II tool, not EOBD. so perhaps it's not working? The resetting worked fine for me on a different problem I had on a petrol Mercedes.

P2413 = EGR performance problem. Probable causes are blocked/leaking hoses, EGR solenoid fault or EGR valve fault.
|
Are you sure that is for Renault? I found it on google, but it was for a Vauxhall - as far as I can tell there is no EGR solenoid - only a valve. I have replaced that (at enormous expense). So that leaves either a wiring fault or blocked pipes somewhere I guess.
|
Are you sure that is for Renault?
According to AutoData it is.

If that is a true code, then it's Renault specific. Renault themselves use a different format on their own diagnostic machines; so cross-referencing it could be tricky. I can't even find Renault on Troublecodes.net
Maybe getting the real codes read by an independent is the best way to go. You wouldn't be the first sent astray by Chinese code-readers.

Hmmm that sounds like a good idea. My local friendly garage has a Tecnotest Reflex 3130 that might do the trick - or it would if I hadn't broken it for him. I said I would look into updating it, and so far all I have managed to do is make it worse. It looks like I've got to send it back to Italy to get its "RTC corrupt" fault fixed.
|
Simon
Yes a Reflex would be able to get a fault-description out of it - if it was working.
[Only send it back to Italy as a last resort. Scanners can disappear for months, or even years, when sent back there.]
Can't you get a new OP for it from one of the dealers over here and reboot it?
|
Unfortunately none of the dealers I have talked to so far have been able to help - Tecnotest themselves say it has to go back to them. Of course they are very protective of how to reset the RTC (real time clock I presume), because that's how the unit knows what date it is, and therefore whether you are allowed to use it or not. The whole subscription thing seems a complete rip off to me, especially when it cost over three grand to buy.
|
Simon
Ahh; I'd forgotten that a Reflex is time-bombed. I wouldn't buy anything that was on principle.
For the same money he could now have got a top-line scanner like a Marelli Unicheck - whatta mistaka to maka...
|
Yes, the time bomb is a pain, and a rip-off IMHO. Is there anyway the unit can be changed to a perpetual license if you don't need all the updates?
|
Simon
I'm sure it's possible; but I've no personal experience of trying.
Most of the time-bombed equipment and data-software manufacturers go to quite extreme lengths to stop unauthorized "extensions," so be prepared for some nasty traps.
There's a lot of money involved; so it's in a different league to the PC stuff.
|
Thanks for the help so far. Is there a decent system out there (perhaps PC based), that can read most of the codes (Engine+ABS+Airbag) that is within reach of the one man band garage, or keen enthusiast such as myself? The low cost ELM based ones only seem to be able to do engine codes.

Not really a level of equipment that I take much interest in. There are loads of conflicting claims by all sorts of sellers; but as to whether any are true.... Maybe a S/H Sykes ACR off e-bay and get the maker's pods as reqd?
Diagnostics is a fearsomely expensive business to be caught up in. Equipment is virtually out of date before you even get it. Frankly; I don't see the point of either getting into it - or staying in it.
|
HI i have just had the same probs to find somthing my self and last night got a sykes and pickavant ARC of ebay about £380 and the pods will do ABS and AIR BAGS and renault the new one just out is the V5 witch will do the 96 97 the one that renault used was XR25 there own stuff i have been told from a old mate a renault that snap on clip will do them to hope this helps

Pardon?
Please use full stops - it makes the task of reading what has been typed much easier.
|
sorry! was that not up to your standard. some times i forget to put the full stops in because i am a bit dyslexic
|
I wasn't being funny. I had to read your reply several times before it made any form of sense and one or two spelling mistakes didn't help [again not being critical just pointing it out].
No offense meant.
