  • Diesel fuel filters, changed too often? 7 Jan 2016 (Forum)
Funny what you develop an interest in ;=) But I last did this about 12 years ago with a Prima in a Maestro and the result was the same. But has anyone seen a Derv filter run up to an extended mileage without being touched? I actually felt I had gained nothing from the change and that I might as well have left it alone. This one was 50% past its specified change interval based on the empirical evidence of the last 15 years servicing the family diesels.
  • Volkswagen Golf Mk6 1.4TSI Match DSG - 7 speed VW DSG downshift jerks 23 Nov 2015 (Forum)
I'm wondering if the work to refit the dual clutch could have damaged something? I'm advised that the car is still running synthetic oil as per UK policy and I don't believe that there's any later software updates available. I plan to keep the pressure on the VW dealer who has been reasonable to date. Has any one got any suggestions for a DSG cure?
  • Ford Focus - Poor Dealer Service 26 Sep 2015 (Forum)
Having a run in with Ford over very poor service. I have had the car from very nearly new (2800 miles and 4 months old). It has had 3 dealer services at 12500 mls, 25000mls and 37500 mls. On at least 2 of these services, I have pointed out that the car squats oddly on a hill start, and that I suspect the handbrake is not set up correctly.
  • Honda Jazz 2007 1.4 DSI SE - Honda Jazz Engine Rattle On Acceleration / Revving 22 Sep 2015 (Forum)
Almost sounds similar to the timing belt rattle I had on the Corsa (but not as loud). Its different to the ticking sound the engine has anyway, hard to hear it when the car is running as the other engine / road noises drown it out, but when parked up it seems noticeable. Strange thing is its not a constant noise, I heard it when parked up, with my window down - decided to drive to my mechanic to book car in, and tried to get the noise back outside the mechanics and it was purring like a kitten.
  • Fiesta Ghia 1.4 Durashift - Strange one - radiator blocked??? 10 Sep 2015 (Forum)
But I can't find a cold spot on the rad, it drains out of the drain plug and out of the bottom hose, and I can put water in the expansion tank or the top pipe and and comes out both the drain plug and the bottom hose. I want to sell the car and whilst it runs fine I can't sell it with a bubbling steaming expansion tank. Any bright ideas, please? On another note, the rear n/side brake bulb does not work. I've had the fitting out, checked everything is fine, which it is, put the bulb in outside the car and it works in the fitting when plugged into the loom, but as soon as I put it all back together it stops working. The other two brake lights work fine.
  • Vauxhall Astra G Petrol - 2003 Vauxhall Astra Cutting Out 9 Sep 2015 (Forum)
However, if you need to stop or press the clutch in, the engine will not idle and it will stall. After a couple of minutes the engine will start up again and will run and idle fine. The problem will then repeat in another 30 mins time!! The car has been seen by two local garages who are unable to find the fault (both cleaned the throttle body with no improvement), I have also taken it to Vauxhall who said that no fault codes were being displayed - and they also cleaned the throttle body!!
  • Which car makers do / don't offer a spare wheel? 7 Aug 2015 (Forum)
Most VWs I think - spacesaver as standard. Mini - the Roadster has it as an option: I think run-flats are also an option. Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV- spacesaver standard according to the info on this site although when i had a test drive neither the salesman nor I could find it. Mazda CX-3 - no provision that I could see and the salesman wasn't sure.
  • Tyres 27 Jul 2015 (Forum)
Well, a few tyre prices for my car (prices per tyre) : Blackcircles 'value' : £69.10 Blackcircles 'quality' : £78.60 Kumho : £111.22 Toyo : £117.80 Uniroyal : £128.69 Falken : £131.58 Pirelli : £133.60 (what the car has had from new) Hankook : £136.15 Goodyear, Dunlop, Continental, Michelin : £141 to £149 Bridgestone : £196.56 Yokohama : £207.96 So the Pirelli are one of the cheapest 'premium' brands available, and are what the car has been running on since new. Car has covered 25,000 miles, and the rear tyres are on 4mm. Front tyres are about 6mm. (RWD car) So, buying 'premium' brands like Pirelli doesn't seem to be as expensive as some people reckon.
  • Citroen Berlingo, Drive the Deal, Carwow - Problems with online brokers 15 Jul 2015 (Forum)
I settled on an updated Citroen Berlingo Multispace with the Family Pack as it is cheap to buy, cheap to run and has sliding doors which are easier for ageing parents to use. In June I saw an offer on the HJ website from Drive the Deal for the exact car I wanted at £10495 so I placed an order.
  • Which car to go for? 8 Jul 2015 (Forum)
We are a family of four (1 and 5 year old) and will be living near Gloucester but travelling to London at least once a fortnight. The car will also be used for the school run and commute. We have been driving a XC90, which we bought new and loved, but won't be bringing back to the UK. We can't decide which car to go for and whether to buy new or used. We are likely to be in the UK for 2-4 years before being posted overseas again.
  • Ford Focus 1.8 tdci 2006 - Annoying and concerning idle 26 Jun 2015 (Forum)
I have took the car back and the garage say they don't notice anything alarming but what I describe sounds like a misfire, they took it in a ten Mile run and claims nothing appears to be wrong. I am reading on forums some slightly similar problems I am hearing egr valve , injectors and thrust bearing the most but I don't or possibly won't believe does anybody recommend a good avenue I could go down in diagnosing the fault if anybody has any suggestions or opinions I would much appreciate your thought s thanks.
  • mercedes sprinter cdi - broken engine ?? 17 Jun 2015 (Forum)
7cm diameter, one plastic cap, raised a bit in the middle 5cm diameter, with 8 small slits in the vertical sides if you lay it flat. metal circular ring 4cm diameter, 1 1/2 high with looks like bearing-racer track inside & 6 bearings about 1/2cm across !! The engine still starts &runs (though I'm not using it) strangely! What can they be? Very vague shot in the dark I know! Thank you
  • Jaguar XF - Review - 3.0D 22 May 2015 (Forum)
I can honestly say that it was by far the best car. After almost 3 weeks the engine has been run in and I'm now starting to explore the capabilities of the engine and gearbox.  Wow is all I can say... For a 3 litre engine I am averaging 36.3 MPG over 2,400 miles with one journey showing an average of 51.4 MPG (all figures from the onboard computer).
  • Renault Clio II 1999 - Renault Clio 1.2 8v mk2 Non Starter No Coil Volts 21 May 2015 (Forum)
I turned the car on and off several times ok, but in the morning tried again and no start. Doing the battery disconnect and radio code made no difference. It has not run since. Sorry for long intro, but its been that sort of job and internet search seems to be bogged down with immobiliser lights flashing or no fuel. Any ideas on where to try next?
  • Mercedes 350Sl 2003 (R230) - Mercedes Command 2.0 Sat Nav 3 May 2015 (Forum)
Half an hour later additional warming lights for ABS, Brakes etc… came on and the powered steering stopped. Obviously the Alternator was not assisting the electrical power required to run the vehicle.   I had a new Alternator fitted, and the warning notifications cancelled.
  • madza 6 2011 - Sumpstrainer failure, 19 Mar 2015 (Forum)
How would i find out if other owners, particularly in Ireland, experienced this problem. I would also like to point out , if my car was in excellent running order, I could have sold for 16,450euros.  Is it your opinion to engage an independent assessor , costing me 450 plus vat to write out report to ensure my case is stronger.  I will also have to get car towed to Madza mechanics to allow them to look at this car , more costs.
  • Vauxhall Signum 2.2 DTi - Vauxhall Signum Gearbox Limp Mode 13 Feb 2015 (Forum)
I am about to strip out the ERG and give it a good clean, try and clean the turbo and MAF but I am running out of idea's. The invalid data from TCM sounds ominous, but not entirely sure what that means. Any help or advice would be much appreciated. Thanks Dougie
  • Volkswagen Polo III 2001 1.4 Petrol 8v - Brake pad and disc confusion 1 Feb 2015 (Forum)
From the caliper code (216214) is it possible for anyone on here to tell me which pads I need? I know that I could take the pads out and run down to my local motor factors or measure them and look online but I would prefer to buy the parts first and have them to hand when doing the job.
  • Kia Ceed - Seeking advise on used car purchase 30 Jan 2015 (Forum)
There's no shortage of diesel engines options out there, I'm wondering if it's worth considering a higher mileage diesel (2010 age) and accept that servicing will be higher but running costs will be lower. Any advice, would be very much welcomed.
  • Forte ENGINE flush & Gas Treatment 14 Jan 2015 (Forum)
If there is a recommened way to use this product can anyone please advice... or just put in the stuff and run for 35 mins fast idle and then drain and do normal oil change...? I also have seen a mechanic use the gas treatment, but he used to bottles of it and the tank was already on its reserve, started it up and revved the guts out of the car, loads of white smoke came out, apprantly it cleaned the engine very well, is this true, or was too much forte used and is that bad for the car?
