  • What would you buy? 30 Nov 2008 (Forum)
So assuming that I have a budget of £15,000, what would you buy bearing in mind the following aspects: - I drive 9,000 miles each year in mostly suburban Manchester; I would prefer an automatic; I need four doors and seat four people in comfort; I demand air-con, electric and heated mirrors, electric windows and remote central locking. I would like Bluetooth or equivalent built in; Comfortable ride and excellent driving position, with easy access; All these are easy.
  • Porsche Boxster - under 10k, 106k miles 27 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Spoke to the chap who took me for a drive in it, and garnered the folling info: * Full Porsche SH (I verified) with approx 10k spent on the car in 10 years (!) * Price was 10250 but he said he'd take 9800 * Tyres are all down to about 2-3mm * No air-con * Seats seemed to be part-leather * Condition in & out seemed to be very good, a few very minor scuffs on alloys only Two things concerned me though - 1 - I put the roof up and down a few times with no probs but 1 time I stopped half way & when I resumed, a bit of trim popped out (which he clipped back in, explaining that if you stopped the roof mechanism halfway through, it would pop out) 2 - 1 dash light didn't go out - for the rear spoiler, although web research shows that it may be possible to switch off using a switch by driver's left knee that activates the spoiler Obviously I'm masively tempted with this, as I can sell my golf gti, and just add about 2-3k so the question is, with that many miles on, if it has been properly serviced it's whole life, is there a reasonable chance of it being good for another 30k miles in the next 2 years & stil be worth something at the end?
  • Hyundai and Kia 30 Dec 2006 (Forum)
The handling's also pretty good, and the clutch is feather-light, gearchange is effortless. The interior isn't cheap, and toys like air-con come as standard. Needless to say she's put her deposit down and we're picking up a 56-reg pre-registered one on Thursday at a very competitive price. The question is simple - why won't more people venture down to their local Kia dealer?
  • Fiat Stilos - The quickest review ever 8 Jun 2006 (Forum)
The kit on them puts Fords and Vauxhalls to shame. I think it's only the one up from base spec and has; Adjustable rear seats, computer, air con, reverse parking sensors, central locking, alarm, auto lights, traction control, ABS and more to boot. All on a 1.6! Car seemed solid enough and was quite cool in the gadget department. Whenever a door was open, instead of a boring light to warn you (yawn!)
  • Audi 80 Cabriolet 2.6e - A few problems! 28 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Again, all the fuses are intact. 4)The steering wheel is not quite straight when going straight ahead - about 5 degrees off. Is this just a simple wheel alignment? 5) Finally the when you press the Air Con button the compressor pulley doesn't begin to turn as it should - it is too cold to feel if it's working. Is there a cut out on the system for low temperatures to prevent freezing up? This may be the problem...
  • BMW 318 E46 Coolant System Troubles 18 Oct 2003 (Forum)
The car has been regularly maintained but I have been disappointed by the minor (windscreen wiper relay, heater relay, air con sensor) and major (cooling system failures) problems I have had with it and also the fact that it is quite an oil burner (as all the BMW garages I've been to have told me its designed to do). Its not really what I expected from a BMW.
  • Mk4 Golf - not that good? 10 Feb 2002 (Forum)
I know two people who have Mk4 Golfs, a 1.8 GTi and a 1.9TDi (the 110bhp) and they've both had problems for stupid quality issues that really shouldn't crop up on a 17 grand plus car. Electric windows falling out of their mountings, air con leaks, problems with hi-fi equipment, electrical gremlins and so on, nothing serious, but I got so used to seeing a courtesy car outside one friends house I wondered if she shouldn't have just bought a 1.0 Polo to start with.....
  • Toyota Prius not rubbish to drive shock! 30 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Time to take stock of the interior. There is a digital speedo, lots of idiot lights, including one that tells you when the air-con is switched on and one that says ?Ready? for no apparent reason. A large touch sensitive screen dominates the middle of the dashboard and controls pretty much all of the minor functions such as air-con and stereo, sort of like a miniature i-Drive, and there appear to be no controls instantly recognisable from other cars.
  • Toyota Voxy - Toyota Misfire And White Smoke On Cold Starting 30 Aug 2019 (Forum)
4/ The engine gets really hot real quick and the fan keeps coming on very frequently but I think this might be due to some air blockage in the cooling system or some leak in the radiator. 5/ The oil dipstick kind of smells of petrol.
  • Used car never ending faults 22 Jul 2019 (Forum)
Again I’ve questioned this. An update was made but it’s no different. The garage say it’s fine. Latest fault is the air con, a new blender was fitted but didn’t cure. Now a new heater box is being fitted and that means dashboard out. I certainly have no confidence that this will be the final fix as with the roof I’m expecting creaks and rattles ( I’ve questioned rejecting the car to my local dealer but I bought it from another approved dealer and am now using my local jaguar dealership.
  • multi - car insurance 5 Apr 2018 (Forum)
It's not worth selling the older car ( Shogun Pinin 3 door Auto on a W ) as the published value is about two grand and i've spent half that in the last year - new cam belt kit, air con recharge , tyres and a full service, so basically I might get offered £1500 or so for it - it's worth more as a back - up car, being totally reliable. Am sure others are in the same boat ? Any tips on how to best insure ?
  • 54 Focus 1.8i - What SUV to replace a great car to drive? 22 May 2017 (Forum)
Being old school i actually like a car that drives well and has a manual box, we also prefer an opening sunroof over air con but that seems to be a big ask these days.  We have test driven the CR-V, Qashqui, CX3, ASX, C-HR, X1, Tiguan, GLA, Tuscon, Q3 and have either found them poor to drive, or constantly jittery, or not enough passenger legroom in front or passenger seat won't raise, or not very high or very poor internal trim for the money being asked.
  • Any. - Reasonably priced reliable commuter vehicle. 9 Aug 2014 (Forum)
In addition each of my diesel cars have had major breakdowns (diesel related) that have cost a fortune to put right. ( negating any fuel saving and more) My wife has a fiesta ecoboost that is fantastic and I can manage 50-55 mpg on my commute but will cost more than I'm willing to spend. My main requirements are a car under 4 years old that has 5 doors, air con, ESP, a full array of airbags and a reasonable boot. This car will suffer dents etc due to parking arrangements in loading bays so looks not too important. It needs to be more comfortable than the Auris (can't be hard) and return 45 mpg at least.
  • Mazda 6 - Idling and low rev torubles 18 Jun 2013 (Forum)
I have also read that the injectors should be calibrated at each service (12.5k miles) As it hasn't had Mazda services, I wonder if it has never been calibrated and maybe this is the issue. So, this is what the car does now. Idle is a little rough. If I turn on the Air Con at idle it goes really rough and sometimes stalls (more so when warm). When driving, pull is very weak up to approx 1700rpm (ie going round corners in second gear is sometimes an issue at low revs, feels like it is going to stall and have to give it some throttle) Before I go and get ripped of by a Mazda service technician, I wonder if it is possible to do an injector calibration myself?
  • Citroen Xsara Picasso - Consider buying or walk away? 17 May 2013 (Forum)
There are various causes ranging from water getting in through door seals or something to do with the air con dripping out water.  The owner is likely to drop the price again due to this so we would be getting the car for much less than the going rate.  And IF the water problem is easily fixed we could be getting everything we want at a very good price.
  • MINI Cooper - MPG on a Mini Cooper 16 Dec 2011 (Forum)
I also make use of the start-stop in traffic, change up in line with the shift indicator and I don't run the air con or use the cruise control much. I wouldn't say I'm a particularly heavy footed driver. My view is that as the sales contract is one of Utmost Good Faith, the dealer and/or manufacturer failed to disclose something to me that was instrumental in choosing the car that they would have known about.
  • Ford Galaxy (1995 - 2006) - 2002 1.9tdi Turbo goes into limp mode 3 Feb 2011 (Forum)
On return to me, the fault does not happen as often but it's still there, and it's a dangerous fault to have especially when overtaking!, the last time it happened i only turned the air con. on and the car went straight into limp mode, pulled up switched off and back on again fault cleared, yes VW Sharran rubbish, garrett turbo i think, are these garages missing the obvious!, surely turbo faults at less than 20k are not right.
  • VW Golf 2001 se TDI Auto - Should I sell My VW GOLF 24 Sep 2010 (Forum)
Condition good but it will need a new cambelt next year, and full service . It is due now for lubrication service and also air con service. The cellulose  is peeling in places on the paint finish. It will also need new tyres next year.Warranty for next year £350 So about  £1700 expenditure in next 12 months.
  • Volvo Audi - 2 Ltr petrol non Turbo options plus VAG 1.9TDI 11 Jan 2023 (Forum)
I have decided to keep to a very strict budget to avoid the fun of car finance and I do like owning cars outright. These are all double the price of the UK but we don't have the salting so much and the air is much dryer generally! All cars subject to all electronics especially the air con working of course. The 3 hour round trip to the office has made me thing to stick to normal cars as it would be much more calm and comfortable driving.
  • 2008 Volkswagen Polo 1.4 SE - Engine judder when at idle 5 Aug 2013 (Forum)
Took to my local garage, agreed that fuel injector number 3 was the problem. Replaced and also full set of spark plugs done. No other problems noted. I had my air filter changed as it has always been a little smelly when putting the air con on. Got it back yesterday. It's running better but still juddery a little at idle but nowhere near as bad as before.
