  • Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - 00 1.3 a noisy PAS problem 21 Apr 2009 (Forum)
just recently had a new powered steering hose and other long pipe fitted (not to sure of the name of that, was really expensive though as could only get it from fords). since this has been done i have had a strange noise which starts when the car is started and continues to become louder when accelerating in lower gears (after say 3rd gear the noise of the engine seems to drown out the noise), when on full lock noise becomes very loud. i have been told it may be the powered steering pump as before the new hose was fitted i was running very low on fluid and have been told i have probably ruined the pump due to this. does this sound right to anyone?? i have just recently found a small leak of what looks like powered steering fluid, could this be coming from the pump or has the hose or pipe not been fitted properly?
  • Citroen C5 (2001 - 2008) - 02 2.2 HDi diesel starting problems 8 Apr 2009 (Forum)
It appears that it is probably a fuel suply fault whilst the motor is cranking. Once it has started, it runs very nicely indeed. Any thoughts or advice would be greatly welcomed. Cheers, Mike
  • Volkswagen Golf II (1983 - 1992) - 1991 1.6 - coughing & spluttering 31 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Since about 6 months ago it has been choking and stalling first thing in the morning, only settling down after a couple of miles. It also runs on for a few seconds after ignition switch-off, and although it has always done this, it seems to have got worse over the same 6-month period. My Haynes manual gives 4 possible causes so I'm interested to know if anyone has any preferences as to likely cause.
  • Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - 02 2.0 HDI 110 - Strange cylinder compression read 26 Mar 2009 (Forum)
The compression difference of 3 bar is 45psi which is significant but unexplainable. I don't know what else they did to the car but the engine is running noticeably stronger today. I'm going to suck it and see. One suggestion was renozzling the injectors - cost approx £90 a go. With no guarantee that will make any difference. Anyone got an idea as to the root cause?
  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 93 1.1 petrol Black exhaust smoke, juddery engine 20 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Today it's been the same, and I saw that there's black smoke that leaves an oily residue on the ground, and the engine management light comes on if it idles for too long. It's not running smoothly and I'm very concerned about it. My mum drove behind me for a while and said there's a bad smell coming from the car as well as the smoke. She thinks it might be something wrong with the cylinder head gasket.
  • Vauxhall Astra F (1991 - 1998) - 94 1.7td Anyone used cylinder head/block sealant?. 11 Mar 2009 (Forum)
So, has anyone used any sealant which is available, and if so had any success with it. I might well try it before taking the head off, and although the engine otherwise runs perfectly fine with no signs of overheating. I'm a bit concerned about what I might find on an engine that's done 212,000 miles, even though it loses no oil at all, and a 14 year old car that isn't worth anything now.
  • Tyre roar, cars worse than trucks? 4 Mar 2009 (Forum)
Obviously there is a speed difference, the trucks would be travelling 50 to 55 mph and the cars anything up to 90ish i suppose. But considering most of the trucks were running the equivalent of 20 tyres (most trailers are now super single's, double width tubeless trailer tyres), i was quite surprised. The road surface at that section is good smooth tarmac, would have maybe been a different story nearer Stoke on the concrete.
  • Another bus lane incident. 26 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Walked down to the garage this morning and picked up the Suzi V after a cam belt change. Past the garage runs a bus lane, but only in the direction I wanted to go so pulled off forecourt, crossed the bus lane and turned left into the car lane. It was in prohibited hours. Fair enough, no problem. 50 yards up there was a private coach, the type with the big 'sticky out ears' ( mirrors ) parked on the opposite side of the road..
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 1.8 misfire after start up 15 Feb 2009 (Forum)
Pattern of usage changed about 1 year ago and car now gets a few journeys per week of approx. 10 miles and the occasional longer run. It's quite possible that my garage has never seen exactly this before - but quite likely that someone else out there has had this problem.
  • Police attitude - Motorway Cops 31 Jan 2009 (Forum)
They flick the lights on and as he pulls onto the hard shoulder they pull in front and stamp the brakes on. He nearly goes into the back of them. Before the car's stopped the policeman's out and running over to the car, reaches in and pulls out the keys and then tries to pull the driver out while screaming "You're under arrest" etc. Driver somewhat surprised by this, gives the policeman a shove back.
  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - 99 2.5 misfire problems 21 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I have a Mondeo ST24 2.5 V6, I moved the car off the drive one day and all was fine, got up the following day and the car wouldnt run, i have a Scanguage so I used that and it threw up P0353 error which is Ignition Coil "C" Primary/Secondary Circuit Malfunction, I replaced the coil with a brand new genuine Ford part, also changed the leads and plugs whilst the UIM was off.
  • Nissan Terrano II (1993 - 2005) - 1998 2.7 Black smoke 10 Jan 2009 (Forum)
One garaged has suggested that the pre combustion chambers could be damaged as the turbo was recently replaced and apprently when the turbo goes you can essentially end up with excess fuel as the engine starts running on its own oil as well but I can find no metion of the pre combustion chambers after a quick flick through a workshop manual. Another garage has said that the exhaust was getting very hot and could possibly be partially blocked causing the smoke but I have yet to investigate this.
  • Car stood over Yuletide, will it start? 8 Jan 2009 (Forum)
I'll be starting up at about 4.30am Monday, so i don't want to hear the ominous sounds of slowly turning engine followed by the heart stopping sounds of clicking starter. (i've also popped in to work and run up the truck engine for half an hour, not a hope that it would start otherwise) As an aside i had to change the battery a few weeks ago, now i always buy good quality things if possible and the battery was no exception, but the new one i bought 14 or so months previously just died without warning.
  • Vauxhall Astra H estate (2004 - 2009) - Some advice regarding governing of vehicles 5 Jan 2009 (Forum)
A friend of mine asked a question to me that I have no idea of answering so I thought I would ask on here to see what options are available to him. He runs a private hire company with about 50 drivers and 25 cars most are Vauxhall astra 1.7 tdi?s, now with the economic down turn he wants to reduce his costs and one of his biggest costs is fuel (even with the price going down) as he hires his vehicles out to drivers he knows most don?
  • Speed Choice Workshop - £30 "Administration Fee" 3 Jan 2009 (Forum)
At the time of stating this option, you do not have a choice in the date of the workshop, only to put down the dates you are unavailable in the next 120 days. Unfortunately due to running a business and other things cropping up, the date they have chosen is right on a date I am no longer available. I cannot even free up this date for various reasons either. In order to quote: "request for an Alternative Workshop Appointment", you need to pay a £30 "non-refundable administration fee".
  • Renault Clio II (1998 - 2001) - 1998 1.2 Intermittent Starting 27 Nov 2008 (Forum)
As the engine in my car is only 8 valve with a distribuitor-less ignition system i dont know if these parts would cause the same faults. When the engine is running it has plenty of power, no signs of fuels starvation or missfiring. I have also heard of problems with the immobilliser unit, i found this on the car, situated next to the interior light. The immobillisecircuit board did look corroded, however the engine started even when i unplugged the immobliser circuit board, so obviously my immobilliser seems to have no use.
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 98 1.3 Heating prob ... ... 24 Nov 2008 (Forum)
My heaters in the car don't seem to work proper, they blow cold air 95% of the time. And once in a blue moon they give me some (little) heat for 20mins max when the car has run for 10-15 mins. The cabin never gets warm... I thought it was the heater control valve that everyone seems to have had problems with but then again I do get periodic heat from it... could this still be defective.
  • Buying a new car is nightmare 24 Nov 2008 (Forum)
SWMBO X reg Yaris 1.3SR is now due for renewal - so I spent this last week looking around and being a long term Mazda man - we ( I ) decided on Mazda 3 auto - ran down autotrader etc and gleaned prices of 06-07 -08 cars and prices - fine -- today we went to local Ford/Mazda dealer to look and in showroom was a unregistered 1.4 Fiesta Ghia petrol on offer for £9999 (pre facelift)- £3k off list (Yea) this car has everything but auto and heated seats but doing the sums it seems more practical to go for manual than auto and it's cheaper to run than Mazda. Not being a Ford man what are the 1.4 engines like for reliability in fact what is the whole car like to own -- We only cover about 7k miles a year so diesel really doesn't make economic sense unless I could get one for same price - I asked and salesman said no diesels left -- As a cash buyer with no partX would I be able to bargain on price that is asked - I know it can't hurt to ask but realistically would a main Ford dealer move on sticker price. - if I wait till next weekend would the salesmen be jumping.
  • Toyota RAV 4 (2000 - 2006) - Deal or no deal? 20 Nov 2008 (Forum)
My finances allow me to puchase it without borrowing, something I would never do anyway!. My own dearly loved immaculate Mazda 626 I could probably sell privately, and running costs should be comparable. I have 24 hours to decide before she p/exs it at the LR dealer, and before anyone suggests it, she will not be swayed from a Defender! Opinions please on whether to go for it....
  • SEAT Toledo II (1999 - 2004) - 01 1.9tdi Water pump? 19 Nov 2008 (Forum)
My sons 110hp Toledo has started to play up a little. It seems after about 15 minutes running that the temperature starts to rise and the heater goes cold. He grabbed a thermostat today to exclude that, and as we speak he is trying to find where the thing goes. I have a sneaky feeling that the water pump may be playing up, i wonder if this could be one of the plastic impeller jobbies.
