  • Ford Mondeo II (1996 - 2000) - Bust aircon - likely cost? 14 Sep 2009 (Forum)
However, the aircon gas is leaking. The current owner had it regassed, but within three weeks air was no longer running cold, therefore he suspects a leak rather than a compressor failure or the like. I do really like my aircon and don't want a car without it. Does anyone have any idea what a worst case ball park figure might be for fixing this?
  • Buying 2ndhand from authorized dealer? 29 Aug 2009 (Forum)
They say they have just given the vehicle a full 40k service, issued a new mot and it has 6 mths tax to run. Mileage is 10k under the average for a 5 yr old car and I am told it is in excellent condition. Two previous owners, full service history, they sold it to last owner, who has sold it back to them.
  • Extending warranty on new car at point of sale 24 Aug 2009 (Forum)
I am aware that there are quite a few after-market warranties available which I could look to buy later when the manufacturer's warranty is about to run out. I would appreciate your views on whether I am better off: (1) waiting for just under 2 years, after which I will have a better idea of how reliable the car is and whether extending the warranty is a good idea; or (2) buying the Motorpoint warranty now, taking advantage of the "special rates" available only when purchasing a new car.
  • Cycling nippers pulled 5 Aug 2009 (Forum)
It was coming from the mouth of a boy perhaps two years older, with a music device and an earphone in his ear, cycling up my main road with the first boy sitting on the handlebars of a bike that looked a bit small for either of them. He seemed to be giving the first boy an earful about running away from him. At the corner of my block, both boys, and another who had appeared out of nowhere, had been pulled by four or five uniformed plod of both genders, who had got out of a marked VW people carrier.
  • Anyone who has done any "Driving Experiences"? 3 Aug 2009 (Forum)
Hi everyone, first post on the forums despite using the site so I hope no one has me down as a spammer despite my first post being a "request" Just as a start, I do love my cars and drive an imported Honda Integra DC5 (going to do a search in a minute to see if there is any posts on these) :) Anyway, one of the reasons I've been prompted to post is a slight request for anyone who has done any driving experiences that you can buy, such as Ferrari or other supercars, tank driving etc. I run a site and I want peoples reviews on driving experiences they have done in the past. I will send some sort of freebie as a thankyou for anyone who does do a review for the site If anyone has done a driving experience that they have enjoyed and wouldn't mind doing me a write up then drop me a PM or reply on here as I can't seem to spot an inbox on this forum at the moment :) As I said, I hope this post doesn't get frowned on too much, I know it's not particularly good form to start posting on a forum asking for help without getting integrated in the forum first and I hope I'm not sent to the naughty corner...
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 01 1.9 wont start - intermittently!!! 27 Jul 2009 (Forum)
sometimes (maybe the 3rd or 10th time) the starter turns, and the car starts straight away (it doesnt hesitate to start, the starter doesnt have to run for any longer than usual) When this happened, i rolled it down the hill in second gear with the clutch down, with the key ignition turned on (2nd position), and tried to bump start it. That didnt work either!!!
  • FIAT Punto II (1999 - 2006) - 02 1.2 overheating - no water circulation 24 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Symptoms are: * engine boiled and lost some water, but only through the over pressure vent in the cap as far as I can tell * plenty of water remained in the system - above max in fact due to expansion * high pressure remained in the system * bottom radaitor pipe and radiator itself seemed too cool by touch, indicating no circulation * no heat from cabin heater, which I believe means it's not a stuck thermostat as the cabin circuit bypasses the thermostat on engines I know * radiator in good condition * fan was running including key off but not for that long I believe the water pump is driven by the cam belt, so the pulley must be turning as the car still drives! Did the impeller detatch from the pump? It seems an unlikely failure.
  • MPG - How much is your banger costing you? 20 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Just some spent some time working out some statistics my dads car currently does 30mpg and he does 12,000 miles a year in his dying Fiesta I have worked out that he spends nearly £1800 a year on fuel. I've done the stats for my Corsa and I am getting 42mpg which is calculated from a pure city run sample. I do like to rev it a bit but I do avoid braking and drive very smoothly which is why I am probably getting a good MPG rate. My dad also drives smoothly but gets 12mpg less (his engine has lots of problems).
  • Peugeot 206 hatchback (1998 - 2006) - 01 2.0 HDI Turbo mystery 3 Jul 2009 (Forum)
My 206 HDi is confusing me to no end. It will start perfectly when cold and I can run around in it like a normal car. However I park up and cannot restart the car, once the engine is hot. I got a fuel pressure regulator fault so I have changed the fuel filter and housing and the High pressure fuel pump in the engine bay.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B (1995 - 1999) - 99 1.8 oil use/loss 29 Jun 2009 (Forum)
When I changed the oil shortly after purchasing the car a few months ago,I noticed that the old filter was squashed down on one side,as if it had not seated properly. The new one appeared to fit well, but I have not checked it since, but have wondered if there is a pressure release which operates in the filter housing which could vent out oil when running along? Is there a crankcase breather? Is there a crankcase pressure release? Any suggestions would be welcome. The car has only done 81k. Thanks.
  • Should I 'give up' on Company car 12 Jun 2009 (Forum)
The principle is that my employer increases my salary (I am a basic rate tax payer) by the same amount as the current cost to them of the contract hire, fuel, insurance etc, so they are no worse off. I run my own car and can then also claim the mileage against income tax which friends have worked out would be about £9000 a yr. based on my 30,000 buisness miles p.a. I know I have to do this at the end of the tax year by claim.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 03 1.6 Recurring engine warning light 11 Jun 2009 (Forum)
These were replaced (on fords recomendation) separately but on each occasion the warning light again came on again after about 50 miles. The light is again on now, the error code is the same as on previous occasions but we are running out of options and parts to replace. The following info came from my memoscan Fault Code - P04020 Generic Catalyst efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) Freeze Frame info trouble code - P0420 Fuel SYS1 CL, faulty HO2S Fuel SYS2 CL, faulty HO2S calc laod 56% coolant 112 deg C ST FTRM 1 -3.1 LT FTRM 1 -6.2 MAP (Kpa) 0 engine RPM 2703 Speed 78Km/h Is the Map Kpa = 0 significant?
  • Does warranty influence the new car choice? 7 Jun 2009 (Forum)
For us there would have been only one choice here, and that would have been the Hyundai, the unlimited mileage 5 year warranty would have clinched the choice for me. On another long running thread another maker's very popular small car has been having engine problems at approx 4 years old, though usually well under the 60K miles warranty cut off. The same maker has not been particularly helpful apparently by the reports many are making.
  • Citroen Despatch (2007 - ) - 04 1900 dripping oil? 4 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I have had an mot recently and asked to look at oil leak which constantly drips when engine has been running and oil is warm i was told it would cost lots of money just to strip down and inverstigate so i have decided to look myself have striped large component from top of engine and it is covered in oil on front face of engine but i dont think its a gasket but it is hard to tell with so much oil around something like the turbo fixed on front of engine of a gas recycling valve if it has one some things i have experienced oil leaking problems with in the past I am going to gunk down the engine block tomorrow and reassemble to see if i can pinpiont the source of the leak from a clean engine but before I reassemble and go through the hassle of then dismatling again has any one got any sugestions as to what might be the cause I have removed the turbo housing and the internal area and the plastic manifold that it connects to is very heavily soiled with oily deposits this is not right is it?
  • Toyota Avensis (2003 - 2008) - 2.2d4d fuel consumption. 1 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I have just bought one brand new old stock and I have had it for 3 weeks now and I am lucky to get 33 mpg out of it. I am old school at 44 and I have been driving it with caution (running in) I have been told this is not nessesary, but old habits die hard. I was expecting around 44 mpg at least. I also think it has quite a bit of road noise and when it is cold the cam chain rattles between 1000 and 3000 rpm, is this common.
  • Renault Scenic (1999 - 2003) - 99 1.6 Car shuddering and jolting in every gear 12 May 2009 (Forum)
My 1999 renault scenic 1.6 does not appear to be running smooth. For about a week now the car has been shuddering and jumping when pulling away. This is particuarly noticable when pulling away in traffic the car does not pull away smooth but rather jumpie as if i were pressing my foot up and down on the excelerator.
  • Land Rover Discovery 3 (2004 - 2009) - Electronic gremlin equals major repair? 11 May 2009 (Forum)
Can this be right? My pal is an excellent driver who probably covers 50,000 miles a year (not with the Disco) running his business. How can a clutch and flywheel fail in 15k on a vehicle that - you might think - is designed to tolerate abuse? Or is it the case that modern motoring means a trick dashboard display that reveals the shortcomings of the real engineering?
  • FIAT Coupe (1995 - 2000) - Sensible or stupid???? 11 May 2009 (Forum)
The previous owner spent lots on it and they will include fitting a new clutch and getting fit to use in this price. I know nothing about them. Need a cheaper to run everyday car so was thinking of replacing my skyline with this. I also have a lancia delta so I know about italian reliability! Think the car is a P or R reg. It has aircon (which actually works!!!)
  • SAAB 9-3 (1998 - 2002) - 99 2.0 Intermittent Clutch/Gearbox problem 8 May 2009 (Forum)
Hi all, Have just bought the above car and overall it's great. However after 5 days driving and a reasonable 120 mile run, it has developed a problem selecting gears. The fault is intermittent and either fully present or not at all. Fault is only present just after start up. What happens is I start the car but then cannot select any gears - the lever will simply not shift to any position, as if no clutch operation at all.
  • Mercedes Benz C-Class W203 (2000 - 2007) - 05 2.2 Car won't rev above 2k and lack of power 7 May 2009 (Forum)
Guys, Any thoughts on what is wrong with my car? It's a W203 C class 2.2 diesel auto, 2005, 116000 miles It's being running a bit rough over the past few days but I thought nothing of it as due a service in 1500 miles. On Friday, it really dropped power. Even with full throttle, it was couuldn't keep up with the flow of traffic when leaving traffic lights and roundabouts and top speed was about 50MPH with my foot flat on the floor.
