  RM Auctions is pitching up at its first sale of 2014 with an impressive lot-list topper - a 1958 Ferrari 250GT LWB California Spider. It tops the 120-car sale, the 15th time RM pitches up for the Scottsdale week - its sale taking place at the Arizona Biltmore Resort & Spa in Phoenix on 16-17 January. The headline Ferrari is the 11th of 50 long-wheelbase California Spiders.

  This is a standard Kent registration (the middle K indicates that it it was registered in the southern county), though it is speculated that UKE signifies “United Kingdom & Empire”, while the 80 marks the wartime PM's birthday. Although largely a standard Series 1 Land Rover, the car does have special modifications to cater for Sir Winston's specific needs. As he was largely chauffeured around his Chartwell estate in Westerham, Kent, there was a passenger-side footwell heater, an extra-wide seat, fold-down armrest and a leather clad grab handle is fitted to the bulkhead.

  Young, novice drivers are the highest risk group on our roads, and male drivers between 17-29 are more than twice as likely to be killed or seriously injured as young female drivers. Thirty per cent of car occupant fatalities are drivers aged 17-24, or passengers of a driver aged 17-24. Yet this age group makes up only eight per cent of all driving licence holders. The report also highlights the fact that young drivers are much more likely to take post-test training if there are proper financial incentives.

  This case established that, provided radio/micro wave emissions did not attempt to transmit to a receiver whether specific or otherwise, no offence had been committed. Therefore simply surrounding an object (e.g. a car) with transmitted radio/micro waves is not an illegal act notwithstanding the fact that the effect would be to disrupt the lawful use of another transmitting device (e.g. a radar gun). It seems to me that the same principle should apply to lasers but as far as I can tell this has never been tested in court."

  A 1957 Tourette Supreme microcar sold for a sensational £31,360 at Historics Winter Classic Car Auction on 26th November. It wasn't the only car to make top money. After protracted bidding, a 1966 Shelby Mustang 350H (Hertz rent-a racer) sold for £93,420; a 1965 Jaguar E-Type S1 4.2 Roadster made £125,440 and a 1990 Lamborghini Countach Anniversary sold for £238,560.
