Is this a way of avoiding paying parking charge penalties? 28 Jan 2012 (Ask HJ)
If you get a fixed penalty notice through the post that also carries penalty points, the computer system first sends you a demand for the cash. When you... -
Why does my Ford Focus lose power? Is it related to replacing the turbocharger? 12 Aug 2010 (Ask HJ)
I have a V-reg Ford Focus 1.8 TDi. The turbo went and covered the whole engine in oil, so I had that replaced and the engine cleaned off, but now i have... -
Passat imperfect 24 Oct 2009 (Ask HJ)
I recently bought an immaculate 2000W Passat Estate with the 1.9 115bhp TDI PD engine. It came with a full dealer history and 94,000miles. I can't find... -
2005 Volkswagen Polo 1.2 E (55PS) - Help with Error Codes 2 Jun 2012 (Forum)
It will not rev above about 3800 RPM, and seems as if it is hitting a limiter. It is sometimes hard to start the engine aswell when it is hot. Starts fine when cold. If I drive somewhere without stopping the engine, it runs fine, revs right up to the red line and does not lack power. But if I drive to the supermarket (for example), park up, then return while the engine is still warm, I get the lacking power problem. -
Volkswagen Golf V (2004 - 2008) - 05 1.6 FSI - Sometimes Lacks Power 15 Apr 2010 (Forum)
On other occasions it is noisier with a rougher engine note and lacks power. This often happens on the same day - it can be fine in the morning, then I park it for a few hours and then start it again and it can be bad again. As an example, it is usually fine going uphill on a motorway at 70mph in 6th gear, but sometimes I've had to drop down to 4th gear to maintain speed on the same stretch of motorway. -
Jeep Cherokee (1993 - 2001) - 98 2.5 Engine shutting off/conking 13 Feb 2010 (Forum)
But I have realised, the same as above, if I turn off the key and on again it "resets" the system and the Jeep starts fine again and drives away. This is also intermittent and can happen 4-5 times in 30 minutes or once a week. For both problems the stop button loses power. I have taken out and cleaned the mechanical stop button and it is/was fine. -
Vauxhall Astra G Diesel (1998 - 2004) - 04 1.7 DTi Lack of power and PAS problem 28 Apr 2009 (Forum)
Lastly, when I step hard on the brakes there is a grinding sound and feeling. Have had both wheels off and the brake pads are fine (they also sailed through an MOT). What could this be? Any help will be hugely appreciated Minski PS Just quickly do you need to replace the whole unit if the mirror gets smashed? Some idiot bumped it while it was parked, the casing is fine but the glass is gone. -
Audi TT Coupe and Roadster (1999 - 2006) - 03 3.2 Locking and starting problems 16 Dec 2008 (Forum)
Last night when I arrived back at home from work and parked up, my TT would not lock with the central locking on my usual key. Thinking it was maybe the battery in the key (even though the key had worked perfectly fine and from long range up till then), I got my spare key and centrally locked the car with that. -
Peugeot 106 XND - battery discharging! 6 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Looking at the Haynes manual wiring diagrams the only components before the fuse box are the starter motor and the alternator. I've visually checked the live wiring from the battery terminals to the above components - looks fine. Since the problem is intermittant (can room fine for a cpl of weeks then the problem occurs) I am suspecting that either the starter motor or alternator is somehow positioning itself internally to cause a short.... -

Motorists being priced off the roads. 30 Aug 2001 (Forum)
The headline being 'Why politicians want us to own cars but not to drive them'. Makes sense i suppose. It starts: With speed cameras, parking fines, congestion charge and taxes, there seems to be no limit to the Government's ingenuity when it comes to making the motorist pay. But still the roads get worse and public transport is a disgrace. -
I took a fine rather than a Speed Awareness Course but now my insurance premium has increased. 22 Sep 2012 (Ask HJ)
Last July my wife was caught on camera in Warrington doing 35mph in a 30mph limit. She duly received a Notice of Prosecution with the alternative of a... -
Mitsubishi Colt 1.5 D - Automatic Gearbox Fault reving up for it to engage 2 Aug 2022 (Forum)
If he leaves the car for just a few days, when he gets in it, he selects the gear he wants, Auto, reverse etc, but he has to rev the car up to about 2000 revs before the actual gearbox bits which at this point the car shoots forward or reverse. Obviosuly, this could cause a problem if he was parked between to cars. Once the car has run for a bit, the gearbox is fine and no issues. I am quite concerned as he is 70 years old so his reaction is not as got as it used to be. The car is booked into the garage next week from where he got it, but I woud like to know if anyone had any suggestions as to what it might be so that he does not get ripped off at the garage. -
Land Rover Discovery 3 TDi - Discovery ice problem 15 Apr 2020 (Forum)
Driving to La Plagne. Heavy rain all the way from UK. Parked in minus 5-15 for a week. On departure, started but ran for 2 seconds. Repeatedly. Garage man said 5 others the same. Found a block of ice in rubber tube after intercooler. Next year same deal. This time saw rubber pipe to manifold sucked flat. -
2000 X Ford Fiesta 1242cc 16v Zetec - Idle speed problem 21 Apr 2019 (Forum)
After a journey of about 50 miles I left a dual carriageway and noticed that the car was idling too fast at junctions, initially only dropping to about 1,500 rpm but later only to 2,000 rpm. After breaking my journey, the car stalled backing out of the parking and I was unable to restart it. It turned over fine (almost new battery) but showed little interest in firing. I left the car for about 90 minutes but could not restart it, so disconnected the battery for a few minutes to see if that would help. -
Should cyclists be insured and have a licence? 14 Aug 2017 (Forum)
Recently a cyclist forced a driver to sweve to avoid hitting him. The car driver ended up colliding with a parked car. The cyclists looked back and knew he had caused the accident, but did not stop. If a driver did that it would be a Failure to Stop and be fined. Why should the car driver, claim on his insurance?. -
ford mondeo tdci 115 2005 - 05 mondeo tdci won't start and sounds funny 7 May 2015 (Forum)
hi all since i've had it it's alway been a bit lumpy when 1st started, so usual injector issue. but if anything it's been slightly better recently. it's covered 115k i came to my car last night after being parked for 10 hours and it initially started, but it didn't sound right, (not the usual injector issue) it was running but just didn't sound right. i tried to rev it but it didn't do anything. i can't remember if i stopped it or it stopped itself after a few seconds. tried starting it a few more times but it wouldn't fire, it was turning over fine. i don't remember seeing the engine light on, but it was getting late! -
any - Buying Secondhand Cars. Easy !!! 20 Mar 2015 (Forum)
The no no's are you can't sorn it then drive it home, drive it home without taxing it, because the seller has to notify the DVLA incase the new owner gets caught on camera or has an accident or parking fine as these would come back on the old owner. Please comment if I have missed anything. -
Mercedes E270CDI - Ticking Like Clock ....when engine on and off??? 15 Feb 2012 (Forum)
After a speedy 12 mile run across fast country roads on Saturday to my parents, on my return journey I experienced loss of power...foot down flat but only got to 30mph. After stopping and restarting all was fine. Now notice a loud intermittent ticking noise from engine - just like a clock - when i drive it. Last night the car made the same noise when switched off and parked on my drive. I've unplugged the battery to stop it. -
Volvo V70 01 Plate T5 2.3L - Throttle position sensor limp mode 10 Oct 2011 (Forum)
"Throttle Position Sensor Switch A" then a crash code for the ECU to force the car inro limp mode. We reset this and the car was fine. I drove back home but 2 miles later the error re-appeared. I popped into my local Bosch independant but the guy in know as not there. However when I returned to the car the fault had cleared itself, so I drove time, another 2 or 3 miles and parked up.
