  • Crash Test Results Flawed???? 17 Nov 2004 (Forum)
The Americans have their own version. My query is, why are the tests not carried out on rear impacts?? This is a very important part of the safety feature, specially if you are rear ended on a motorway when you are stationary in traffic. Another query, why are manufatures allowed to put seats in cars and MPV's right up against the rear window??
  • Best4cars, Buymynew car & others 26 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I've just asked if my local dealer can match and surprise surprise all I get from them is that they can't match it because it must be an import etc etc. So has anyone used any of these retailers recently, and if so, what were your experiences please. Now the dealer has said that, I can't help being a little more cautious about buying on the net.
  • First car for 17 year old 26 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Above all else, the car must be as safe as possible - image is irrelevant. Cheapness to run, partucarly wrt insurance, and reliability is important. My budget would be no more than £1500 assuming that I sell one of my beloved Saabs. I have my own thoughts, but perhaps the serried ranks of wise backroomers can confirm them?
  • Running & Servicing Euro LH Car in GB 14 May 2004 (Forum)
(answer, if you're wondering, is Sarajevo - there's a VW plant there, and all Golfs built are tax-subsidised; plus the locals don't earn much...) Apart from the various import/tax etc things, what are the issues with getting a LH drive VW serviced here - are any of the bits specifically for left-hand drive cars, and therefore going to make a cheap to buy car expensive to run ?!
  • Help - What Car? 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)

  • Mystery car 1 Sep 2003 (Forum)
Small, boxy little rag top which he reckoned looked 60's but was on a '91 'H' plate (possible late import?). Shape reminded him slightly of the Daf variomatic, but he's convinced it was either a Pug or a Renault? Also had a 'sport' badge on it somewhere apparently Any ideas guys? Our best guess so far is a Talbot Samba convertible which took the dealers 6 years to shift?
  • Why no Mazda6 in Supermarkets ? 3 Jul 2003 (Forum)
New avensis and accords I have seen at discount so why no 6 ? Contacted quite a few brokers and importers and they all said it was impossible to get hold of the car. Anyone seen any very good deals yet ?? I'm in the London area.

It is imported from europe but it is UK fully specs. and with 3 year warranty. • My Car or Bangernomics Purchase in Spain 18 Feb 2003 (Forum)
Used cars hold their value more than in the UK so a LHD Spanish banger will cost more than in the UK. The other alternative is to buy a LHD car in another, cheaper, EU country and import it into Spain with all the administration costs involved. Anybody in the backroom been there done that before?
  • Toyota Masterace 28 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I run an imported Toyota Masterace. This is one of the Townace/Liteace type vehicles and, for it's low initial cost, and because of it's specification and interest to the owner/mechanic, I am very pleased with it.
  • Exporting a car to America 8 Jan 2002 (Forum)
A bond of 150 % of the value of the car will be paid to customs which will be returned on sucessful completions of the tests by a registered importer. I managed to find a list of UK cars which have been sucessfully exported to America : Escort cosworth and Several Audi/Mercedes so it can be done. Any advice apprieciated.
  • It's what this site is good at. 5 Jan 2002 (Forum)
And look at the response - loads of genuine useful advice about the diesel engine, and a pretty definitive opinion regarding car polish giving two sensible options. Yes, the political aspects which arise here are important and get aired fully, but lots of people, I'm sure, pick up bucketloads of helpful everyday stuff about their cars. And for many, I think that's what they want and what they're getting. Thanks to all concerned including HJ and Martyn.
  • Mercedes 280S. 22 Jun 2001 (Forum)
My interpretation of this is....... large reliable prestige car but very complex, and with just the chance it was an import or "store prior to sale" car. I don't know but expect he is looking at about £15,000. What do you think about this monster machine? Of course I will advise him to save a bit of cash and buy a Xantia TD for about £5000, not sure we can get him to walk of buy a Morris Minor either.
  • Shock Absorbers 12 Jun 2001 (Forum)
Shock absorbers are, after all, just that. They absorb shocks. I am seeking a supplier for a pair of front shock absorbers for an imported Japanese Masterace (Townace derivitive) MPV. They are fairly conventional in appearance, size and mounting but, you'd think I was asking for the moon when making telephone enquiries to one or two of the suppliers.
  • Exporting a car to New Zealand 7 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I'm thinking about migrating to New Zealand in about 9/12 months time and am investigating the pro's and con's of exporting a car there. The New Zealand car market seems to be flooded with imported 2nd hand Japanese cars with dubious model names such as "Chaser", "Windom", "Regulus" and "Chariot" - (Do you know anyone that would buy a car called a "Chariot" ?! ). Anyway, I digress, the prestige (German) brands such as BMW, MB, Audi etc. seem to hold their value extremely well - i.e.
  • Wheelchair in car considerations 22 Mar 2025 (Forum)
I need to start using a wheelchair. I have never had anything to do with wheelchairs so I was wondering what are the important things to consider if you need to carry a wheelchair in a car. I know that I want a self propelled chair without a motor. My car is a 2025 MG HS hybrid +. I have frequent hospital visits that involve hotel stays so I need to be able to carry a small suitcase although this could go on the rear seat.
  • Persisting with RHD cars - - was it the biggest mistake the UK made? 4 Oct 2023 (Forum)
I sometimes wonder if one of the biggest political errors the UK made was not to convert to LHD like Sweden did when I was a teenager.  At that time the UK still had an important car and truck industry.  Now, apart from the relatively unimportant high end market, it struggles. Anyone who travels abroad will realise what little choice there is in the UK as so many manufacturers just don't bother with RHD versions of some models, and in turn we seem now to export relatively few LHD vehicles compared to other LHD countries with a well developed vehicle manufacturing base.
  • Vauxhall corsa D 2008. 1.2 petrol - Immobiliser issue 25 Jul 2023 (Forum)
Vauxhall main agentprovided codes but possibly not all that's required..I believe there's ancall important 4 digi security code missing. Car only covered 46k and in good shape. Seems indy garage not able to fix..shame to scrap car. Sure I saw a YouTube bypass but cannot find again.
  • Tow Car 29 Jun 2023 (Forum)
My budget is £20000 and ideally would like 2019 or newer. Due to a long commute mpg is important and I would like at least to get 43mpg as I do in the fiesta. I dont really want diseal, or a big suv if can get away with it. I like the ford and while the puma or focus has the towing capacity unsure if the 1ltr ecoboost will last.
