Basic MIG welder...help please 24 Sep 2007 (Forum)
i am considering buying a basic mig welder for small diy car jobs once in a blue moon..mainly thin gauge/small jobs nothing big and no frequent use budget £100-200, would be happier with nearer £100 i see you can get gasless machines, to me they sound worth considering as chances are i would be working outdoors in the breeze and theres no chance of running out of gas when the shops are shut. are they worth considering ? if not why would i be better getting one that does gas and gasless so i have the best of both worlds? im keen to get a machine with a non live torch ..is that best? -
Milton Keynes - can't believe it's just me 18 Sep 2007 (Forum)
For two weekends running I've had the misfortune to go to Milton Keynes. One, the signposting is rubbish. For example, signposts off a main road like the A5 might just say 'Central & Eastern MK', with nothing about which smaller places 'central and E' might contain. -
Renault Clio II (2001 - 2007) - 00 172 Engine starts, then dies. 14 Sep 2007 (Forum)
If I have managed to keep the revs up and the engine alive for a few seconds then the car is normally ok and will keep running. However, if I mis-time it and don't keep the revs high enough then they drop to zero and the engine dies. What is the problem? Any advice appreciated. I'm taking it back to the garage for checks, but it would nice to be armed with some information before I go. -
Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - Vectra engine management light 18 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Im not sure theres an easy answer to my question but any help would be appreciated. The car has done 140,000 miles and is running fine, but about 18 months ago (90,000 miles) the picture of a car with a spanner started coming on intermittantly. Since then it changes to the picture of the engine for a few months and then changes back to the spanner one. -
GB Stickers on cars. 9 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Yesterday I did a very vulgar booze run to Calais, so in the space of a few hours joined the P and O ferry traffic both ways. I was struck by how few cars/vans had bothered to display GB stickers or plates. That included some very newy-registered cars where I would have thought it would be the norm now, rather than the exception, to specify a GB plate when buying it. -
99 Mercedes C220 CDI temperature rise 4 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Hi, Just recently my 1999 Mercedes C220 CDi temperature gauge has started to rise higher than it has before I have checked the electric fan and that seems to be running OK but the gauge still rises above the normal centre position, It hasn't boiled over its just that its worried me when I'm in traffic as soon as the road clears the gauge goes back to normal or sometimes slightly lower than normal. -
Road - drainage rights 29 Jul 2007 (Forum)
If water run-off from a road has always drained into a nearby marsh or stream, I presume that a landowner has no right to block that drainage and as a result create a permanent flood in the road. But what happens if that situation newly arises because of increased rainfall? -
VW polo heating has gone 28 Jun 2007 (Forum)
The blower itself currently only works on two settings it seems to manage luke warm but never seems to run particularly cold or warm. Is there a possibility this could be related to electrics as I think mine are a bit dodgy? I'm sick of getting ripped off or being partonised, it would appear that being a young, female who's not a mechanic equals big bucks to the garage! -
Driving can still be enjoyable! 8 Jun 2007 (Forum)
Not bad for a five year old car with nearly 120k on the clock, really drives as well as when new in these circumstances (I have had it since new), in fact perhaps better, it has become freer revving as the miles have accumulated. So I didnt regret not taking the bike though off for a run on that this evening weather permitting! -
Astra 1.7DTL surging problem 3 Jun 2007 (Forum)
If it was a petrol engine I'd say it was fuel starvation. It is NOT a misfire. Apart from this problem it runs well and is a really good car. I have changed the engine mountings, injectors, injector pipes, fuel pipe between the filter and pump, all of the sealing washers, throttle damper, fuel stop solenoid, cleaned and checked the EGR valve, as well as regularly replace service items such as fuel and air filters. -
Does 'refurbishing' a car make sense? 31 May 2007 (Forum)
My Volvo S80 (2.4 petrol) has now reached 135k miles (it's a 1999 reg), and is still - hopefully - running well. When I bother to wash it, it looks practically brand new :-) However, there will no doubt come a time when the engine and/or gearbox will start 'complaining'. The car suits my needs very well, so would it make sense - financial or otherwise - to completely 'refurbish' it. -
Focus 1.8 sport s 29 May 2007 (Forum)
I seem to recall that when I was looking last year, the general opinion was that 1.6 was a better buy than 1.8. Would that be because of running costs (petrol, insurance, tax) or is there another reason too? Thanks in advance!! Ruth -
Dealer Warranty (unexperienced owner) 22 May 2007 (Forum)
I bought a secondhand Honda Jazz in July 2006 from Honda Dealer and got a 12 months warranty. I am looking to book for a Service before the warranty runs out, but I heard that dealer service are very expensive (not sure how much at Honda), if I go else where (Kwik Fit or Nationwide Autocentres, or anywhere else you would recommend?), would I still get the warranty parts free of charge?? -
A couple of Automatic gearbox issues 6 May 2007 (Forum)
Is it the gearbox already damaged or is there air trapped inside the gearbox? Will it help if taken out to run? Or do i need to bleed the gearbox?! Any help would be great! -
Clio timing belt / water pump problem 3 May 2007 (Forum)
The timing belt had certainly never been changed on the car before (my book recommended doing that at 72,000 miles), could it have been a coincidental problem, or could the slightest of problems with the water pump (like it running dry for example) cause the belt to fail? As mentioned I'm curious to find out after having paid out over £500 on repairs caused by the timing belt breaking :-( -
Seat Toledo TDiSE loosing coolant? 26 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I am puzzled that my 1.9 diesel 110 bhp Toledo continues to loose coolant. After a round trip of 230 miles, the coolant usually goes to or just under the minimum line after having started on the maximum line in the coolant box. The car still does around 60 mph on long runs and doesn't use any oil. It has not lost any power, it doesn't smoke and the oil is clean. I recently got the coolant cap replaced; but it still looses coolant. Hozes have been replaced. The boss at my main dealer is a thoroughly experienced man. -
Another London(outskirts) parking querey 19 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I'm thinking initially of Uxbridge (Metropolitan line) or possibly one of the stations around Hounslow (on the line that runs to Heathrow)...............but I've no idea which stations have parking in or around the immediate area. It doesn't really matter where I park as long as it : a. is easily accessed from the M4/M25/M40 without hitting too much congestion around 10-12.00 on a Saturday morning b. is somewhere where I can park close to a station cheaply (or free) and is reasonably safe/secure to leave my car for the day - until 8-9 pm. -
306 diesel won't rev past 3100rpm... 18 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The new engine came from a citroen zx and has a bosch fuel pump without immobiliser, in order to get it to run all I wired in was the stop soleniod. The old engine had a lucas pump with immobiliser, don't know if any of this helps. For some reason the engine won't go past 3100rpm. It flies up to this point, really does. -
BMW 5 Series split alloy wheel 11 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Her local dealer are saying that there is a slight dent on the rim where it looks like she may have hit a pothole and the resultant puncture (run flat tyres) has weakened the alloy and then its "weakest point" has broken as a result. She has phoned BMW direct and they are sticking to the same story. On closer inspection of the tyre at Kwik Fit, the tyre is not punctured anywhere.! -
2001 Ford Mondeo Duratec 2.0 Di EGR? 6 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Dear all, Have a 2001 ford mondeo 2.0 diesel covered some serious miles in it as its a taxi 186,000!!!! Had a problem about 5 months ago were the car was running fine at start up and after a few miles it would start spluttering if it was rev'd hard it would chuck white/blue smoke out of the back. Took to my mechanic who thought it was the fuel sender pump he took it off cleaned the contacts and whacked it with a hammer (thats one way i suppose.)
