  My wifes car ( above), has just been serviced at a main Skoda agent. Upon checking the invoice, she has  been charged for 9ltrs of oil costing £52.56 + vat, surely they have ripped her off?. What should be the ammount used to do an oil and filter change?. She also asked if she could have a variable service (2yrs), owing to the low mileage she does.

  I have to change the oil on a recently aquired P12 2.0l petrol. The manual specifies almost every combination of 0W20, 0W30, 5W30, 10W40, 20W50 you can think of. However, there is no mention of 5W40. I have a lot of quality 5W40 oil available from a previous vehicle and wondered if this would be OK?

    I can see it clearly from the top but it sem burrried under lots of bits!  Also is it safe to use an oil extractor on this engine - when I push the dipstick in I feel some resistance after a few cm, does this mean a sump plug only job?  I wiyuld like to do the job myself ( using genuine Renault filter and Elf oil ) as I feel 18k is to long to let this motor go in between changes.

  couple of quick questions - on the 1.8 petrol is it possible to access the oil filter element to change it, and the sump drain plug to drain it WITHOUT dropping off the undershield that exists under the engine? Cos the shield is hard to drop off if your doing it in the drive outside your house and have it up on the car jack.

  Hello all, I have a 1994 espace with a 4 speed auto. I do the servicing on the car without problems these days, Apart from the Autobox oil change, or anything to do with the autobox. I cannot find any info in the two different manuals I have....it says give this to Renault. Unless they have some Robot to do this it cannot be rocket-science.

  My cars oil requires changing but looking at the oil available and its vast difference in price i have no idea which to choose. I have a 1.6 Ford Orion LX. Whats the difference between synthetic, semi synthetic and mineral and which is the best for my car?

  There was no smoke from exhaust but bubbles in the coolant. Took it to my garage and they diagnosed a blown head gasket. Got that changes and now it is blowing grey smoke out and going through 1lt of oil every 20 or so miles. Garage trying to tell me the bottom end went when gasket blew but there was NO SMOKE before at all. Any advise would be great.

  Hi - can anyone clarify which oil I should be using in a 1996 (mark 4) 1.8 diesel Fiesta, with the Endura engine please? It has covered just over 50K miles, which I believe to be genuine. I probably do around 12-14K miles a year, should I be doing 6-month/6K mile changes?

  I have just bought a second hand 1997 1.3 EFI Fiesta LX 37k miles for my lad to learn in. It has a full Ford SH, but I have noticed there is some brown crispy deposits around the oil filler and in the rocker cover. Will this dissapear with frequent oil changes, or is there some additive I can add to the oil to give the engine a good clean out? Otherwise the engine sounds and goes fine, no sign yet of the tappet noise which is usual with this engine.

  Cracking little car in metallic black with only 500 miles on the clock. I obviously won?t be doing any oil changes myself until its out of warranty but wanted to know what oil to be used for any topping up. Two local Skoda garages in my area and rang both of them up to ask which oil to use. One said use any 10.40 and the other said 15.40 which they sell at £3.00 per litre and is Skoda branded oil and would presumably be either straight mineral or semi.

  Have had to top up coolant twice within last month, with no visible signs of loss - then car started to 'miss' when accelerating, first under low revs but now throughout rev range. Wondered whether missing was due to spark plugs, as had not been changed for a while, but when I removed the leads I noticed the first plug (to far left) was swimming in oil. Could this cause the misfire? Wondered whether rocker cover gasket leak could be the cause (but have changed this 3 times within last 2 years...!)

  Oil change is often advised 'every year or x miles, whichever comes sooner.' I haven't changed mine for three years 'cos I only do a few thousand a year and the revs rarely go above 2500 [Italian tune-up every 1000 miles or so when warm to flush the oilways].

  i own a 1996 1.8 diesel mondeo, about 6 weeks ago, when i was in a traffic jam, i was creeping along when suddenly the engine speed soared, redlined, then settled back down, i was told this could be due to the turbo being nackered as there was oil in the intercooler, so i changed it, 4 weeks later it did the same.....stuck in traffic, engine speed goes through the roof, but i was ready so i stalled it - (wording changed - DD) . there was oil in the intercooler again!

  At the time I suspected it was the hydraulic tappets on their way out. After a search on the 'net, I read that the tappets could be making noise because of the engine oil being aerated, so I did a full oil / filter change and the problem was sorted. In the last few days, though, the noise has come back again, even though the car's only done around 1000 miles since the oil was changed.

  Hi - can anyone help solve my notchy gear change problem when changing from 1st-2nd on my nearly new Fiesta? Its 6 mths old. Could it just use some oil or is it something more serious? Thanks

  I've been told by my local MB dealer that as my Merc CDI has a chassis no. starting with WDC something... that it doesn't need a coolant change for 15yrs!! They also say there is no need to change the fuel filter for 5yrs. Is this correct or are they just saying this as it would mean one of the fitters would need to get on the floor to reach the drain plug and possibly get oil on his overalls!!

  hi looking into starting my own servicing company and wondered wat you all thought of the idea, basically 3 service levels, 6 month, annual and 3 year and they go as follows 6 month, approx cost £40 plus any extra parts oil/filter change levels check tyres/pressures check coolant level check brake/discs check rad fan check spark plug/glow plug check annual service, approx cost £70 as 6 month service plus brake pads/shoes changed air filter changed fuel filter changed compression test valve clearences checked exhaust checked electrics/mot test items checked spark plugs/glow plugs changed 3 year service, approx cost £250-300 as annual service plus brake discs changed coolant change cambelt/tensioners changed fanbelt changed headgasket, head decoked waterpump changed gearbox oil changed bushes/rubbers mechanical components checked can anyone spot anything glaringly obvious i missed or have an opinion on the idea are the costs right or to expensive obviously things will differ car to car and the timings for services aren't fixed but ive always ran my cars by the above and they've been great and haven't ever suffered a major mechanical failure cheers chris

  ,98 2L CDX 97K gen mileage took the car for a spin at the weekend & unusally had the radio off !! noticed that when accelerating in third a whining/tufbo noise which disappears on changing to fourth wondering if it was time for gearbox oil change with an additive ???

  Hi all, My Mrs is having her pollen filter changed but can't find where it is located and thats even after looking in the Haynes book! One other quick question, she's also having an oil change but the oil sump plug has completely gone from a hexagon bolt to a round whats left of it bolt with no sides to put a spanner on totally chewed up!
