I have just bought a second hand 1997 1.3 EFI Fiesta LX 37k miles for my lad to learn in. It has a full Ford SH, but I have noticed there is some brown crispy deposits around the oil filler and in the rocker cover. Will this dissapear with frequent oil changes, or is there some additive I can add to the oil to give the engine a good clean out? Otherwise the engine sounds and goes fine, no sign yet of the tappet noise which is usual with this engine.

Could these crispy deposits just be a rusting rocker cover? If it's only had short journeys then moisture would build up under the filler cap quite nicely.
I've got a 1.3 HCS variant with a filler neck that's got these 'deposits', I always assumed it was just rusty.

I think that mf is correct and it will be rust caused by short journies. I had a 1995 Fiesta which had this and when it was in for an oil change the mechanic removed the rocker cover, cleaned it up and replaced it and it didn't cause any problems. The engine always ran ok.

Didn't seem like rust, but I'll remove the rocker cover and clean it up.
