  • £8k to spend. What to buy? 28 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Having trawled through Autotrader and HJ's CBCD I've come up with a short list and would appreciate your feedback: Citroen C5 Estate 2.0i/2.2 HDi Ford Mondeo 2.0i/2.0 TDCi Zetec-S/Ghia X Honda Accord 2.0i SE Exec (old shape) MG ZT+ 1.8t 160 Saab 9-5 2.0t Vauxhall Omega 2.2i CD I've briefly run the Mondeo and Rover 75 in the past and liked them. The Mondeo is a strong contender but is there anything else worth considering? Many thanks, PhilDS
  • BMW X5 used off road - shock! 14 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Had to take a kind of 'bypass' dual carriageway with traffic travelling 70-80mph, plus slower trucks. It was raining and very windy, even though the road runs in a cutting. A BMW X5 came past me at about 80-85mph and pulled in front of a big truck in front. I didn't see exactly what happened in the next few seconds but then saw the X5 shoot across the hard shoulder and up the approx 30-degree embankment.
  • Is there a "hidden" petrol shortage? 4 Oct 2005 (Forum)
The local shell station closed unexpectedly yesterday afternoon, stating problems with the pumps. The local Tesco had half its pumps out of action and those that were running were only operating at a fraction of their usual speed. Texaco around the corner also has half the pumps out. Further afield and the story is repeated at another Shell, an Esso and a Sainsbury filling station.
  • Trade in £ can't be that low surely? 15 Sep 2005 (Forum)
My mate has a Vauxhall Vectra 2.2DTI LS 5dr Automatic that he has been running privately as his company transport. It is on an '03 plate (March 03) and has a full Vauxhall service history. It is in average condition (few stone chips, tiny dents, etc, but other than that very good with everything working on it) and it has 81,700 miles on the clock.
  • escort efi cutting out? immobiliser? 6 Sep 2005 (Forum)
Once she has stopped she switches off the ignition and removes the keys she waits for the immobiliser to kick in (light flashes to the left of the clock on dash) disarmes it using the key fob then re-starts the engine. She says it starts up first time and runs perfect till it cuts out again. The car ticks over perfect and drives perfect and had a quick look the other day and it was fine, never cut out sitting on the drive. She rang today saying it was cutting out again on the way to work.

  • Sterling 827 SLi, 1991 29 Aug 2005 (Forum)
Hopefully, setting the timing will correct a long time over-heating problem that I have had with the car, or, at the very least, will eliminate the timing as related to the problem. Other than that, the car runs absolutely great. All other remedies have been done, including flushing the cooling system, replacing the radiator and the thermostat and replacing the head gaskets. Is there a trick I can use or an ignigtion ECU interface I can get that will allow me to do the adjusting?
  • Volvo V40 Buying advice 20 Aug 2005 (Forum)
My question is does anybody have any advice regarding what to look for on this car, particularly one around this age and price. If I get one with a FVSH, I'm guessing I should not run into too many expensive problems. What is the cost of servicing/parts like? How about MPG and what are the best engines to look for? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Finally, anybody want to but a hatchback Vectra (very well looked after, you know I am a member of the backroom after all!!)
  • Alfa Romeo 33 - cutting out 3 Aug 2005 (Forum)
I bought it in good condition with recently serviced items (oil change, air filter, plugs, leads and cap). It was running well for the first couple of weeks. Then I noticed it was occasionally cutting out when slowing down towards a junction. But it would restart immediately each time. Now the problem has developed in that it would cut out after about 5-10 minutes of driving and fail to restart (turn over but not fire up).
  • Is it worth buying?? 24 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Even at that I don't know if the engine is knackered let alone the gearbox! Anyone know what it's worth. In reasonable running condition without mot i reckon it would only be worth about £600. What is a fair price??? or should it be going to the scrap yard?? Any thoughts appreciated. Thanks. MMussen.
  • 306 cooling fans not working! 21 Jun 2005 (Forum)
Have checked fuses, relays, all the wiring for the sensors around the thermostat housing, all seems fine. I'm just after ideas of what else to check, I've not run 12v direct to the fans yet but to be honest, both fans packing up at the same time is pretty remote, but I will check anyway. I've read that there is a box of tricks called a Bitron that controls the fans for the cooling and the air con, now, if this failed, would it stop the fans working completely?
  • V-reg Clio 1.6 Start Probs When Hot 19 May 2005 (Forum)
The problem is at cold start the vehicle starts perfectly on the first turn of the engine and I have no running problems at all. Once it has been driven for half hour or so and I turn it off it won't fire up. The engine turns over fine but just won't kick or splutter at all until it's been left for an hour or so to cool down.
  • Renault megane DTi Limp mode problem 16 May 2005 (Forum)
Hi, just wondering if I can pick your collective brains about this. I've got a 1998 Renault Megane 1.9 DTi which runs perfectly....except for in the rain at high speed. If I drive on a fast road in the rain with lots of spray, the engine will suddenly without warning go into "limp mode" meaning it idles at 1000rpm and I cannot accelerate etc.
  • Audi A6 2.5tdi Quattro?Watch out! 12 May 2005 (Forum)
(the car does have full leather, climate control, air con, alloys etc) Also what sort of mileages can these cars realistically run to? What do I need to watch out on this car Also never had an AUdi Quattro before so what do i need to watch/listen out for? Does the quattro system need regular servicing or anything of the like?
  • Affordable public transport 2 May 2005 (Forum)
A resident of Manchester was on a mobile at the said Passenger Waiting Environment, and when asked what the two day old structure was like, he said it had already developed a smell of urine and tobacco. The residents of Manchester must be grateful that they have such public spirited politicians running their city. I can think of many authorities who would have thrown 250 grand away on providing health care for the elderly or improving education for those too young or infirm to even vote. Good heavens, some might even fritter it away on improving the roads.
  • Zafira oil change nightmare 10 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I took the car back, and they said they would check it out, which they did. They managed to break the filler cap in the meantime, but out driving today, smoke started pouring out of the bonnet and the smell was one of burning. It seems oil has been leaking out of the filler cap, running down the heat shield and onto the exhaust manifold, hence the smoke and smell. The AA patrol man who checked the car for me said that there had been to much oil in the engine, and there was a possibility of damage to the catalytic converter.
  • Astra 1.7 DTI Misfire 9 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Its only apparent on holding the car at that speed only and does not appear during acceleration up to, through or beyond that rev range. It almost feels like the car is running out of fuel for a better phrase, but as soon as you accelerate or drop below 2600rpm its gone. I've checked for airleaks and reseated sensors that I can see and now I've reached the limit of my ability (!!).
  • Micra occasionally stalling ????? 3 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I have checked the common things ( filters, plugs, doped it with Redex, taken it for a motorway blast as it does mostly school runs etc ) but can't find any obvious fault or improvement. Just recently one headlight was out and the fault was tracked to a corroded fuse. The same fuse box houses the fuse for the fuel injector and suspecting similar I cleaned, WD40ed and replaced it - no difference either !
  • What to do next...if anything 29 Jan 2005 (Forum)
They have offered to have it back for another day but admit that they don't have a clue and they aren't prepared to admit any liability anyway, and who can blame them. Rather than mess about any more I decided to live with it. After all, it seems to run perfectly OK.....UNTIL I checked fuel consumption over the last 446 miles: 32.5mpg. Admittedly I have no idea of what it was doing before but that seems pathetic. Does anyone have any idea of what I should do next?
  • MB C class W203 25 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Hi I've recently purchased a C-class MM, pre-reg and running fine. I have read about the car pulling and accelerated suspension wear. My family has the new s and E class cars and some have the old c-class, no problems noted. However, speaking to a guy at work who has a 18 month old c-class with 12k on the clock from new - pulling to the left and knocking noise, reparied a few weeks back by repalcing bushes on track rod ends?
