VW Bora diesel, high mileage? 13 May 2007 (Forum)
Hello all, I have been offered a VW Bora TDI (90bhp) S model 2000/X with 113k miles for £2900. Although not as practical as an hatchback (prefer Audi A3 or Golf mk4 but these are more expensive), it is comparatively cheaper and does seem to be better value for money. -
pug 206 CC (02 2ltr) rear noise 26 Apr 2007 (Forum)
The closest approximation to the sound I can get is when you brake on a pair of rusty discs for the first time - however this car is well used with no hint of rust on the discs. Any suggestions? Thanks S. -
Tyres - is this a good idea? 3 Apr 2007 (Forum)
I bought my 2000 Mondeo nearly a year ago, and although it came with four new tyres, three were Firestone Firehawk 700's whilst the other was a budget Stunner branded tyre, put on the rear drivers side. The two fronts will die within the next two months having done 16k miles, but at the back (proving you get what you pay for) the Firestone is still some time from death, but the 'stunner' is barely legal! -
I fancy getting a LR Defender 14 Mar 2007 (Forum)
As the title suggests, I'm interested in getting a Defender. My partner and I already have a car each so it would be used for weekends. I'm no expert on 4x4's so a litlle help or advice would be gratefully received. I've trawled the web for some inspiration and have the following questions: 90,110 or 130? Are ex-Army non turbo versions any good? Most vehicles I've seen on the web have quite high mileages. -
I Have A Question - Volume 173 3 Mar 2007 (Forum)
Due to unfortunate circumstances, my wife and I has come in to possession of a Sinclair Microvision. A 1970's 2" screened 'pocket' telly which we have to sell and give the proceeds to charity. Pictures here: http://tinyurl.com/ysctoa http://tinyurl.com/yupafn I've googled it, and apart a site that tells its history, http://tinyurl.com/yqxfwu, and another that has them listed at approx £160, there is not a lot of info about what it's worth. -
GT Champiro / Firestone Tyres? 26 Feb 2007 (Forum)
Was going to use blackcircles, but would have to wait 2 or days for the booking.... so I may be forced into Kwik-Fit, even though I swore Id never use them! Just had a quick look on there Web site and there cheapest Tyres seem to be GT Champiro 55's. 2 of them fully fiited for £149 (205/55/16V) seems dear compared to etyres, blackcircles etc, but I do need them today, also they have an offer on Firestones, I can get 2 of them fully fitted for £155 (inc 15% discount for the offer) I believe Firestones to be part of the Bridgestone company but not sure? -

Garage in Southport - recommendations? 13 Feb 2007 (Forum)
To cut a long story short, I have a Nissan Primera worth at best £2000 which needs new tyres, brake discs and brake pads all round plus an O/S CV Boot. Nissan want silly money to fit them as do most national companies. I'm not a Southport local so don't know who is good or bad so can someone please recommend a small, friendly and cheap place to fix my faithful old car? -
How do they justify different DSG prices 7 Feb 2007 (Forum)
A colleague is currently looking at changing his car and is interested in a Golf GTI or A3 S line. I have given him the usual advice of look at SEAT or Skoda as they are essentially the same car. What struck me though when looking at his brochures and prices lists is that if you have a DSG gearbox in VW or Audi it is approx £1300 but if you spec into on the same engine on a SEAT it is at least £400 cheaper. -
Bong, Bong, my foglight's on 6 Jan 2007 (Forum)
Mrs S's 98 Hyundai Accent has always bong'd when she tries to exit the car with the lights on; yesterday we were puzzled to find it doing this when the lights were definitely off. Today I noticed that I had inadvertently left the rear foglight switched on after demonstrating it yesterday for the MOT tester; therefore even though ignition and foglight were off there was an audible warning as well as the dash light that we were being prattish by driving round with this light on. -
citroen xantia new owner 12 Sep 2006 (Forum)
hi,i have just bought a 1998 s plate 1.8 xantia but unfortunately it came without an owners manual,so i am looking for some advice from anybody in the know.I have checked the suspension using the lever at the gear stick and the car goes through the full range of movement. However when looking under the bonnet i cannot see any where obvious to check the hydraulic fluid and like i said i have no owners manual.I have noticed in the top right corner a square holder with a small clear dome with 2 rings around the dome and a small needle with a red cap inside and i was wondering also what that is.First time with a citroen so not clued up on them but so far seems very comfortable and economical. So until i get a haynes manual anybody give me some pointers. Thanks in advance for any advice you can give. -
Volvo steering wheel leather fault 1 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Earlier today, and in the knowledge that this is a widespread issue, I went to my local Volvo dealer today to show that the leather on my 2003 V70's steering wheel is "delaminating" (for want of a better description) in one area in to pieces that look like burnt bin liner plastic, and to ask for their support in a goodwill payment from VCUK. Was very pleased to receive the straight off reply "Known problem. -

coolant loss Volvo V70 tdi 14 May 2006 (Forum)
All I can think is that the cap on the expansion tank might be playing up? It is the later green one (I know early V70's had a problem with the caps). Is there a suitable dye (like the A/C dye) that can be stuck in the coolant - or should antifreeze show up under uv anyway? thanks Mark (Volvo quality ? pah) -
Heavy bill! 10 May 2006 (Forum)
ve just had my first service on my L reg Honda CRX (2 seater roadster). I have used a main dealer as it?s my first service on this car and I?m aware that it needs a little TLC. The service has identified quite a few items that need doing: The service itself was £168. The other items that apparently need doing are: Cam cover gasket = £42 New battery = £65 Something (? -
Peugeot 406 Rear Discs & Pads 13 Apr 2006 (Forum)
But Haynes manual says all thats needed is to push it back using a screwdriver Against the old pad or using a G-clamp. I've just had it Mot'd and its reported that the o/s/r disc was corroded so as I've got front judder I thought I'd change the discs and pads all round in one go. Anyone out there tell me which it is?? Thanks -- These are the views of Robin the Technician with 35 years in the trade. -

VW Sharan VR6 blown head gasket 17 Feb 2006 (Forum)
I've been lumbered with a pig. I have a Sharan VR6 Auto with a suspected blown head gasket,it;s losing water but there's nowhere obvious, nothing in the oil etc. I went to VW main dealer and explained problem. He said the head gasket was probably blown. He then said that it was what they called a "throw away engine" and wasn't worth fixing.
