Tyres - is this a good idea? - Demon
I bought my 2000 Mondeo nearly a year ago, and although it came with four new tyres, three were Firestone Firehawk 700's whilst the other was a budget Stunner branded tyre, put on the rear drivers side. The two fronts will die within the next two months having done 16k miles, but at the back (proving you get what you pay for) the Firestone is still some time from death, but the 'stunner' is barely legal! Would it be a good idea to replace this cheap one with another cheap one which'll cost arouind £35, then change both rear tyres when the Firestone dies which will probably be in about 4-6 months...? Bearing in mind I'm on a money-saving trip here, with full service, new insurance, new tax and mot and two new front tyres all due this month, is this money-saving genius or motoring madness...?!

Yes it seems like a sensible plan from an economic point of view and if I was in your shoes then I would probably do exactly that - Now cue the crowd who will now tell you that you should always fit new tyres to the rear not the front.

What about the spare though, is it a full size tyre, how worn is that?

What's the spare like?

The car's got alloys, which probably explains why the spare is a brand new Continental tyre wrapped around a plain steel wheel that probably came with the car originally (no driving above 50MPH with spare wheel on...!) Interesting point though, my neighbour drove his alloyed Escort for about six months with the spare on, which clearly had a yellow sticker warning about not going over 50, which suggests he was driving around all that time with a flat in the boot.

Re Camac tyres - I've tried a few outlets that are supposed to stock them but none are listed.

Has the company gone out of business? It seems to be based in Manchester.
