coil packs problem not just 20VT? 20 Feb 2003 (Forum)
A failed coil pack being the problem. The coil pack was replaced the same day and his car is now running perfectly again. (Must admit I am a little peeved that Seat have coil pack supplies on tap, whilst Audi have a 6 week back log.) So do other engines in the VAG range use these rogue coil packs? -
New Mondeo as towcar - GrahamM 15 Feb 2003 (Forum)
One other point; HJ mentioned some time ago that early models had front seat problem - not kind to the coccyx, and plastic pins protruding through the padding. Any advice on what registrations/production runs to avoid here, please? Many thanks GrahamM -
Corsa 1.4 Hi-torque misfire 4 Feb 2003 (Forum)
It has done 36000 miles and is in generally good nick. The misfire is only noticeable when the engine is warm and when running on a partial throttle setting, eg poddling along at 30 or 40 on the flat, when the car seems to jiggle along. Nothing drastic- no vibration is felt through the gear lever, it just doesn't feel smooth. -
speedy replacement 28 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Hi all, I currently run a 2001 Seat Ibiza Cupra, which I am really happy with. I am in the mood to change it in the near future, partly because I feel like a change, and partly because I have trouble fitting my golf clubs in the boot! -
Golf splutters on motorway. 9 Jan 2003 (Forum)
Week 3 - I've got someone to clean the carb, replace the sparks, replace the air filter and the coil. Which after all that, did improve its running, but only slightly and did not resolve the main problem. Week 5 - Someone said that the carb is icing up and I should set it to a winter setting. Is there a winter setting (I'm blowed if I can find it) on the carb? -
Ford escort 1.4 CVH carb problems 20 Dec 2002 (Forum)
if it makes any difference the cars done 116k and K reg Also should the oil filler be blowing or sucking if the cap is removed with the engine running? -
Buying Old Cars Unseen 8 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Maybe for a nearly new car still under makers guarantee this method *might* make some sense, but for an old banger or a classic (very old, cherished, banger) who would commit to buy unseen, having not even heard the engine running? -
Escort Diesel 1.8TD (L) Fuel Pump 6 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Also, when finally starts after twenty minutes, it seems to stutter on two cylinders , then fires with greyish/white smoke from exhaust polluting the air. When running, goes great, starts first time when engine warm/hot. It is only after engine cold that probems occur. Any views for a non-technical person, please. Thanks, Ric -
Invisible Morons 19 Nov 2002 (Forum)
There have been a couple of threads running recently about those who insist on using fog and driving lights on lovely clear evenings and even on nice sunny days, but where were all the lights today when they were needed? Down here in Essex, & probably elsewhere, it has been one of those murky, rainy autumn days with loads of spray flying and rainwater laying everywhere, a day when everyone really should have lights on I think we would all agree. -
brake noise 13 Nov 2002 (Forum)
, and the brakes are applied gently the noise sets itself up, if however the roundabout is approached and the brakes really anchored on, the noise is much less likely to develop. The brake pads fitted are mintex 1144 compound, running on solid discs, the manufacturer of which unfortunately escapes me at the moment. Incidentally this noise is LOUD, and quite annoying. Before all the do-gooders get on to me about it, the brakes do honestly work brilliantly, asides from the noise! -
Fiesta 1.1 and damp 17 Oct 2002 (Forum)
It does this because the oil is partly emulsified, and bunging up a breather pipe (?) which goes from the oil filler cap. I can start the car just by removing the cap, letting it run for a few seconds then replacing it. It's then fine until the next time. I discussed this here last year, and as a result replaced the head gasket and did some other bits, all to no avail. The problem is she does about 2 miles (or less) each way to work, and barely any other mileage. -
Passat Electric Windows 10 Sep 2002 (Forum)
My portable CD player, which was in the glove box, was missing so someone had certainly been having a look inside but the alarm was not going and the car started first time (ie not run down by a ringing alarm). Should I be worried that someone could have written down the VIN and registration number? If so, what should I do? Any input gratefully received. -
Rover 216 cooling systems 6 Aug 2002 (Forum)
This is a cry for help. I run a 1996 Rover 216si new shape car. 2 months ago the engine blew which resulted in my having an ivor searle re-manufactured engine installed. However while the engine is great I am having terrible problems with the cooling system which which just does not seem to function. -
VW Golf poor suspension? 2 Aug 2002 (Forum)
Calling all Golf (TDI in particular) Drivers. My company runs a couple of 51 reg Golf SE TDI's (100bhp). Both drivers are complaining of incredibly bouncey front suspension. One has clouted a cats eye in the bottom of a dip recently, the other had a minor off road excursion recently due to excessive bounce. -
Coolant loss, any idea's? 23 Apr 2002 (Forum)
The problem has become worse, to such an extent I?m loosing 1 litre of coolant every 30 odd miles, and I?ve stopped running the car. The coolant seems to be coming out of the expansion tank vent, and pooling on the engine protector cover. I guess this is happening because the system is being pressurised by a leak somewhere. -
Dartford Toll Continuance 6 Apr 2002 (Forum)
I have received the DTLR Highways Agency response to the consutlation process on continuing the tolls after the legal remit had expired. It runs to six pages so I can't copy it all here, but will e-mail it to anyone who is interested. Surprise, surprise, the scheme will go ahead almost unchanged despite a two to one majority of the comments being againt retaining the tolls. -
Land Cruiser Vs Shogun - part II 5 Apr 2002 (Forum)
My reasoning is that as £petrol=£diesel (+/- 3p) fuel costs may be the same for a 3.0/3.5 ltr Petrol and a 4.2 ltr diesel. What about the servicing and other running costs long term (I'd be keeping the car for a minimum of 3 years) - would there be much difference? ....and finally just to add the cat among the pidgeons .......has anyone had experience of LPG conversions for the Shogun 3.0/3.5 V6's ? -
Vauxhall Electronic Diesel Control 3 Feb 2002 (Forum)
But about 5 minutes in every hour it looses the plot and sounds horrible, just like the very first DI transits. Its running on all cylinders when this happens and there is no smoke. Its just as if whatever injection trickery they fitted electronically to cancel the noise that Direct injection diesels make has been teporarily turned off ! -
Oil pressure, or lack of! 30 Jul 2001 (Forum)
No joy there. So I decided to go the whole hog and change the oil pump. Besides the fact that the engine now runs a little smoother (the pick up of the old pump was a little clogged with carbon deposits) the low oil pressure light is still plaguing me! To me it seems like the high revs mean the pump's pulling more oil out of the sump and perhaps it isn't getting back down into the sump quick enough to be pumped up again. -
Zero HC and CO from LPG!!! 6 Jul 2001 (Forum)
I just thought many of you avid HJ guys would like to know that after many sleepless nights by Guy and David Lacey, ably assisted by Dave Mahoney, the prize-winning* Golf GTI of mine has achieved near zero CO and HC readings running on LPG - at £14.00 Sterling for over 11 gallons!!!!!! Roll on petrol duty - LPG is here to stay. (Guy LOVES Duty Escalator!!!!!) BTW - my HC reading was 1000% less than that coming out of Dave Mahoney's fast as ***k BMW M5 although the Golf has only a third of the power........maybe good old petrol has a use!!!!!!
