Musings - Freedom is not an illusion - the biro 21 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Or do we still reach out with withered hands for the psychological inkpot of youth and the little wooden shaft, pen and nib? Freedom may seem at times an illusion - but it`s expressed best by a biro. oilrag -

Repairing cars in this recession. 5 Oct 2008 (Forum)
Obviously the newer computerised everything cars will be almost impossible to fix without the use and knowledge of very complex equipment, will we see a renewed demand for those superb easy to work on a well designed cars of 80's/90's, carina/corolla/primera/cavalier/405/loads more contenders. Are all those parts available any more, like most here i've been enjoying the more favourable economy and have run the types of vehicles i only dreamed of 25 years ago, so i'm out of touch, but i wonder if we might be going to find out soon. -
Overtakers, what reaction? 6 Sep 2008 (Forum)
I'm not doing quite the 40mph pedant, i'm in the words of my very competent HGV trainer 'maintaining normal progress', anyway i spy in the mirror a van overtaking me, he's left it a little late, so i ease the truck over close to the n/s verge to give him some room, no probs he's by without drama and flashes a thankyou..so far so good. But as is nearly always the case, the driver(s) coming the other way maintain there speed and trajectory, hugging the crown of the road, what this achieves i don't get, to be fair there wasn't the flashing headlamps and hand signs that sometimes accompany a late overtaker, but no attempt to give a little room either. -

Advice re:selling my BMW at auction 2 Feb 2007 (Forum)
I live quite close to a Manheim Auctions site (Gloucester) and although they are mainly lcv they do have a Saturday sale for cars (dealer p/ex,trade, & private). The online Glass?s valuation puts the car at £2780 average condition with 150k miles (it won?t value over this mileage) as a trade in to a dealer when buying another car. Ok ? finally! ? the questions: 1)- Does anyone have any idea what price I could expect to get in an auction ? -
C-Class: Diesel & Petrol 18 Jan 2007 (Forum)
The Kompressor engine had that nice low down grunt, from it seemed, about 800-1000rpm. Once moving, say fast A-road or NSL dual carraigeway, it was no contest, the CDI 's 'stomp' with 295ft/lbs @~2200rpm makes overtaking much safer & seemigly unaffected by passenger number or load. The Kompressor needed much more 'planning' in similar situations, to the extent that I was nearly 'caught out' once or twice initially Handling: Kompressor was much nicer (both shod with 16in 205/55's btw): without that heavy (old) 5-cylinder diesel lump, it was keener to turn-in (waited years to use that expression!) -
Oh so *that's* what the BMW badge means 15 Jul 2004 (Forum)
Just swapped a 1997 Jap import Honda Prelude Type-S for a 1996 BMW 528iSE and I have to say, I'm very impressed. (It was a free swap, no money changed hands.) Having never driven or even been in a decent, modern BMW before, I'd always wondered what the fuss was about, but now I've got one, it all makes sense. -
Changing Times 8 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Having travelled many times to the Czech Republic in the past six years, it struck me over our Christmas holiday trip how much the mix of metal has changed in that time, and with this, a shift of attitude towards car ownership. Originally, nearly every car in SWMBO\'s backwater home town was a beat up, ancient, rear engined Skoda, the odd Favorit or Lada, or one of the few Japs on the road. Average age? A lot. Now, in her town alone, there are any number of Threes and Fives, just about any VAG offering you care to name (including a W12 six litre A8 as well as the expected Fabias and Octavias), the odd Merc, more and more Hondas and Nissans, and a few Volvo XC70s. -
Top Gear team switch lanes 20 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I know users of this forum have been looking forward to its demise as there are countless threads on this topic in the archives, I know I have. It really doesn?t cut the mustard when compared to Channel 4's Driven series - this Thursday's offerings were particularly dire. This article from the BBC site will put everybody's mind at rest. I'm pleased to see that Quentin Willson will be back. What do you think?
