BCA: Moving cars with forklifts ! ? 13 Nov 2002 (Forum)
It must damage exhausts and other pipe work underneath the car.On one car in particular the side skirting was flexing so much it must have been close to snapping (it may explain why i often see 156's with cracked sideskirts at auctions....?). Maybe i'm over reacting but it seems a daft way to move perfectly driveable cars. I will be taking a closer look underneath future potential purchases at auctions. -
load restraint for Focus estate 4 Nov 2002 (Forum)
Alternatively has anyone used one of the tubular metal things from Argos or Index? They are meant for keeping dog(s) in the back of the car but I guess they should work OK with a few sacks of leaves and the like. Thanks in advance. Floyd -
Why are Japanese cars more reliable? 3 Nov 2002 (Forum)
...better component design? ........what? Or, on the other hand is this just a "modern myth", perpetuated since the 70's, when you could argue that all of the above factors, were in indeed true? Now, I know that there are going to be backroomers with very reliable non-jap cars (myself included), also very unreliable jap cars, who may not necessarily agree with this theory. -
Passat 20VT 1 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I currently have a TT so I know all about the engine, which is a cracker once you get used to the lag. There seems to be SE, Sport and S versions, anyone know the differences? and which would you recommend. How many miles do you think the 20VT will remain tight for? I am guessing 140-150K? I know the Mody is cheaper but I feel the Passat will be easier to sell on. -
Pet names for cars 18 Aug 2002 (Forum)

getting finer injection spray 12 May 2002 (Forum)
I might be doing myself out of a potential patent application here, but what do you think of this idea. Vibration is used to speed up certain processes, in fact it has it`s own name of sonochemistry. Now ever higher injection pressures are used to obtain better combustion more power and lower emissions, eg diesel engines with common rail and unit injector pumpe duse technology. -

Unfortunately twenty quid cracked it, so there will be lots more of what step-d calls teething problems with Ronald for you good guys to solve. Thanks again for all your help. Colin S -
'Over drive 'v' 5 or 6 speed boxes 27 Feb 2002 (Forum)
At what point does the number of gears cause more problems, do cars really need 6 speed boxes ? I know that HGVs have 8 or 16 speeds, but that?s for the heavy loads that they carry. Thanks again. Alex -
Early Rover 214 injection 22 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Can anyone please advise, firstly which injection system this is (Rover-Honda?) and secondly of any good tune up agent or garage near S Bucks which would be able to help. Many Thanks. -
Focus for Accord 21 Feb 2002 (Forum)
Well I'm still in the process of finding the right used Accord to trade in my Focus for, and managed to find a suitable candidate at a Honda dealer:- '98-S Accord 2.0ES Auto black 38k 1-owner £9995 Got a part-ex valuation from said dealer for my current steed:- '99-V Focus 2.0 Ghia 5-dr black 20k 3-owners (don't ask!) £6500 Now is it me or is this dealer trying his hardest to utterly con me? -
Golf Mk 3 keys 4 Feb 2002 (Forum)
The dealer then orders the key. Once it has arrived they require the car for another 1/2 day to "progamme" the key(s). So, 2 visits (mon to fri only of course) and a bill of £40 for the key plus 1/2 hr labour for programming. The service receptionist was very cheerful about it all - lucky you don't have a FIAT sir, it would cost you £1,000. -
pug 206 woes 27 Jan 2002 (Forum)
A girly friend of mine has a Met blue 98 S Pug 206 LX 3dr with air. She over-expended herself to buy the thing and can't really afford to run it. So now it is playing up bad (out of warranty in July) and she can't afford to fix it. A mechanic friend has looked at it and he says it is only running on 3 cylinders and she is complaining of loss of power. -
Installing stereo system from scratch 22 Jan 2002 (Forum)
Could anyone point me in the right direction to being able to wire it up from scratch by myself (I can't afford to get it fitted) and what wires/connectors I need to do this. I am ready to buy a CD tuner head unit, two 4" cones, and two 6x9's (to be put in a box in the boot), I can understand the basic principals in doing all of this but I just want to find out if there is anything in particular I really need to watch for or do. I KNOW that this can be done, I just need a push in the right direction :) Any help is appreciated... -
Honda Civic or similar 7 Jan 2002 (Forum)
It's high mileage at 73K, but has been regualarly dealer serviced every 12,000 miles. Apart from some very minor damage at the n/s rear corner, it looks OK. It's priced at about £4,900 and we're planning a test drive tomorrow. Overall, and bearing in mind it's my son's cash, not mine, any ideas on whether we're looking at a decent deal or a pup? -
Type R...? 12 Nov 2001 (Forum)
I test drove the Scooby WRX (with ppp) and there's sod all in it performance wise. Just 8k in my pocket....... :-) There's no other alternative is there? Cooper S maybe... Never bought a new car before so it's all a bit strange.... Looks like a "bargain" though, I seem to remember the Sierra Cosworth being about £24k ten years ago and that had the same power output! -
Toyota Picnic value 15 Oct 2001 (Forum)
I am looking to buy my Picnic from Leaseplan but I get the feeling they over value the cars compared to what a dealer would charge for one, or what it would fetch at auction. It is a Jan 98 S plate GLS Auto with CD 2.0 petrol, Met paint, 60K miles, FSH of course, and it has not been in any accidents or shunts. Windscreen has a few chips out of it, and there are a few stone chips on the body. -
Aftermarket Turbo Bits 21 Jun 2001 (Forum)
The only consideration is that if it will fit under a Fiesta bonnet, then it will fit the kit. Will it achieve the same surge as my XUDT after the surgery, or be several 100's down the pan? I have seen adverts for such modifications but am sceptical to their effect. Anyone any comments? Simon -
Audi A6 - any comments? 31 May 2001 (Forum)
I do about 25,000 miles a year, a 50-50 mix of cross-country & motorway including long continental trips. To be honest, the favourite is a Saab 9-5 3.0TiD estate (I can wait!), but on paper the A6's credentials look good. -
Fiesta Cylinder Head 6 May 2001 (Forum)
Hi , My wife`s 1986D Fiesta 1.1 looks as though the Head Gasket has blown , so I`ve got to remove the cylinder head. I can do this either by removing the manifold from the head ( 6 x rusted nuts) OR by undoing the 2 rusted nuts securing the exhaust to the manifold , and removing the head complete with the manifold attached. -
