  • Ford Mondeo TDCI - DPF and Service Oil Warning advice 9 Oct 2012 (Forum)
My belief is that this is nonsense. Some DPF's have fluid, but it shouldn't be changed until at least 37500 miles anyway. My belief is that this engine's DPF doesn't have fluid, but injects Diesel into the oil/exhaust (I'm not claiming to be an expert!) to aid the combustion needed for regeneration.
  • VW Golf mark VI 1.6 TDi (2009, Diesel) - Which oil for top-up ? 18 Mar 2014 (Forum)
The car is due for a service in May. But I have noticed the oil level is on the lowest notch as indicated by the stick.  I would like to do a top up - and then in May I can get a filter+oil change done together. Just two questions:   1. I'm a bit confused - web searches seem to suggest the 5W-30 as best option.
  • Which oil spec to use in VW TDi engines? 25 Apr 2005 (Forum)
I've just bought an '01 VW polo 1.9 tdi (90bhp). It has a full vw history and was serviced just before I bought it, but the oil doesn't look too clean so I though I'd change the oil and filter but am unsure of which grade/spec of oil to use as it's my first diesel car. I'll use a genuine filter after reading earlier posts on the topic.
  • Oil overfill, should I worry ? 23 Dec 2004 (Forum)
Hi, I've recently had an oil change done at National Tyres & Autocare, and they seem to overfill it slightly. I know what the consequences could be of oil overfill but I just wonder if the amount is enough to cause any problems (I personally think unlikely, but what's your opinion).
  • Burning oil 6 Oct 2003 (Forum)
At what level is oil consumption considered excessive in a fairly new vehicle ??? I raise this question as my sons BMW 330Ci, with only 20k miles from new, is burning a litre of oil every 2k miles, which quite frankly, I consider is totally unacceptable.
  • Seat Alhambra Diesel Fault Code 21 Nov 2002 (Forum)
I put this back on (assuming it was the wire to the oil pressure switch) but that changed nothing. If the vehicle has been recently running, the oil lamp doesn't flash. I suspect that the oil switch has developed a fault, and that this is some kind of early warning.
  • Volkswagen Transporter - Marine Diesel engine oil for van use 4 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Maybe the detergent content is quite high, but after a couple of low mileage oil changes & sump flushes with it..?
  • Ford Escort (1993 - 2000) - 00 1.8 Oil capacity for Escort Van 18 Oct 2008 (Forum)
It's a 2000 model on a W plate, it is a 1.8 diesel (the non-turbo version). I want to give it a quick service but am struggling to find out the oil capacity. I could add a bit at a time I guess and keep checking the dipstick but if anyone knows how much it should take when oil and filter are changed it'd be much appreciated. Cheers
  • Oil, ambient temp. 23 Aug 2006 (Forum)
Can't really think of how to title it, but when you're doing an oil change in your car do you actually read the little chart thing in the manual where it tells you what oil is suitable for what temperature, or do you just go for the broadest range multigrade you can find?
  • Mondeo Oil Filter Difficult to remove 6 May 2004 (Forum)
Have just changed the oil and filter on my 2001 new shape Mondeo. The filter is the one which you unscrew and replace the inner paper mesh bit. I had no end of trouble in getting it off the car as it was on so tight.
  • Synthetic Gearbox Oil 2 Dec 2003 (Forum)
Folks, Would list members replace mineral gear oil with synthetic? Any noise suppresion/leakage issues? The XM at 76K is probably due a change. The wheel bearing noise I mentioned some time back sounds more like a very slight gear box noise. So slight that my local Citroen indie dismissed it as \"not something to worry about\".
  • Nissan Almera - Cam Chain on Nissan Almera 53 21 Nov 2014 (Forum)
My Nissan Almera has started to make a noise and I have been told by a local mechanic that the chain is loose. He has said that it could cost £400-£500 to replace but that an oil and filter change might help. The noise is intermitant and only when the car is cold, there are no warning lights coming on on the dash. Is it safe to continue drivining as it is and cold the oil and filter change help.
  • Mercedes C220 CDI 2007 (W203) - Merc C220 Oil Pump Failure 30 Aug 2014 (Forum)
3 weeks ago my C220 was serviced, including oil change & oil filter.  Nothing out of the ordinary was found at the time.  2 days ago the car broke down when being driven at low speed, with a screeching noise, severe loss of power and firm brake pedal.
  • Vauxhall Astra 1.7 D - Worth Spending Money Servicing ? 6 Nov 2024 (Forum)
Local independent garage ( with good reviews ) say online it’s £270 for a major service. Sister in law said it needs an oil change and has never changed the anti freeze or brake fluid in three years. The levels look ok to me though. I do a 58 mile trip to work each day to work. Shall I get a service or just get the oil changed?
  • BMW 5 Series E39, 530d auto - Refuses to change gear if i full throttle 11 Nov 2012 (Forum)
I have noticed my traction control light is on and one day i full throttled the car it refused to change gear, could this be the gearbox or a simple oil change of the gear box?
  • Yamaha Vmax 125cc Scooter - Burst of smoke on startup 3 Jul 2024 (Forum)
I'm thinking oil seepage via worn valve guides and/or piston rings at rest, perhaps aggravated by it actually having a full complement of oil after I changed it. I used Mobil 4T (10W40 IIRC) which should be OK quality and isn't expensive, so probably not fake..
  • OAP ZX TD Problem 5 Jul 2001 (Forum)
There is a significant vibration coming from the front wheels which is road speed related (as opposed to engine speed). I've done the obvious (wheel balance, changed both driveshafts and N/s front wheel bearing without improvement). Before I change the other bearing any ideas? Second guessing at the answer is a gearbox failure resulting in vibration likely (no metallic pieces in drained g/box oil)?
  • citroen service intervals ????? 30 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Got an s reg xsara, how long over a service interval is ok regarding oil filters etc. How many miles over would be ok 100 1000 5000miles???? xsaras need 12500 between service. may just go to national 4 a cheap oil change
  • Extended Service Intervals 11 Jun 2004 (Forum)
With the current trend towards long service intervals, I see many people extolling the virtues of changing oil and filter at 6000 miles. What is this figure based on? Are modern engine oils only good for 6000 miles, after which they deteriorate rapidly, or is it a throwback to the dark ages? Andy
