  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 2000 (v reg) HDi - Ignition Problems 23 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Reading on various forums it appers that the ignition relay is the problem most of the time could anyone tell me its location? Im no mechanic but in the past on some old XR Sierra's when the relay went running a wire from the battery to the pump allowed it to start is this safe to do just as a test?
  • Volkswagen Passat (2001 - 2005) - 01 1.9TDi -intermittent error message 17 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I have had it on a diagnostic computer but it cannot diagnose fault. The fault occurs about once a week but does not appear to affect the running of the car. The garage owner said that only when the car will not go or the power reduces to the extent that the car will only do 30-40 mph will he be able to pin point the fault-he believes that it is a loose sensor causing the problem.
  • Route through Central London, (thanks to Ken) 16 Feb 2008 (Forum)
I always found this unfair for a small car based van that is dwarfed by cars around it, such as the new mega size Mondeo. It now seems like justice has been done for my thrift in running this small vehicle and engine and it feels like Ken has given me the `Keys to the City` for cutting straight across on route to Dover and the continent. But its been 28 years and I assume there have been some changes...
  • Audi A3 + S3 (2001 - 2003) - 2001 1.8T check engine light with faults codes 29 Jan 2008 (Forum)
My parents have an A3 as above which has the check engine light on, although it seems to be running OK. I have used VAGCOM which has listed the following fault codes: 17705 - Pressure Drop between Turbo and Throttle Valve (check D.V.!) P1297 - 35-00 - - 17545 - Fuel Trim: Bank 1 (Add): System too Rich P1137 - 35-00 - - The DV has been replaced along with all 4 coil packs and the air mass meter (MAF).
  • Volkswagen Polo (1981 - 1991) - 1990 CL Coupe - Gear problems 19 Jan 2008 (Forum)
Hey! I have a 1990 VW Polo CL Coupe which I have recently purchased. Runs really well, no problems with the engine. Recently however the gearbox/gearchange mechanism has been giving me problems. The gears started to have trouble getting in (first and second especially), this got worse and worse as I drove along.

  • Sussex Police - Operation Crackdown 23 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Have seen that Sussex Police are running Operation Crackdown. http://www.operationcrackdown.org/ You can report abandoned vehicles through the website which is good, but you can also report anti-social driving , which among other things, they class as speeding, thoughtless or reckless driving, tailgating, using a mobile phone whilst driving or driving a vehicle which looks to be in an unsafe condition.
  • Citroen Xsara (1997 - 2004) - HDi Engine not switching off with key 12 Nov 2007 (Forum)
It started fine but when I arrived at work after a leisurely 12 mile drive, the engine refused to switch off with the ignition key!!! When I turned the key to the usual off position, the engine kept running at a rough idle. All the usual lights were illuminated in the dashboard when this was happening. The only way of killing it was to hold the foot brake and let out the clutch while the car was in gear.
  • Ford KA, KA2, KA3 (1996 - 2008) - ka heater speed fan resistor 10 Nov 2007 (Forum)
    Seeing as the forum search seems a bit vague these days i thought i would let anybody who runs a ka to be aware that the heater resistor located in front of the passengers feet tend to get hot and burn out,ok in normal turn of events you undo the one philips screw pull it out and replace it,but,the one i did today with the proper resistor pack still attached had obviously got so hot probably previously to the new pack being fitted that the cables had actually all burnt and the protective coating unsleaved itself,no fuses had blown but a fire waiting to happen me thinks,definately worth a check if you have one of these in the family {resister typo in header amended}
  • Renault Clio II (1998 - 2001) - 1.6 8v - uneven idle / hunting ? 7 Nov 2007 (Forum)
Hello All, Wife's 1.6 8v Clio RXE manual, drives fine (excellent actually) though idles at about 1200rpm and sometimes initially, when first coming to a stop, hunts between 1200 and 1500rpm. CTS issues can effect idling though it starts / runs fine otherwise whether cold or hot so I dont think it is CTS related. Had two minor idle related problems before: 1/ Around early 2002 low idle and occasional cutting out was initially diagnosed as idle control stepper motor though cured by using Shell/BP rather than Tesco fuel. 2/ Around mid 2006 lumpy idle cured by cleaning crank position sensor on top of gearbox.
  • Audi A4 B7 (2005 - 2008) - 2.0 TDI 140 engine - fuel consumption 5 Nov 2007 (Forum)
My car has now done 10.5K miles and compared to my old TDI 130 the fuel consumptions is still fairly unexciting. I get 44-45 MPG on a motorway run if I'm really gentle, whereas the old TDI 130 on the same journeys would do 50-52 mpg. The thing that seems strange to me is talking to A3 and Passat drivers with the same engine, they seem to have never had issues with fuel consumption.
  • Vauxhall Corsa C (2000 - 2006) - 2001 1.4 SRi - steering wheel wobble / loose 26 Oct 2007 (Forum)
Hi guys, i have a corsa SRi 1.4i on a 2001 plate {Added to subject header as will be seen there before opening the post} I have noticed that the steering wheel has a bit of play in it, ie if you are stationary with the engine running you can turn it a fraction left and right and it feels loose - not friction. Also if you are travelling over rough roads or over speed ramps it also feels loose and tends to rattle a bit. The wife has said she kerbed it (only going slowly she says) so i have had the tracking and checked and reset as it was out but it's still looseness (if thats a word) is still there.

  • Audi A4 (1995 - 2000) - Wipers/Indicators/heater fan don't work 1 Oct 2007 (Forum)
On my 1996 1.8 petrol Audi A4 the wipers/Indicators/heater fan don't work when the engine is running. They work fine when the engine is off (and ignition on). Somtimes I can make them work by putting my hand in the fusebox/relays area and waggling things around a bit. I've taken each relay out in turn and cleaned the connections.
  • Tyre Damage - who decides how much is too much? 24 Sep 2007 (Forum)
It was one of the digital pumps which said I had something like 6lbs in. Anyway. tyre guy takes the tyre off and shows me some scuffing inside the tyre wall caused by running on next to flat. I am inclined to err on the side of caution on tyres, even though it looked very little damage to my layman's eye, so I had him put a new one on, but what if I had said no- please repair it and re-fit?
  • Peugeot 307 (2001 - 2007) - HDI 90 Coolant warning lights keep coming on 22 Sep 2007 (Forum)
There appears to be absolutely nothing wrong with it, the header tank level is normal, no steam, no water loss, the electric fan (s) are tripped in , radiator and pipes all feel fine. Car restarts fine sometimes it will run for a while before doing it again sometimes it does it straight away. Yesterday I drove 40 miles no problem, and halfway back it did it again. I presume some sort of sensor , but grateful for any help, Kind regards
  • Friday night traffic in the Smoke 10 Sep 2007 (Forum)
Apart from the road works and other excavations and diversions caused by the still uncompleted Channel Tunnel terminal, the delays were of course exacerbated by the systematic attempts that have been made in recent years to sabotage and hamper traffic flow in London. To be in the middle of one of these modern jams, with people desperately trying to find rat-runs that no longer exist, is a truly depressing experience. Even the sight of a lot of cyclists - it must be tempting to become one if you can be bothered - did nothing to lift the spirits. And the car traffic was behaving in a very depressed way, like a million St John's Wood Mercedes drivers.

  • 99 Merc C220 - Replacing a panel light 5 Aug 2007 (Forum)
Hi, I am new to this page. I owned a T reg. Mercedes C220 CDI and it has been running very well. Recently, the lighting on the digital clock inside the rev. counter went out in the day time. At night, when the side/head lights were on, it is still 'out'. The digital clock is still working.
  • Bump starting problem 3 Aug 2007 (Forum)
They were pushing it right across the car park to where they had an extension lead and battery charger, and being a generous soul I offered to help push it for a bump start. The battery wasn't completely dead (dash lights came on etc), but the engine would only run for a second or two and then stopped. It was a newish Clio with a petrol engine, and I was stumped as to why the engine kept stopping as my assumption is that the alternator easily provides enough juice at tickover to charge the battery and generate enough power to deliver regular sparks.
