99 Merc C220 - Replacing a panel light - 7810 red
Hi, I am new to this page. I owned a T reg. Mercedes C220 CDI and it has been running very well.

Recently, the lighting on the digital clock inside the rev. counter went out in the day time. At night, when the side/head lights were on, it is still 'out'. The digital clock is still working. I guessed it is the 'bulb' behind it. However, I do not know if it is lit by fibre optics or conventional light bulb?

I managed to take the panel underneath the steering column off. I still cannot see or feel what is behind and what I am looking for. Can anyone help please? I am at this stage do not incline to take the car to the garage and pay obscene labour charge for replacing a light bulb.

Any hint will be most welcome.

The only way to access the instrument panel bulbs is to pull out the dash pod.It is only a push fit in the dashboard but can be a bit tricky to release .It is very easy to damage the plastic surround of the pod.Go to someone who has the M/B release "hooks".Also with the pod out ,I would suggest that all the illumination bulbs are replaced.hth

Thank you for that. Do you know how many 'hooks' there are around the pod? Do I need to remove the steering wheel?

Steering wheel stays where it is.The hooks (pullers) are the tools reqd to release the pod. They can be bought from a M/B dealer for about £15.

Thank you for that. I shall give it a go.

Thank you for that again. I managed to run an old credit catd along the edge on the front of the instrument panel. There is nothing behind on the top. There are 2 obstructions along the bottom edge about 5cm from the end. I then run my hand to the back of the panel and can feel something metallic and quite sharp. I shall persevere and try again without breaking anything.

I also put a mirror underneath the panel but I cannot see anything.

You need at least a £5k credit limit on the card for it to work on this job.

Thank you. Good job it was an OLD credit card. It got 'chewed up' quite well. The top of the pod is beginning to budge !

I rang my local Mecedes scrap merchant asking to see an instrument panel so that I could have an idea of what to look out for. The local scrap merchant is 'Mercman' and he offered to take my panel out free of charge since he had the right 'tool'. I took my car to him and it was a metter of seconds with the right tool and he got it out for me. Replacing the bulb was easy.
