  • Advice please - large car, small budget 1 Sep 2008 (Forum)
Current cars are an L reg petrol Escort and an M reg Peugeot 306 diesel - plan is to replace the Escort and keep the Peugeot, as I have a long commute for work, and having just one car may be difficult as I'm often away from home and local public transport varies between unreliable and non-existent Total budget will be £2500 plus whatever we can get for the Escort (not much I suspect, short MOT, below average condition). So - any recommendations? We're after something reliable and cheap to run, and having had the Peugeot something that's good to drive. I've nothing in mind at the moment - open to suggestions.
  • I wondered lonely as a cloud, past ugly motors.... 21 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Six, nay, eight, cylinders roar as Egbert peers, over the door Air-con on, to help survive bacteria out, to grow and thrive A road hump shunts and shakes the liver and Egberts knees are all aquiver The Wobble Master lurches on But, `t schools runs over and the con Cos, small is good and big is bad you know it is, it`s not a fad So snort and pomp and gloat at leisure till, Gordon hits you with his measure. (Inspired by looking around a couple of main dealers yesterday) ;)
  • Audi A4 (1995 - 2000) - 98 2.5 white smoke while driving fine on start-up 20 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Audi A4 2.5 Tdi that is pumping out white smoke while driving, nothing on start up (and no problems starting), some smoke idling and normal driving, but excessive smoke if you floor it, only noticed it after a run up to 80mph filtering onto an A road and then stopping at a set of lights after a mile or so (lots of white smoke!). Have a read-out taken in front of me that only flags an ABS rear sensor (light is on) and nothing else.
  • In a perfect world. Which car ? 12 Aug 2008 (Forum)
It must therefore fit with your real lifestyle. You will be responsible for its upkeep, fuel, insurance, tax, servicing, repairs and other running costs during that period. What would you choose and why ? Remember, one car only, to be used daily. I think, though I will almost certainly change my mind several times, that mine might be a current BMW 535d Touring with all the toys.
  • Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - 03 1.4 engine light - why ? 8 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Does anyone know if this test is the same than the one where they hook it up to some sort of computer? the car runs fine, butI noticed that it gets really hot at the passengers foot compartment. maybe thats normal. i also noticed doing the dashboard test that when it says gage, the fuel one goes all the way up but the other dials don't budge, could they be stuck????
  • Honda Accord Tourer (2003 - 2008) - 06 2.2 CTDi Starting problems 8 Aug 2008 (Forum)
When I turn they key the engine turns over an fails to start. It sometimes takes 4 attempts before it starts. Other times it starts first go. Once started it runs fine. I have noticed that when it doesn't start the yellow (glow plug?) light to the right of the handbrake light does not come on when you turn the key. When the light does come on the car starts.
  • Police driving over the speed limit 3 Aug 2008 (Forum)
Up the road is a police house which serves as a local traffic division. 9 times out of ten whenever I see a battenburg being driven, and it is not on a shout (no blues and two's) the car is clearly going faster than 30. Now I know the driver's receive extensive training etc but a kid running out in front of them can still happen at any time with no warning and no amount of training can cover all situations. My point is, what gives plod the right to drive over the limit whilst the rest of us by law have to stick to 29.9mph?
  • Ford Focus II (2004 - 2007) - 1.6 Easy cure for poor fuel consumption ? 2 Aug 2008 (Forum)
After pumping them to the correct 31/33 psi, the fuel consumption has improved to 38mpg on a 200 mile run - an acceptable figure for a tight engine in winter, I think. I wouldn't have thought wrong tyre pressures would make such a difference, but it's a bit worrying that a Ford main dealer can't get something as simple as this right on a pre-delivery check
  • Hyundai Trajet MPV (2000 - 2008) - 04 2000 Engine will not start 18 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Diesel Trajet Automatic, 35,000 miles, FHSH and been very reliable so far. Filled up with biodiesel about two weeks ago and the car has been running very well. This morning, the car started OK and idled OK, but had no power. It stopped and was reluctant to start. After several attempts and getting about half a mile from home I rang the AA.
  • Ford Focus (1998 - 2004) - 98 1.8 Unable to start car bought from auction 1 Jul 2008 (Forum)
Hi all, I have just purchased a non-running Focus 1.8 petrol from auction. I have two key's for the car and although I can omit dash lights with either key, the engine wont turn over. I can manually excite the starter from bridging the positive bat term over to the ignition wire on the solonoid (sp).
  • Suction mounted w/screen camera holder. 22 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Been playing with one of these new small Flip Video cameras Seems the ideal camera to satisfy my long held desire to have a cheap simple video of the road ahead, certainly gives a good enough picture of the road ahead to give "police, camera, action" a run for its money Now it will only record an hours worth, but the buttons are mega simple and ideal for control while driving, would be easy to reset every hour Now all I need is a suction cup for the screen a la GPS but with a camera tripod mount to hold this small camera, and idea where to get one?
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 94 1.4 Petrol, possible fuel pump issues 20 Jun 2008 (Forum)
Hi, Just wondering if anyone can help, my pug won't start even though the engine turns over and everything electrical seems fine. I opened the top of the injector unit, where while running you can see fuel going into the intake. While a friend fired the engine I could see no fuel going down :( Although this might not be fuel pump I am not ruling it out! Also I have checked the fuses and they all seem fine.
  • Peugeot - 2000 1.9TD Boxer Van jumps out of 5th gear 30 May 2008 (Forum)
Does it make more sense to fit a recon box or ask the local specialist to repair the box? Camper vans do my head in. They are built onto cheap chassis that are designed to run up 150,000 miles in 3 years commercially, then be sold for peanuts at auction. However, the campervan fraternity expect them to cope with tiny miles over many years and are then surprised that they deteriorate faster than cars.
  • Citroen XM (1990 - 2000) - 1997 2.5 new belt and injectors - new noises! 29 May 2008 (Forum)
The injector nozzles were replaced, and I've now got an interesting "London Taxi"-style classic diesel knock below 1500rpm. It runs fine and the noise disappears above 1500-1750rpm. Yes, the timing is correct... :-) I'm wondering if refurbished injectors (with new springs?) and a new belt (tensioned correctly) have set up an odd resonance.
  • ChipsAway etc in Woking area 13 May 2008 (Forum)
Doesn't look nice at all on a dark green car :-) As the car is approaching 8th birthday I don't think the resale values matter a lot and I'm also hoping to run it for another couple of years. Thanks Kostic
  • BMW 3-Series E46 (1998 - 2005) - 04, Puddle in footwell. 10 Apr 2008 (Forum)
How do I go about sorting this? Any known weakspots I should check? Or is the only option to get the missus to hold a running hose over the car until I see some water appearing (which might be quite a while...)? Thanks
  • Honda Accord UK (2003 - 2008) - 04 petrol engine over revving after month standing 31 Mar 2008 (Forum)
My 2004 Honda Accord I have not used for a month, and today polished it up, jump started it and got the cobwebs out. (Been running round in a Corolla). On the Accord I thoroughly warmed it up, and took it for a 2 mile spin. Something is seriously wrong! When idling it goes vroom, to 3000 RPM like one had dipped the gas pedal, falls too 1000 naturally as soon as it gets there it happens again.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 2004 TDCi 130 - Vapour/Haze 12 Mar 2008 (Forum)
It is not possible to see the source of the leak, but it is front of engine rising vertically just left of the centre of the engine. No real smell to the vapour. It is not constant and is most noticeable in the cold after motorway run. Car has done 52k miles. Underside of engine shows limited amount of oil/liquid staining no drips! Any clues and should I worry (especially as Ford can't see a problem?).
  • Peugeot 106 (1991 - 2002) - 1998, 1.5, diesel, wont start! 3 Mar 2008 (Forum)
I do not know how the fuel switch works, as I have pressed but button keeps popping up. Tried to start it while holding the button, but no luck. Now running out of ideas. Cannot afford to take it to Peugeot. Please someone help Nash
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 2001 DTI No power on start up or in acceleration? 24 Feb 2008 (Forum)
Sometimes I have to pull over to allow cars behind to pass as it takes a while to reach 30 mph!! After a few moments driving it bursts back into life. If I leave the car running for a couple of minutes however this problem is non existent and I can drive away as normal. There are no faults displaying on the dash.Is this a common fault and is there a remedy or is it a number of faults and a costly exercise to eliminate each one?
