  • Any - How far diesels have come in the past 30-odd years 16 Mar 2013 (Forum)
Here are the road test figures obtained by Motor magazine during its 1975 test of a Mercedes 240D (2.4 litre normally-aspirated 4-cylinder, 65bhp / 101 ft-lb) Maximum speed:  84.4mph 0 - 60mph:  21.8 seconds 40 - 60mph in 4th gear:  14.5 seconds Economy during test:  26.7mpg   Was diesel fuel THAT much cheaper in the 70s to justify the sluggishness and unremarkable economy?
  • Fifth Gear: 'cooking' versus premium diesel 14 Oct 2011 (Forum)
This passed me by at the time, so apologies if it's been covered before:  here's a link to Fifth Gear's test of V-Power and Ultimate diesel versus ordinary supermarket stuff, using a newish Citroen C5 2.2 as the testbed (4 minute video clip). Both the premium fuels gave 161bhp compared with 155 on the ordinary stuff.  What WAS upsetting was that V-Power and Ultimate were 100.9 pence per litre at the time  :-/

  • pug 405 diesel 17 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Hi folks, I'm new here and hope that some of you technical geniuses can give me some advice! I have a 180,000mile non turbo 1.9 diesel 405 and I ve noticed a lot of free play on the throttle spindle (Lucas pump) It moves about an inch before the engine speed increases and welly appears to be even less than usual. fuel consumption has also dropped into the 30s, is it time for a new pump?
  • turbo diesel air filter 19 May 2006 (Forum)
This resulted in a big drop in economy (45 down to 30 mpg) i just wondered if a filter like K&N would give a better air to fuel mix and better economy? just interested.
  • Astra Diesel (1999) 20 May 2003 (Forum)
Hi. Can anyone point me towards the thread about an air leak into the pump of the Vectra/Astra diesel? A friend's has just failed to start, and an air leak into the pump diagnosed. So far the garage has changed the fuel filter and all the leak-off pipes. It will start, and run, but not well. They have suggested a non-return valve in the pipe to the pump.
  • lack of power in citroen bx diesel 30 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Fuel consumption is fine, there's no loss of oil and it starts ok. Any ideas of what the problem is?

  • Ford Fiesta - Diesel vs Petrol 29 Apr 2015 (Forum)
Zetec Ecoboost 1.0T - £13595 Zetec Econetic 1.6 TDCi - £14995 £1400 difference. Assuming roughly 50MPG for the Petrol 60MPG for the Diesel I am looking at breaking even on fuel costs, again very roughly, in 7 years based on current average proces (£1.13 Petrol / £1.19). If I drop MPG of the Petrol to 45MPG and up the Diesel to 65MPG this reduces to break even around 3 year mark, assuming current fuel prices.

  • Ford Fiesta (2002 - 2008) - 2007 1.6 Fuel Pump Filter Priming ? 22 Feb 2009 (Forum)
I have a 2007 Ford Fiesta 1.6 Diesel Sportvan which has just covered 30,000 miles. I have just replaced the fuel pump filter (a large plastic box!). Unfortunately it will now not start. I assume that there is an air lock of some description as despite turning over a few times and turning the ignition on for a period also several times I am unable to hear any sign of fuel.

  • ? change diesel injectors (Fiat) 4 Oct 2005 (Forum)
I believe it may not be firing on one or more of the 5 cylinders for a brief time due to fuel starvation. The diesel filter was change only 6 weeks ago when the car was serviced and the glow plugs were changed last year. When the engine is started from cold there is some white to light grey smoke that disappears quickly.
  • Audi A6 smoke 17 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Honest John has made a comment in the past about fuel timing in these cars needing regular attention, which mine has not had. I have not gone to the bother of having the fuel timing looked at because I believe that poor fuel economy would be present if the timing wasn't correct: the mpg is as good as it has ever been - excellent.

Looking for a decent vehicle to do over 35,000+ miles a year that is both reliable and fuel efficient. I would be the only passenger mainly motorway driving, old car was a petrol 1.2 which was costing me tons on fuel so maybe a diesel. Advice on what maximum mileage I should be looking and age would be great total newbie!!
