You'd expect nothing less from an Octavia vRS with a turbo big enough to take it to nearly 230mph and brakes unsullied by servo assistance. Thankfully, stopping isn't such an issue on the high-speed bowl at Millbrook, but it did give us plenty of space to get Octavia's turbo up to speed, chiming in at heady 5000rpm means the power might not be exactly usable but you certainly get plenty of it. -

I’d love to say I’ve developed those skills further, but the truth of the matter is, I haven’t. I learned the basics – how to change oil, coolant, spark plugs, brake pads, filters, and also the dark art of how to apply chicken wire and body filler to hoodwink the local MoT tester, although the latter is not a skill worth bragging about. When it came to the heavier jobs, though, I’d call in support from Brian and Peter, our Triumph Stag-owning next door neighbour and the Land Rover nut across the road. Indeed, I didn’t really need to call on them, for if ever they saw my car with its bonnet up, they’d naturally migrate. -

I have now pulled it out of the shed and a taken it to a small local garage who purport to be specialists in classic cars and asked them to renew the battery, change all the fluids, free off anything that needed freeing off and overhaul the brakes. The bill came to about £4,000 with VAT. That was last autumn and I have just taxed it from the 1st April. Q1: I am now driving it again and find the brakes very spongy and lacking bight.

A very interesting highly modified late entry 1952 XK120 FHC with all round disc brakes and a 5-speed transmission estimated at £68,000 - £76,000 failed to sell at £60,000. A 1959 XK150 S DHC estimated at £65,000 - £85,000 sold for £85,000, but a rarer 1958 XK150 3.4S roadster estimated at £110,000 - £130,000 failed to sell to a top bid of £85,000.
