Golf Lost Steering Servo 24 Oct 2004 (Forum)
I returned to my car, MkIII Golf, on Friday and noticed the O/S/F wheel was in a puddle but assumed it was water. No such luck, as soon as I pulled away I realised I had no power steering so parked up and looked underneath. Yep a perforated high pressure pipe from the steering box to the N/S rack was to blame. -
Potholes and Road Safety 29 Mar 2004 (Forum)
Becuase if this they are more likely to rectify it (especially as we approach the end of the financial year when they have to spend money or lose it)\' \'Top idea. You can find your councils\'s number in the phonebook. Give them a buzz and ask for the highways department\' I am sure we are all aware of the many places where there are potholes and defective road surfaces, so if we all did something by making a phonecall, perhaps more would be done to make the roads a better place. -
Don't buy a Toyota - sorry ! 29 Oct 2003 (Forum)
Into Toyota Cambridge - a very helpful dealer, BTW, unlike the others I used, and they diagnosed a gearbox fault - probably worn bearing/s. Cost - £300 plus whatever is wrong with it as they have to strip the whole gearbox down. Letter to Toyota UK to see if they would help even in part, as, although out of warranty, the only reason the fault is there is because their dealers wouldn't fix it under warranty. -
Peugeot 406 Executive Turbo 22 May 2003 (Forum)
Any comments on reliability? What age would I be looking at getting for £3.5k or under at auction? 99T perhaps? I've seen S reg ones on Autotrader for as little as £3k. I'm told Peugeots figures are unreliable. Where can I find accurate, indepedant performance figures for the 406 range? Is it worth considering or should I just go back to the predictable but safe idea of a 1.9TD Xantia SX, on a S plate? -
Just done CBT! 18 May 2003 (Forum)
I had my CBT booked for today, as the weather had improved sufficiently (well, it was last week!). Of course, s**'s law dictates that it had to throw it down today, but that didn't spoil the fun. Despite the fact that it threw it down, and that I was wobbly as a weeble at low speeds, nothing could take away the fact that it was all really good fun. -
Disciplinary action - advice sought 31 Jan 2003 (Forum)
She served a customer in the queue who had already been rude to another member of staff and proceeded to the next. Suddenly the first customer started shouting and complaining about my wife\'s failure to pack her bag. My wife had never been told that bag packing was compulsory and had already started serving another customer. The truth is she panicked and didn\'t know what to do. Whatever she did, she thought one of the customers would be upset. -
Any economists out there?! 26 Oct 2001 (Forum)
There has been a number of recent emails highlighting the collapse in used car prices and I am grappling with this conundrum as to where it is all going to end?!!! 1. HJ?s comment that a lady looking at an £3k N reg 80k clio could have a had an 80k w reg at auctions 2. Mr GTI looking for £7k plus when in reality no one will buy it for more than £5500 3. Car are getting more durable in terms of finish and core mechanics but more complex and more expensive to fix as they get older 4. -
Skoda Yeti - My Yeti(s) 25 Mar 2018 (Forum)
The Cross Climates are again wearing evenly and are at 5mm, after 25 k miles. The car generally returns low 40's MPG (mid 30's in the depth of winter) and the remap (Shark stage 1) has had no discernible negative impact on fuel economy, despite boosting power and torque considerably. The in-car tech is now looking rather dated, but the DAB and Sat-nav have proved useful (and cheap to update) and a big (64 Gb) SD card carries enough music to keep all occupants entertained. -
I'm replacing my Renault Grand Modus soon - is it smart to stick with a diesel or swap to an electric car? 29 Oct 2019 (Ask HJ)
I've owned a Renault Grand Modus for the last 7years. I Iike the car very much, but it's showing it's age. I have £7000 - £10,000 to spend on a used car... -

SEAT Alhambra - Rejecting a vehicle SOGA refund 5 Aug 2014 (Forum)
Upon driving to work the next day I noticed the power fault again on a steep hill ( no engine lights but losing power almost like limp mode) also the air conditioning hasn't been fixed and neither has the dvd player. I spoke to the seller and asked for s refund and he has told me the fault had been fixed and was fine when test driven. I returned the car to him on the Friday (his earliest convenience) and again asked for a refund as I was rejecting the vehicle under SOGA which he refused as he couldn't find s fault. -
SEAT Altea (2004 - ) - Altea in Provence (Road Test) 8 Apr 2008 (Forum)
Does anyone have any idea what Europcar in France usually give out in this category? (Oh, and I did see a couple of Citroen C6's on the move - and the same number of DS's.) -
Risks buying certain 3yr old cars 24 May 2007 (Forum)
It has few problems and seems a reasonable bet at 3 years old. The other model seems to have taken over the role of the old modded Novas or Corsa`s of a decade or so ago however Its not a Vauxhall. This newish, large supermini is often bought brand new by 17yr olds who are getting their first car, courtesy of parents. so none of the suffering of personal saving, doing without things as a result applies. -
The Speed Camera Thread - Volume 15 5 Dec 2003 (Forum)
s PR manager, Philip Gwynne, in an e-mail: "Would I be right in thinking you?re a close-minded (sic) bigot who wouldn't know the truth if it bit him in the a***?" It seems that while North feels criminalised, others have sympathy. -
Site Adverts and Pop-ups 26 Aug 2003 (Forum)
If you haven\'t explored the rest of the site, then I encourage you to do so. This all takes a great deal of people\'s time, in particular HJ\'s. It also takes a fair amount of money. There are people who either do their work for free or at greatly reduced rates. People such as Stephen, Dave, Me and HJ himself. Adverts and pop-ups provide a source of revenue. -
Calling all engineers and web whizzos? 14 Oct 2002 (Forum)
A subsequent issue is that of the removal of the catalyst itself and the subsequent change of exhaust backpressure that may have a detrimental effect on engine longevity. What effect might this have on exhaust valve temperature? Whilst most interested in people?s opinions, I am also looking for research papers and test results, both lab-controlled and any owner?s experiences. Of course, much has been written about using UNLEADED in old LEADED-spec engines e.g. valve seat and ignition timing issues. -
Home insurance renewal cost 19 May 2025 (Forum)
I've had building & contents insurance with M&S (Aviva) for 5 years now.in the past two years it has gone up from £210.49 to £495.26 an increase of 135.6% I claimed in December 2023 for escape of water. A copper pipe hidden behind a false wall in the kitchen had split. -
vauxhall zafira b - MAF sensor replacement. 5 May 2025 (Forum)
I have replace the air filter and cleaned the MAF sensor with Liquid Moly cleaner. It has not helped though. Looking at live data from the ECU just gives 0's for the live MAF looking at car parts sites using my reg gives MAF sensors in housings which can't be right as the housing does not come off on my car. I know you can get replacement hoses, but I'm not sure how I would connect it to the brass piece in the first photo. -
Renault Austral - First Impressions 12 Aug 2023 (Forum)
So far, it’s quiet and comfortable, has 200ps and is doing c50mpg with a mixture of motorway and extra urban driving. It’s continuing Renault’s adoption of Android Automotive, so you just treat the centre screen as s tablet and give it voice commands after saying ‘Hey, Google’. Lots of toys to play with and updates to follow if anyone’s interested.
