  • Audi 80 E-reg, cat puzzle 18 Nov 2005 (Forum)
Any thoughts? Since the car is quite old I presume it doesn't have to have the cat fitted? cheers Rob
  • Will car prices tumble due to petrol.... 5 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I dont know about others, but I am cost conscious when changing the family car every three years.I dont have pots of dosh to spend, have domestic commitments as priority, and buy a reliable saloon thats in good condition and three years old from new. With petrol £1 per litre, there is a possibility that it could go to £1.50 ( so I am told in motoring mags).
  • Buying an Insurance wight off Help 6 Apr 2003 (Forum)
Hi All, I have recently opted out of my company are seem, and been thinking what car should I get, since I do around 25-35k miles PA. I have been playing with the idea of a 3 year old Volvo, but looked at my local Auto Trader and found some really good salvage cars - stolen and recovered or cat D classification insurance Wight off's.
  • New 2nd hand car 23 Oct 2002 (Forum)
ok, i'm sick of my 406, its problematic. i'm setting a budget of 9K-10K for a new car and i suspect i will probably own it for 5 years. I do about 10,000 mile pa and i don't like super mini's or medium sized cars, i want a bigger car like a 406. So what should i get, max of 30K on the clock and totally flawless reliability, i.e. nothing should be spent on the car in those 5 years apart from consumables (asking a lot i know) Undecided over diesel or petrol, and i must be proud of it.
  • Part exchange value after accident 15 Sep 2002 (Forum)
My car was severely rear ended and pushed into another car so it suffered damage at both ends. The driver of the car that hit us admitted liability and I have already had my excess refunded by her insurers.
  • Parking damage 30 Apr 2002 (Forum)
Wife parked in heath club parking area the other day - staff asked her to move her 6 week old car as a MALE driver was having problems getting out and had damaged his car against a post. She moved the car and he drove off - in her opinion he could have got a truck out and the staff said that he was not a good driver.
  • Bargain of the day 6 Jan 2025 (Forum)
Seems that the rear end has fallen out of the used EV market, particularly the Leaf so there are many stupidly cheap cars about. I can get a sensible mileage 4yr old big battery 62kwh example from Cinch for around £11k or a private sale 40kwh car for much less. It is tempting despite the £3k loss I’d take on the Merc.
  • various - car rental as a new driver 12 May 2023 (Forum)
I only passed my test a couple of months ago and I have been looking to rent a car to do a few road trips - something I obviously have missed out on for many years.   I noticed that virtually every rental company require at least one year of experience as a license holder (and some require you to be at least 25 years old).
  • Suzuki SX4 - Aircon woes 23 Sep 2021 (Forum)
He confirmed my diagnosis and quoted for the work. I'm happy to pay as I use my A/C all year round. I know the cars not worth much and the cost of repair is around a third of the cars value but i have no reason to  not believe this car will last at least another 5 years.  My wife thinks it's a waste of money on an old car what do other back roomers think?
  • No appeal of sub-£10k cars with VED of £500 ?? 12 Jul 2017 (Forum)
Hi, As some of you may know, I swapped my Jaguar XF 3L petrol for a Rover 600 earlier this year. It is now 4 months since I did this, and I can still see my old XF for sale on AT. Recently the seller (trader) reduced the price by about £800 so it's now just under £9k. But I wonder whether the £500/yr VED would put people off these cars @ this price level ?
  • Personlised Number Plate - Logistics? 17 Jun 2017 (Forum)
Do I contact my current insurer first and hope their isn't an admin fee this close to renewal date or go on the DVLA website and transfer it over and then renew the insurance? I use my car Mon - Fri but I do have a driveway to park offroad if needed and I still have the physical number plates that were removed from my old car. Any advice greatly appreciated.
  • VW Golf - 5dr Golf registered as 3dr with DVLA, HPi & VW 16 Dec 2016 (Forum)
I'm sure that there is nothing dodgy with the car - it was originally a VAG owned lease car and then one private owner from 2 years old but I'd imagine that when I come to trade the car in within a few years this could present a problem. Is there an easy way to change the V5, HPi report and VW database so that they show as a 5dr version.
  • VW - Extra miles on clock following a sale. 23 Mar 2016 (Forum)
I'm trying to get another take on something that happened after my daughter traded in a car at a VW garage. She had a drive in a demonstrater and agreed to buy. The car, as I said was a demonstrator and had approx 7800miles on the clock. The trade in was a 10year old Focus with approx 55k on the clock.
  • Returning a lease car 19 Jan 2016 (Forum)
The Juke goes back to the lease company next month. I have looked at the BVRLA website for specific advice about the condition in which a car should be returned, but it is password protected - so much for care for the consumer! The car is about to be three years old and has done just under 20,000 miles (out of 24,000 contracted).  Internally, it is fine needing only a good vacuum and wipe over.
  • Skoda Citigo 1.0 - 3 cylinder regression 27 Aug 2015 (Forum)
Ive had two fabias with the old 1.2htp 3 cylinder engines, which in comparison are quiet and silky smooth as they use a counterbalance shaft. The new 1.0L 3 cylinder engines very obviously dont. The rest of the car? Tat. Reminded a bit me of my first polo in 1976, talk about cheap feel and basic!!
  • Hyundai i20; Ford Fiesta - Hyundai i20 vs Ford Fiesta 22 Mar 2014 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I am looking to buy my first car to commute to my job (40 miles a day). My priorities are reliability and safety and at the moment I am mainly looking at Hyundai i20s and Ford Fiestas. My budget is £6500 and I prefer the car to be less than 5 years old.
  • Motability Renewal Options 11 Jan 2014 (Forum)
Im posting on behalf of my 74yr old father. His Motability car is up for renewal from next  month and Ive been trying to help him come up with a decent replacement for his Citroen C4. He never ventures onto the motorways at all and very rarely uses roads with speed limits in excess of 40mph.
  • Jaguar XJ8 3.2L year 2000 - Battery drain 19 Sep 2013 (Forum)
The battery on my year 2000 XJ8 3.2L runs down to 20% of capacity and c.11.9 volts if left standing for two weeks after a run or charge, and the car on occasion has not started due to a low battery. Disconnected from the car the 100 AH battery, Bosch 12 months old, holds its charge and tests OK. An auto electrician found a current drain of only 0.2amps  with the car locked, presumably for the alarm system.
