  • Missing number plate 15 Jul 2009 (Forum)
Just back from France and whilst waiting to board the ferry I noticed a German reg BMW with a missing front number plate. Went to speak to the driver and he was mortified, he had not noticed the loss and asked me if it was possible to get a replacement in England.
  • Car Hire Excess Insurance - any recommendations 26 Jun 2009 (Forum)
I will be making several trips to France and Italy over the coming few months and am considering buying an annual car hire excess insurance policy. Internet quotes start at around £30 with most companies around the £40 mark. Does anyone have any particular recommendations?
  • Speeding points 15 Jul 2007 (Forum)
Highly illegal and results in a very stiff sentences and fine if caught. Quite correctly to. If you do the crime take the pain. But Have you seen what happens in France and Spain. Thriving market in points being taken by other licence holders. Even adverts on Ebay. Now this is what I call a common market! Times Article 12/07/07 www.tinyurl.com/397wof
  • Boot Rack - Suggestions? 28 Apr 2007 (Forum)
Hi all, taking my missus away to France this June for 2 week hols. The Saab 9/3 convertible is roomy, however Missus T takes enough clothes and makeup for a whole year. I only take a toothbrush and my fold up bike. Suggestions please for a bootrack for the fold up?
  • Yorkshire to Dover Thursday evening/Frid 30 Oct 2006 (Forum)
Hi, I am going to france on Friday Morning. Need to be in dover at 7am, so I thought a nice overnight run should avoid all the usual congestion. Then someone said something about the A2 being closed overnight ? Is there something I need to worry about or can I assume that setting off round midnight will get me there with lots of time to waste.
  • best car for me 9 Feb 2006 (Forum)
What I need is some advice on what's the best car for me under £25000 new or second-hand, running costs not an issue. I live in rural North Norfolk and do about 12000 miles a year - occasional trips to South of France and Portugal, but mostly the longest journey is 65 mile round-trip to Norwich. General idea is to find something that will see me out!!
  • Continental Breakdown Cover 12 Oct 2005 (Forum)
Can anyone recommend a better deal with more realstic cover under this heading please please? I don't expect to go outside France/Switzerland/Italy.
  • Child allowed in front seat? 9 Aug 2005 (Forum)
    - Does anyone know if under-12 year olds can travel in the front passenger seat of the car, in Germany? (Even with a child seat fitted and seatbelt on?) I don't think it's allowed in France, and I'm not sure about the UK any more? I'm going on a long run up to Denmark next week and am thinking of driving overnight; my son will have more space up-front. Thanks!
  • Used Peugeot 407s - any feedback? 26 Jul 2005 (Forum)
As a potential replacement for my Volvo S60, they look really good value at under £11k for a 54 plate 2.0 petrol. And living in France as I do, servicing must surely be cheap and easy to arrange? What's the catch?! Anyone out there own one or drive one? Equivalent Mondeos seem to be a bit pricier, before anyone recommends the Mondeo TDCI...!
  • French diesel fuel 25 Feb 2005 (Forum)
I am convinced that our Megane gives us about 4 to 5 mpg more when running on french diesel. In the UK I generally use BP or Texaco and average 50mpg. In France I fill up with whatever is convenient at the time at we seem to average 55mpg. Driving conditions are similar, length of journeys perhaps a bit longer. A friend reckons it may be because the french may put more sulphur in their diesel, is this true?
  • RDS car radio clock 1 Mar 2002 (Forum)
Can any of you well-informed guys help me out? On a day trip to France the other day the RDS clock on my radion automatically set itself to european time; but it has notably failed to re-set itself on return to the UK. The BBC web site SAYS that they broadcast a time signal on RDS, so why aren't I picking it up?
  • Highmileage better than low? 17 Apr 2001 (Forum)
Most of my miles were done on the motorway in the first 2-3 years of its life. All my father's miles were done locally except for holidays in France towing a caravan. Is it necessarily a good swap. Both cars are on the original clutch.
  • 2006 Peugeot 307 SW 2.0 HDI 136 RHR 6 speed box - Clutch pedal springy at bottom of travel 19 Apr 2025 (Forum)
I don't want to change the clutch only to find the issue isn't resolved. The clutch works fine but I'm about to do a 1500 miles trip in France visiting the my wife's family and don't want to get stranded without all the tools to change the clutch (breakdown cover only covers a repatriation up to the market value so the car would end being sc***ped in France).

  • Are winter tyres mandatory in France? 27 Sep 2021 (Ask HJ)
I understand a new French Law requires Winter Tyres after 1 November 2021. Does this requirement include all-season tyres?
  • Why am I paying for other people's pollution? 5 Apr 2021 (Forum)
Shipping and Aviation seem to escape the regulations on climate change.  How can it be eco-friendly to ship goods 5000 miles from France to China for processing into flooring and then returned to the UK with another 5,000 miles.  This is wrong on so many levels. Wood is a heavy material. Why can't it be processed in Britain?.
