  • Efficient driving technique 29 Sep 2006 (Forum)
My question is will the computer/ecu cut off the petrol when the accelerator is not depressed, or is my car too old to have such a system? In my case, would it be better to leave it in gear and ease off the accelerator, or to continue leaving it in neutral? Thanks for your help. Ish

  • Jaguar mystery 31 May 2006 (Forum)
The independent engineer who does my car was scratching his head over a not very old, 4-litre I think, Jaguar XJ6 the other day. He said it 'wasn't running right' and would also run with three of the plug leads disconnected. He demonstrated.
  • Mot Failure - Cat & Lamda - Kia Pride 4 Feb 2006 (Forum)
Wife's car today failed MOT test on lambda sensor and catalytic convertor. It's a W reg Kia Pride with 38k miles. When we bought the car it was just 3 years old and had already had a new lambda sensor fitted to pass its first MOT (2003).
  • Astra 1.4 8v having troubles starting fr 15 Jan 2006 (Forum)
Following on from my thread last week regarding my 1994 Astra 1.4 8v MPI C14SE, the car is having problems starting from cold. The car seems to continually keep flooding from cold, its only when the car is bump started that it will go (then works fine and turns back on straight away when warm).
  • Jewels in India 5 Sep 2005 (Forum)
I have been out in India for a month and a half doing my medical elective, and seeing the usual range of japanese and korean and indian cars, mixed with old Fiat 1100D's (Padmini Premier) and Ambassador's (Morris Oxford MO), with the odd Morris Minor and Standard Herald (CKD of Trimph heralds). Knowing my keen interest in cars my uncle took me to see his friend who has "a few antique cars".
  • Biodiesel 28 Jun 2005 (Forum)
I've been looking into this but can't get a good answer, so can someone tell me: Is it legal to use biodiesel in a car? (Once all duty is paid) Is it cheaper to use biodiesel in a car? (Once all duty is paid) Is it 'safe' to use biodiesel in a car? (Most likely Pug 306 HDI) Is it possible to buy biodiesel as a member of 'Joe Public'?
  • Smelly screen wash water 6 May 2005 (Forum)
Rover 600, 6 years old. I was driving it at the weekend on a motorway with the aircon off & fan off, when I used the screen wash, a few seconds afterwards, a horrible smell of stagnant water came into the car. I put this down to the screen wash bottle.
  • question of values/peace of mind 27 Mar 2005 (Forum)
Why pay £2k for an old car when you can buy a new one (with warranty) for a little over £4,000? There's an interesting juxtaposition of two readers' letters in HJ's Expert Advice pages of today's Dly Teleg. Man wants to spend £2000 on first car for daughter, and reliability is main consideration.
  • Nissan Primera 2.0 SVE auto 19 Nov 2004 (Forum)
My car is under 3 years old but out of warranty due to 87,000 miles. Last week I learnt the head gasket has gone (after a M25 breakdown!) but because this will be its 3rd replacement (last one 20,000 miles ago)Nissan say they will only guarantee the work if I have a new cylinder head as well!
  • Mondeo 2.0 TDCI 130 auto estate 12 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I've seen a 2002 52 Mondeo TDCi 130 auto Ghia X estate, with 14k miles, and was wondering if this would make a good purchase bearing in mind that this would be one of the first TDCi's and the long history of problems with this engine. Also, how well does it work with the auto box, and are there any problems there? The car is up at £12995, and I would be looking to keep the car for a considerable length of time. This car has 17" alloys, so I am a bit concerned with the speed of tyre wear - how long typically are we looking at?
  • 1995 Vauxhall Omega 3.0L V6 Auto 4 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Hi, my mate has the Elite version of the above car for sale @ £1800. With 70k on the clock and full service history I feel this is alot of car for the money, and am thinking of buying it. Does anyone know if this engine tends to encounter problems around the 70k mark.

  • Final Car 18 Nov 2003 (Forum)
Am downsizing from a 2-0ltr Vectra to a 1-6ltr Astra (yes I know the general opinions on Vauxhall but I have a first class local agent and a good rapport with their staff.)I have chosen the Club model it has no ABS to go wrong green tinted glass(it stands on drive so I dont want the trim fading)I have chosen the no cost option of an alectric sun roof in place of the standard Air/Con,and finally it has the same radio as in the Vectra ie takes tapes of which I have plenty instead of CDs. I am the octogenarian from how old are you and feel I will be leaving my wife a car with less expensive things to go wrong but adequate for the purpose. What does the forum think? ndbw

  • Starting probs 25 Dec 2002 (Forum)
Anyway - I got the battery checked out (car is about 5.5 yrs old) and it was a bit ropey so I got a new one and I'll see if that fixes the problem - question is do the starting probs sound battery related - why would flooring the accelerator help?
  • Damp Starts 11 Nov 2002 (Forum)
But after 10 minutes or so the car runs perfectly again and is very responsive. Are there any checks or replacements I can perform to alleviate the problem? I recently replaced the spark plugs, but the HT leads are 5 years old now - could they be replaced?
  • Upgrading car alarms 17 Oct 2002 (Forum)
I've recently bought a Golf gti mk2 & am thinking of changing the alarm\immobiliser for a few reasons (old kit, only have 1 key fob for each). So, can anyone recommend any of the current alarm\immobiliser's? Also, i guess i will have to get a thatcham category alarm for insurance purposes. Does this have to be fitted by a "qualified" fitter?
  • Seats for a MK2 punto 3 Sep 2002 (Forum)
I recently bought a new punto it's one of the more basic spec models and as it is a lower spec the seats offer very little support. I am interested in buying some seats from a sporting or the HGT version of the car. So, does anyone know where i'd be able to find these seats. ie, specialised fiat breakers etc. I assume that crash damaged cars end up somewhere for dismantling.... All the scrap yards I have found so far deal with cars which are around 6 years old.
  • Inflation and car prices 31 Dec 2001 (Forum)
This relates back to a post a few days ago by Alvin about the Moris Minor he bought for £410 in 1961 and a VW Beetle for £624 in 1964. - also the article in the Telegraph today on the Fiesta being 25 years old. Looking at the rise in Retail Price Index since 1961(a factor of 13.625) and 1964(12.37) the Minor would cost £5586 and VW £7718 at todays prices. Given the much higher spec of today's cars they must be better value now.
