Torque and BHP 23 Aug 2004 (Forum)
For example, why do diesel engines generally have higher torques, than their equivalent bhp petrol cousins, and how does this translate in the actual drive from each engine? -
Cavalier engine cleaning 10 Aug 2004 (Forum)
The lower half of the engine is filthy. I was going to use Gunk or similar, but I've got a tarmac drive so much water will be needed. Has anybody got a better method? -
T-Cut????? 8 Aug 2004 (Forum)
Morning all, I was walking the dog last night and happened upon two young lads waxing their car in the drive. The car in question was a tatty old Escort...H reg I think in red. As I got nearer it became apparant that they were using T-Cut over the entire car. I was under the impression that this takes a layer of paint off and should only be used on scratches. -
Five-to-One 8 Jul 2004 (Forum)
While driving home today, I passed several cars driven by people holding the steering wheel at the five-to-one position, or even with their hands together at the top of the wheel. This leaves the lower arm positioned directly in front of the airbag. -
Escort Binding Brakes 26 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I have a problem which is driving me mad - if anyone can help save what is left of my sanity, it\'d be greatly greatly appreciated. The brakes on my escort are binding and the passenger side brake disc keeps warping (had 4 new pairs of brake discs in the last 12 months). -

Buying a car from Europe and shipping it 11 Jun 2004 (Forum)
Hi everyone, I live in the US where any car of any worth drinks petrol like there's no tomorrow. I want to research buying a car from Europe, i.e. left hand drive, maybe Luxembourg, France or Germany, and shipping it to the USA. Does anyone know anything about this? I'm looking at a Diesel vehicle, primarily, probably a Mondeo. Thanks! Phil -
Fiesta. running probs 30 May 2004 (Forum)
My daughter has a Fiesta 1400cc 1992. which has the same problems as a previous author here, Starts, but misfires, and stalls, untill it has warmed up, even then sounds lumpy when idleing, ok when driving. When parked and idleing, there is a strong smell of gassy fumes from under the bonnet. Plugs and leads seem ok, could it be a pipe blocked from engine to air filter? Johnny. -
How to run in a sports car ? 16 May 2004 (Forum)
Just bought a new Ignis Sport (very nippy 1.5) a month ago I currently drive it pretty much as I would if it were a non-new car, that is frequently rev the engine to 4,000 rpm (but not really above that). The Suzuki dealer told me new cars did not particularly need running-in periods. -
V8s, boxers, V6s why sound nice? 1 Mar 2004 (Forum)
While out for a walk this morning I couldn't help noticing a scooby drive past and thought it sounded quite nice. This got me wondering why V8's and to a lesser extent V6's soounds so appealing. There must be a scientific explanation somewhere why an offbeat V8 burble sounds pleasing. -
Impressions of new Golf 23 Feb 2004 (Forum)
The interior though, to me' looked like it had been downgraded to a Polo. No nice soft plastics. Apparently the drive is a big improvement though as well as rear legroom etc. -
Xantia heavy clutch on start 6 Feb 2004 (Forum)
Hi, My Sister in law has a P Reg 2.0 Petrol Xantia. In the first 10 minutes or so of driving she experiences a very heavy clutch. This then returns to normal. Garages are saying this requires a new clutch at several hundred quid...it sounds more to do with the actuation so I wondered if anyone had experience of this and could give us a clue if do need the clutch change. -
Pug 306 - Clicking Noise 4 Feb 2004 (Forum)
I cant hear it when the accelerator is being pressed but it is loud when gilding either in or out of gear. The garage have no idea what could be causing it and advised to continue to drive it until it breaks down! Nice eh! Does anyone have any ideas? -
Drop Links - Citroen C5 27 Jan 2004 (Forum)
Do worn drop links make noises when riding over the down bit of a speed hump? Citroen C5 16k miles. Could a noise be different if only one wheel was on the hump? When I drive over a speed hump with both wheels, I get a knocking noise at faster speed hump speeds, if I can make one wheel miss the hump, it is silent. Thanks -

Rover 214 Petrol Tank Filler Cap 12 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I stupidly left my internal (the one behind the flap) petrol filler tank cap from my MK 2 Rover 214Sli behind at Tesco today (no joy in getting it back sadly). Is it safe to drive the car without it and, more importantly, how do I go about getting another? Any advice would be gratefully received! -
Brakes & MOT 6 Jan 2004 (Forum)
I know mine are on the way to needing replacement but can't quite afford it at the moment, but the MOT is due on 16th Jan. Don't get me wrong, they do WORK... just that everyone else who drives my car says "god...your brakes!!". -
Citroen ZX 1.9D occasionally cuts out 31 Dec 2003 (Forum)
In the 18 months I've had my ZX it has cut out on me 5 times now when driving. It starts up again fine, and it usually happens when I press the clutch when coming down to second at a junction. The last time it happened, I had driven about 2 miles. Anyone have any clues on the cause? -
