  • Astra Diesel. 3 Feb 2005 (Forum)
Looking for a AStra Diesel, after reading the CBC, I'm looking for the views of people who have owned them, which is the best to go for in terms of speed and economy? I dont want anything that runs our of steam half way up an incline, so I'm looking at something around 99 bhp. There seems to have been a number of engines, also must be reliable. I do about 1000 miles a week. Thanks in advance.
  • The crazy question thread! 21 Jan 2005 (Forum)
Stuff you always wanted to know but were to afraid to ask! If i left my car idling on a full tank, how long before it runs out? If i ran my engine at maximum rev's, how long before it went bang? if i went flat out in first gear, how long before gearbox goes to pieces? More crazy questions and answers wanted from the very knowledgeable backroom!

  • Saxo coolant loss 14 Dec 2004 (Forum)
I cannot see any evidence of where it might be dripping from underneath the car, but at the back of the radiator the top corner has grown a bit of a blue fur coat. Am I right in thinking this is anti-freeze and this is where the problem is? The car runs ok with no wheezing or whistling and there is no evidence of water contamination in the oil. Thanks in advance for any ideas.
  • New Astra Reliability? 18 Nov 2004 (Forum)
I ask because today I saw about the 4th one in 3 weeks with its bonnet up on the hard shoulder of the motorway ironically I have seen them all on the M53 which runs through Elsemere Port straight past the Vauxhall factory in which they are produced! Glad I bought a Honda! Thanks
  • Parallel Routes for relaxed driving 8 Nov 2004 (Forum)
Partly inspired by the mention of a new TV program involving old routes between places, I was wondering if people know (and would be prepared to share!) of more relaxing routes which run near to more hectic routes. As a starter; When I have time, I prefer to use the B4100 instead of the M42 north of Oxford. IIRC, it used to be the A41, and is mostly deserted. Perfect, stress-free progress!
  • intermittent fault on Rover 111 4 Nov 2004 (Forum)

  • Good News & Bad News 31 Oct 2004 (Forum)
Good news. Honda are to bring out a version of the Civic which runs on natural gas from the mains, very clean burning etc. The sale includes a compressor to raise the pressure from the gas main to that required for the car to use, and to store enough. Plug it into the cooker point when you get home, DON'T forget to unplug next morning!
  • Ford focus heater 12 Oct 2004 (Forum)
A friend of mine owns a W-reg focus that gives her little trouble. However, this morning she recons that despite running the engine for approx 20mins, the heater only blew out cold air. I asked if there wwas any signs of water leakage, suspecting that there was a hole in the heater matrix, but there isnt any sign of a leak.
  • Car Clubs 22 Sep 2004 (Forum)
If it is a concept you are not aware of www.whizzgo.co.uk gives more info on the scheme currently running in Leeds (no comments about the fact you have to drive a Citroen C3 please!!). Would you ditch your car and join such a club, or is owing a vehicle preferable?
  • Curing streaking 28 Aug 2004 (Forum)
There appears to be a design flaw in the Yaris where rainwater runs down a few places on the body rather than draining off evenly. As mine is white, this leaves very noticable streaks and I was wondering if anyone can suggest a way to stop this happening. Even after waxing the car it still happens and while it does wipe off, it is a pain to have to do every few days during this lovely summer we are having at the moment...
  • VW VR6 Blue Smoke then shredded belt 26 Aug 2004 (Forum)
I was coming up a hill after a long run and noticed some blue smoke, after coming over the brow heard a horrible noise and the car stalls. Pulled over and had a look and the grooved altenator belt was in 1000 shreds. The car is being towed to a garage to be inspected tommorrow.
  • Hot Key Pug 12 Jul 2004 (Forum)
I recently rented a Pug 206 1.1 with aircon in the Algarve. I noticed that after 20 minutes of running or so if you turn the ignition off and remove the key the metal part is unexpectedly hot. Is there a design problem there somewhere and too much current id being handled by the ignition switch. Other than that if was a great wee motor and at £193 for a fortnight a good deal as well.
  • Nissan Micra timing retards 25 Jun 2004 (Forum)
It has been checked at a Nissan dealer, and two independent garages. The last one discovered that the ecu puts out spike waveforms when it is running normally. It then squares off the spikes for four waves and the timing retards. Everything checks out. Anybody got any ideas? Thanks, Bob
  • Piaggio Ape van? Stop laughing! 9 Jun 2004 (Forum)
I'm considering buying a Piaggio Ape van as a delivery van for a small florist's shop (the shop's small, not the florist...). Check out: http://www.reliantpartsworld.com/version_1.3_ape/van.htm Cheap to run, easy round town, good advertising tool etc. are the appealing bits. Don't need a proper van cause flowers ain't heavy! Very cheap secondhand. What do you think?

  • tyre rage 22 Apr 2004 (Forum)
It's a real row, especially I guess from low profile tyres. My question is: can modern tyres be designed to run quieter, or is it the fault of the materials used, as opposed to the tread pattern design?
  • Girl Triplets 11 Apr 2004 (Forum)
We need to aquire a people carrier (for obvious reasons) with enough room to carry 5 plus everything else to keep a small tribe running. The budget is £6,000, we've looked at Zafira's & the like but they cannot fit 3 baby seats, any advice would be most appreciated. Thankyou in advance.
  • Mk1 Golf GTi convertible? 11 Mar 2004 (Forum)
They seem pretty cheap at the moment and I reckon they'll become collectable. Any major problem areas to look out for? Anybody out there running one or similar hard top GTi? Also, what engine is in the "Clipper" version, 1800 injection or carb? I can't remember.Grateful for any feedback Ta Baz
