  • Vauxhall Omega 2.0 16V - Head Gasket or Cracked Head? 24 Apr 2010 (Forum)
Last week it became much worse and it was suggested to me it was not worth bothering as with no obvious leak there was an internal proble. Investigation showed water getting into No. 2 (from front). It is missing and if you run it with the plug out you get clouds of steam. I have beeen told that if it is the head it is not really viable (12 y.o. - value maybe £500) but may be worth looking at if it is the head gasket.

  • Nissan Note (2006 - ) - 09 1.5 Flywheel question and a negative note. 25 Mar 2010 (Forum)
OK, so I'm still trying to decide what sort of low running cost car to move to, and the Nissan Note is still on my list, just, after the lack of response to my question about spare wheels led to a further visit to the dealer to measure. He and I decided that a proper spare won't fit.
  • Ford Mondeo 2.0TDCi Diesel Estate (2007) - Dual Mass Flywheel strife '07 Ford Mondeo Estates? 20 Mar 2010 (Forum)
I'm considering buying a second hand Ford Mondeo Estate 2.0TDCi from 2007 with around 80,000 miles on the clock.   Reading up about it it seems some people have been running into dualmass flywheel and clutch failures around the 80-100K mark, with a hefty £1000+ bill. Can anyone tell me if this is a common failure for the later 2000-07 Mondeo Estates or was it more on the earlier cars in the 2000-07 range?

  • Renault Megane (1996 - 1998) - 97 1.6 starting problems 9 Feb 2010 (Forum)
i'm having intermittent starting problems. it will start first time in the mornings. but after a good run i get problems that resemble starter motor issues. all the dashboard lights come on but nothing from the starter, not even the usual click!!! after a little while, maybe 30 mins it will start perfectly. i've had the battery checked and it is fine, both standing and under load. i've read on another forum that it could be the main connection from the battery to the starter motor. i've spoken to a couple of garages about changing the connection but they dont want to touch it unless they change the starter motor!!
  • Vauxhall Astra G Diesel (1998 - 2004) - 01 1.7 Knocking noise from engine 31 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Hi my asta van has a general knocking noise coming from the top end of the engine, i have checked the valve timing and checked camshafts for wear and checked tappets for correct gap and all is fine, the van drives fine with no loss of power, i have tried to read fault memory but unable to read memory with diag machine, i have heard a few rumours about the 2 ecu's in the engine bay causing certain engine running and knocking noises, ie fuel knock/pinking, can anyone advise me what these ecu' issues are or are there any known problems like this that anyone can advise me on, any help would be great.
  • Peugeot 306 (1993 - 2001) - 96 1.9td Oil Leak Smokey Smell 26 Jan 2010 (Forum)
I noticed that there was quite a bit of fresh oil around the Oil filter. I then checked the oil and it was running quite low. So I then decided to fill it up. Randomly, I decided to smell the oil filler cap, and it smells of burnt oil. From looking at a few cars before this one they all smelled oily, but this is the first engine I've smelt thats burnt.
  • Vauxhall Vectra B facelift (1999 - 2002) - 99 1.8 Temperature gauge faulty 25 Jan 2010 (Forum)
This seemed to have started a few weeks ago when we had that really cold spell. Dont know if it was that or just a coincidence. The car is running normal. I've not long came back from a 150 mile round trip with no problems. This is just one of those things thats annoying and would like to fix if its easy enough. Anyone got any idea what the problem may be?
  • Peugeot 307 SW (2002 - 2008) - 05 2.0 Anti Pollution Fault - HELP! 23 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Hi there I too have the infamous 'Anti Pollution Fault' display, along with the engine management light. The car is a 2.0 HDi 136, with 80k on the clock and continues to runs like new. My mechanically-minded friend plugged his vehicle diagnostics thingy into the dash and got the following fault reading; 'Turbo Boost Ctrl Pos. Sen. Ckt R/Perf.' He is going to try and have a tinker with it in a few days, but I have a feeling a lot of guess work will be involved..
  • Volkswagen Golf III (1992 - 1997) - 97 2.8 Flushing / cleaning coolant system 14 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Since I bought my car about 6 years ago, the coolant has been a sort of brown colour, instead of pink. I've changed coolant lots of times, flushed it a number of times with water / flush until it all runs clear, but the brown colour always comes back. A brown substance coats the inside of the header tank too, which can be removed with a bottle brush, and I think all the pipes are also coated on the inside.
  • Honda CR-Z (2010 - ) - officially announced 13 Jan 2010 (Forum)
www.parkers.co.uk/News/New-Cars/First-look-Honda-CR-Z/ {link to rival website made non clickable} The new CR-Z has been finally unveiled at the Detroit motor show, due 'Summer 2010'. Interesting that its an IMA car, not a 'full' hybrid, so unable to run on leccy alone. In many ways, not dissimilar to the original mk1 Insight, with a manual gearbox. Power seems puny and no official performance figures from Honda yet. That said, if it can hold the road like an old Ford Puma did (lovely handling car) then it will win some friends.
  • DPFs - how to tell if they are working? 3 Jan 2010 (Forum)
Does the burn cycle manifest itself in any noticeable way ? Also, what are the symptoms of a faulty DPF ? Poor running or mpg or what ? Just curious as I say, nothing appears to be untoward with mine, just wanted to get the expert advice of the BR in the hope that I never need it....if you see what I mean....
  • Ford Focus III (2008 - ) - 08 1.8 spare key does not work 26 Dec 2009 (Forum)
On the 53 reg Mondeo (diesel), I could use the non-remote key by holding it in position II for a few seconds when the alarm would stop and the car would run, but this does not seem to work. I'm sure there is a simple way of enabling this key. Does anyone know what it is ? Any help is appreciated. Michael
  • Ford Fiesta (1995 - 1999) - 96 1.3 Brake pedal nearly to floor. 17 Dec 2009 (Forum)
He jumped in it this morning to go to work and the brake pedal went to the floor, we had a look at it and there is no brakes until the pedal nearly reaches the floor. I went a (gentle!) run in it and the brakes do work but the pedal goes nearly to the floor with little or no feeling of them working. The brakes are good enough to squeal the tyres when they come on but they only work in the last 1/2in before the pedal touches the floor.
  • Lexus IS250/220D (2005 - ) - Replacing a Lexus 18 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Tiring of his high pressure job and working 80+ hour weeks, he is taking a salary cut and now needs to buy& run a car privately. His budget is £5k, and he estimates his annual mileage to be no more than 12k. The car has to be more practical than the IS250, so a hatch or estate is required...albeit with decent performance and similar build quality.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 2.0 engine misfire 8 Nov 2009 (Forum)
Under acceleration the car seems fine but cruising at stated revs the misfire (ockering) develops if I push the revs upto around 2400 the hesitation goes away but as soon as you ease off it returns..the car also seems to be guzzling juice.. Running at slower speeds the problem doesnt seem to appear.. most of my driving is motorway driving so the problem is one i can done without.. thought train is heading towards injectors although someone has mentioned the turbo. so any help greatly appreciated..
  • Position of traffic signal cameras 1 Nov 2009 (Forum)
And if it was a speed camera as well would that be the same? I'm wondering whether this camera flashed because it caught someone going the other way running a light...
  • Peugeot 407 SW (2004 - ) - 04 2.0 HDi Overheated 28 Oct 2009 (Forum)
Hi The coolant bypass hose on my 54 reg 2.0 HDI burst and caused the engine to overheat and go into limp mode. I managed to replace the hose but when i have refilled the coolant and run the engine I cant get rid of the air bubbles, plus if i top up when cold it justs blows out the expansion bottle as soon as I start the engine. Also now appear to have a problem with the turbo system as below 1500 rpm its fine but above the engine surges and there is like the noise of air escaping.
  • Ford Mondeo III (2000 - 2007) - 02 2.0 fuel injector no good, should i buy 1 or 4? 27 Oct 2009 (Forum)
my 02 mondeo tdci 130 (75k) has fault code p2337, the glow plug light flashes, its running on 3 cylinders it seems, noisy on idle and underpowered, though generally it drives well. A diesel speciaist found the above code, and did a leakage test, which came back ok (even). Injectors 2 and 4 have the code scrubbed off, and cyl 2 has the fault code.
