96 1.9td Oil Leak + Smokey Smell - wolfetone
Hey everyone,

On sunday I decided to check to see if all the water was ok in the car. I noticed that there was quite a bit of fresh oil around the Oil filter. I then checked the oil and it was running quite low. So I then decided to fill it up. Randomly, I decided to smell the oil filler cap, and it smells of burnt oil. From looking at a few cars before this one they all smelled oily, but this is the first engine I've smelt thats burnt.

This is my first car, so I'm still leanring so I'm sorry if I'm blowing this out of proportion. But I rely on my car so I'd like any help with diagnosing what the smokey smell and oil leak means.

Cheers,
Michael

Could just be old oil, when was it last changed? Have you changed it since you had it? If its leaking from the filter it may just need screwing up tighter.

I'm not sure when it was last changed. I've done well over the 6,000 miles between services anyway myself, so I will get it serviced. But I was wondering if it could be a terminal problem as the engine has never had any oil on it. I will check it out though.

Also I forgot to mention, it idles quite high (just a touch over 1,000rpm). Would this be related to the oil problems?

If it smells burnt it probably has not been changed in a long while, providing the engine is functioning OK with no excessive smoke or rattles, it should be alright but, regular oil changes are essential to long engine life, the XUD engine should be good for 2-300,000 miles with regular changes. I change mine every 5,000, its easier to remember apart from the wear benifit. You dont need to get expensive oil, anything rated at API, CD or better is fine, you should be able to get that at around £10.00 per five litres from a discount store or supermarket, oil filters are available from GFS for about £3-4. Its the frequency of oil changes rather then the price of the oil that makes for longevity. Change it as soon as possible.
