  • Government announces £500m “electric highways” trials 18 Aug 2015 (News)
    The Government has commissioned a £500m study into technology that could allow electric vehicle owners to charge their vehicle as they drive. The study is being conducted with BMW and Renault and could result in wireless charging panels being embedded beneath the surface of public motorways, which will then charge electric vehicles as they drive over the surface of the road.   The announcement is the results of a two-year Government feasibility study to look at various ways of reducing the range anxiety that prevents many from buying pure EVs. The study focused on the possibility of installing a Dynamic Wireless Power Transfer (DWPT) system beneath the UK’s major motorways.

    According to Department for Transport statistics, 20% of 17-24 year olds will have an accident in their first six months behind the wheel, but the survey - conducted by the company behind SEAT Young Driver – shows that those who participated in the SEAT Young Driver course had a much lower accident rate of 9% in their first six months of driving. Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM) chief examiner Peter Rodger said: "It's good to see early indications that pre-driver courses are producing safer drivers.  The IAM has always felt that training drivers over a longer period of time and catching them when their attitudes towards driving are still developing is key to producing a safer driver.

    Ten vehicles from the early days of motoring will be offered at Bonhams’ London to Brighton Run Sale on 3 November at its New Bond Street salesroom. The highlight of the European collection is the rare 1898 Germain 6hp Twin-Cylinder Open Drive Limousine (£150,000-220,000), which is thought to be the prototype car for the Belgian company. The circa 1902 Ader Twin-Cylinder V-Twin Four-Seater (£85,000-100,000) is an early example from the French marque founded by Clément Ader, the man responsible for establishing Paris’s phone network in 1880.
